Cassettes: Do people still buy them?

Heck, do they still make them?! I can't remember the last time I saw a brand new cassette tape at a music store. I haven't bought one in 10 yrs! Maybe longer. I dunno maybe I just don't notice them anymore. Last time I noticed the price difference between tapes and cd's wasn't very much. But they still put cassette players in cars so I guess people still must be buying them.

Suave 01-27-2005 10:32 PM

I don't buy them, and I can't fathom why people would, unless for some strange reason there are some artists out ONLY on tape.

omega2K4 01-28-2005 11:57 AM

I didn't know they still made them.

01-28-2005 12:00 PM

I dont know if they still make them or not... i've not seen any NEW music on tapes for quite a while. I dont buy them regularly, but the last time i went on a roadtrip in a car with only a tape deck, we picked up quite a few gems out of the quarter bin at a thrift store.

radioguy 01-28-2005 02:21 PM

i bought one off of ebay, The Judy's -- Moo, because it's not on cd. that would be the only reason i would buy a cassette.

vanblah 01-28-2005 02:21 PM

People still make their own mix tapes. Not everyone has a CD burner ... although I can't imagine why not really.

Suave 01-28-2005 05:54 PM

Yeah. It's what, 60 bucks for a quality CD burner now? Although, not everyone has a computer either.

Not even $60, probably closer to $25-$40. Hell, you can get a good DVD burner that also burns CDs for close to $70-$100.

IC3 01-28-2005 07:39 PM

You can still get them at Independant record shops, Like live DJ Mix tapes or studio sessions & stuff like that..But as far as HMV and music shops like that..I havent seen them in a long time.

Forgive me; I should have specified that I was speaking in Canadian dollars. ;) We also tend to get a considerably higher markup on electronics than Americans (NAFTA my ass).

skinnymofo 01-28-2005 08:30 PM

i still occasionally buy tapes when they have the 2 for 1.00 deals because .50 is much cheaper than a CD and faster than downloading.
last tape i think i bought was George Clintons Bubblegum pop

jakewesier 01-29-2005 04:31 AM

tapes are usefull for the home musician. You can still buy them, if you have 4 track recorder or something like that they normally record onto a casset tape. Plus yes, not everyone has a CD burnder and casset takes are cheap as hell and are always re-writable.

Still i don't buy them anymore LOL

ironmaiden7o7 01-29-2005 05:23 AM

My boyfriend's parent's mini van doesn't have a cd player, so he goes around and records over old cassettes and plays them while we're driving, couldn't get any better.

ShaniFaye 01-29-2005 05:59 AM

Dave's car has a cd and cassette player...one of the last trips we took we brought along my tape box...I hadnt heard them in years and realized just how much I missed some of the heavy metal compilation tapes I'd bought, things like Power Chords Vol (insert number) it was really cool, I doubt I'll ever find those on CD, so if I were to run into them in a bargin bin somewhere I'd definately buy them to replace the worn out ones I have now

Thermopyle 01-29-2005 06:25 AM

Ehh...CD:s, do people still buy them?

Scorps 01-29-2005 02:43 PM

Tapes.....
Havn't seen one in years, I think everything is on CD's and DVD's now, the disc has taken over;)

eltardo 01-30-2005 03:52 AM

I bought a cassette a few months ago. The CD player in my car broke and I needed something to listen to until I replaced it. I bought Big L - Lifestyles of the poor and dangerous for 3 bucks at the mall. Not a bad find really.

jonjon42 01-30-2005 07:29 AM

I still buy vinyl sometimes but not cassettes cassettes are yucky... :p

izzzzy 01-30-2005 07:40 AM

i buy them at yard sales for next to nothing got some great music that way

Zephyr66 01-30-2005 02:37 PM

No way! Tapes suck!

Bodyhammer86 01-30-2005 08:52 PM

I don't see the point in buying tapes when I can buy or burn cds.

Val_1 02-01-2005 05:42 PM

I occasionally break out the old CDs and flash back to middle school.

zenkat911 02-01-2005 06:29 PM

surely nobody is still building their tape collection. how long till cds are obsolete?

Fly 02-02-2005 06:38 AM

i buy the blank cassettes still so we can record off of our four and eight track machines.......

then we dump 'em in the comp and burn them to disc......

all is good in cassette land still.

roachboy 02-02-2005 07:53 AM

i like cassettes.
i like to do thing with and to them.
in general, i like the sound of tape better than digital.

I don't think CD's will go away......Mini disc might take over but I don't think so!

cockmonger 02-03-2005 07:29 PM

MP3 will take over before minidiscs...talk about a good idea that came about 3 years too late. Anyway i would like to use this space to do my impersonation of a cassette tape....HSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs.

I use a cheaper and higher quality solution: a 4-channel mixer plugged straight into my computer. Works great.

Cassettes have to be the worst medium ever. They got caught in the player more than 8 tracks, sounded crappier and degraded quicker than vinyls, and although CD's don't sound as warm as vinyls, they still beat the hell out of cassettes.

sadistikdreams 02-06-2005 01:30 PM

Well, in my personal Hierarchy of sound quality:
Reel-to-Reel/Casette(which is the best, and what master TAPES are made from)
Vinyl(if you have a goooood ass phonograph)
CD/MP3
Radio

So yeah, since I don't have a reel-to-reel, I think tape is best. But do I buy them? Nope.

Blasphemy. 02-06-2005 02:15 PM

Considering my van is too crappy to have a cd player, I frequently make new mix tapes to listen to in my van. If You could still buy tapes, i'd definately probably buy them, but i'm sure they're long gone.

anleja 02-06-2005 07:52 PM

I remember the days of making a mix tape. It was a much longer process, to get the songs timed so they all fit with not too much extra space, etc. However, I like the intimacy involved with mix tapes, as opposed to a mix cd. Giving a girl a mix cd is not as effective as giving her a mix tape, becasue anyone can throw together a mix cd in 20 seconds. A tape takes care.

I remember getting a 90 min tape to record a best of what ever band I wanted. I had to do the math to see if I could get all my favorite songs on it and then split those songs into 45 mn per side!

Good times

Funny how after this thread I found my best of Dramarama cassette!!

shakran 02-07-2005 06:31 AM

if your car doesn't have a CD player, you can also go this route:

Hell yeah. I remember (we sound like old people, btw, back in my day...) getting 100 min+ tapes, the songs would never end.
