Beck - Guero

been listening to this for a few days now

since the album is produced by the dust brothers, there will be inevitable comparisons to odelay. true, there are similarities. but where odelay was a collage of genres set to a funky beat, guero is more of a collage of moments in his career. the beat is still at the forefront of each track, but the sound is more straightforward (fewer musical tangents). here we have a revived beck-rap, some spanish lyrics, odd sexual euphemisms, strings a la serge gainsbourg, multi-octave melodies, and other elements of his past.

each of his recent albums have been very unique in their sound. this album is not a sweeping departure, but i'd say there is a bit more of a mexican influence at times. also an 8-bit video game feel on a few songs. but mostly he sounds like beck, which is kind of a new thing for him.

Just grabbed this one on Soulseek - two tracks in and I'm liking it a lot.

I was just wondering the other day if Beck had released anything new as of late.....glad I saw this thread.

I like artists who can't be pigeonholed into any specific genre, and he certainly fits that description. Midnite Vultures, though not one of his more popular disks, is still one of my all time favorites, by any artist. Awesome grooves on that.......

I'll have to check out the new one, for sure!

I'm not really enjoying Beck's new one.The first two tracks are pretty groovin', but everything else leaves me cold. Shame, cause I usually anything he dishes out.

I've been listening to this for a few months now and totally love it. It's still getting a lot of play time on the ipod even with all these new great releases out these days.

I'm enjoying Guero. Saw him perform on Later With Jools Holland where he also performed a song called Claphands. Not on the album but he promised a B-side. Its him on the acoustic with his band beating out an amazing rythum on the crockery and cutlery of a dining table. His new crazy dancer pouring wine in the glasses to change the pitch. Very impressive stuff. Would love a copy of it if anyone knows when/if its actually coming out.

clap hands is on the japanese import...and probably on the guero deluxe version. he sings the phrase "clap hands" a lot like "hell yes." the percussion is cool in the song though, sounds like he's doing an interesting live version too. another song on the extended versions that i really like is called chain reaction. it's a little like novacaine with processed super mario sounds.

I've been enjoying this album. For some reason, I seem to have a seasonal association with Beck and the summer. My one major criticism is that he uses the chorus "na na na na na" in at least three songs--that is just laziness by his standards. And I agree that the special tracks for Japan are worth hearing too.

I love this album as well. Yes, all of his albums have their own unique sound, and you can count on Beck for always trying something different, but in the end you can also count on it being Beck. There's a grounding quality in all of his albums that reminds you it's him behind the varying guises of his music.

I found it took a few listens for it to grow on me, but it's now one of my favourites of his albums.

By the way, did the deluxe edition come with a DVD?
