Coverdale/Page
How many of you ever picked this album up? I was at CD Exchange in San Antonio yesterday and saw it there for $5.99 so I said "Eh what the hell? I'll give it a listen." and picked it up to see if it was any good. One of only a few albums I ever purchased blindly. Ya know the critics tore this album apart if I remember correctly and it's actually not bad! It's pretty good for a first effort. I'll admit it has a few songs that just really drag on for a while haha like "Don't Leave Me This Way" (7:52) but thats actually a pretty good song. It has a few throw away tracks but some that are really good. Coverdale has some really good vocals scattered around and Page..well you can't go wrong with Page. Robert was an idiot not to want to go back in the studio with him back in the 90's. Jimmy threw down some really great guitar work on this album. Now I said "pretty" good for most of this album because thats what it is...Robert Plant went on interview about it a little bitter and said "Yeah it's like Led Zepplin but it's like BAD Led Zepplin ya know?" which is kinda true but still good now the only song on there that isn't "pretty" good is "Take Me For A While" I have to admit that song is actually really fuckin awesome...I love it. The studio work on it is fantastic..the string arrangements...keyboards, Jimmy's solo is awesome. Well no secret Jimmy is a studio genius. Well those of you that did pick it up? What did you think of it? And if you haven't heard it in a long time, listen to it again and get back to me on that. Asta!!

Ya know I'd like to hear another album with these two...this one was a first one time effort so it wasn't flawless...wonder what they would produce if they ever went back in the studio again with their new found knowledge of each other. Sadly that didn't happen back then because well....Jimmy was only trying to make Robert jealous which worked and he finally went back in the studio with him...I think first they did MTV unplugged and then went to record some things that eventually became "New Quarter" if I'm not mistaken...never got to check that album out...perhaps I should. Jimmy ran back to Robert when he finally agreed to record with him and who could blame him? Just wonder if they could done any better if they got a second chance at it.

I am a huge Page fan and picked this up the day it was released. Yeah, it wasn't bad. It wasn't really that good either. Not that I could find anything wrong with any of the songs. The do all rock .... and hard. But, about halfway through you kind of hit the skip button to check out the next track. A guy I worked with at the time said he did the same thing (next, please). But, pretty good for a first effort. I think I sold my copy a couple of years ago, so I can't really put it on to check it out again. But, it was a hell of a lot better than the album the Page/Plant released (Walking Into Clarkesdale). That was a real piece of crap.

^ Yeah thats what I heard about the album Page/Plant did too. I felt the same way about the disc towards the end of it around track 7 or so...the songs started to drag on...started out good but then they just...kept going haha. I've been trying to give it more listens to see if some of them grow on me or I get used to them...the first few songs are like I said pretty good..nice and rocky...probably all the way up until track 5...only thing I noticed about the album was that it wasn't great...it was just pretty good..but it showed the potential for something great if the two decided to give it another shot.

Being a huge Zep fan I was dismayed when I heard Page was working with Coverdale (or as Plant put it,..Coverversion) I listened to the album and had mixed feelings, but overall remember it as pretty good.
Funny too, I saw Page and Plant in Toronto's Skydome in '96 and they did Shake My Tree. Page pulled it off but Plant was having a bit of a time with the high notes. That song should have been on Zep II, since I think Page refered to it as one that never got off the ground in the early days. But yeah, Take Me For A Little While is a great tune and is classic Page. One other song by Page that some of you should check out is Hummingbird on Pages Outrider record. Excellent earthy blues. Thanks for the memory jog K-Wise.

Yes, Outrider (Jimmy Page solo) is pretty good and the track Hummingbird is some of his better blues playing. It's been awhile since I've pulled that one out, too. Mostly because it's on cassette (if you remember those things). Robert does sing on one song on the album (The Only One), but it falls a little short - one of the more forgettabel tracks on the album.
I've always wanted to track down the sntk to Death Wish 2 that Page recorded. Anyone been able to find a copy of that?

I finally found the song Prelude off that album because a student of mine wanted to learn it. Great tune and borrows very, very heavily from Chopin's Prulude #4 in E minor. I think it is E minor. Never the less, great tune.
