A little bit of Bright Eyes anyone?

What does everyone think of their two new albums? I just got it. It's nice, but kind of makes me angry that I already had most of the songs in a live recording.

I like them. I think Digital Ash is my favorite of the two, but I'm Wide Awake is not bad at all. I think it just needs to grow on me more. Lifted is still my favorite Bright Eyes album, I mean, how can he top that album? I don't think he can. Well, maybe he can, he has lots of music making ahead of him.

I saw him like 4-5 years ago after enjoying "Letting off the Happiness" a bit. He's a real asshole so i've refused to pick up anything else of his. i guess he's getting pretty big though, i keep hearing his name in publications i never expected. He was a lot nicer when he was playing with Commander Venus.

Why was he an asshole? I've never seen him play live before. Give us the scoop!

I saw him last winter in Pittsburgh with Jim James of My Morning Jacket and a relative new-comer on the folk scene, M. Ward. All three performances were absolutely amazing. Conor tore it up as he usually does. He wasn't an asshole at all, he got the crowd into the music. At the end, all three performers came out and sang "Girl From the North Country," one of my favorite Bob Dylan tracks (from Nashville Skyline).

The new albums are fantastic in my opinion. Conor Oberst is one of the best lyricists around today, which is definitely evident on both albums.

I have a couple friends from Omaha that grew up with him, and aparently he's always had some drug problems (I have no clue if he does anymore, the last i heard about it was maybe 2 or so years ago) but when he was in town i heard he was acting really arrogant and weird towards the club staff, and then at this party after the show which i was at, he freaked out and had a screamy/nervous breakdown kinda thing and then left. The next morning i heard that he had stolen a bunch of Meth from this girl and that there was some daterape type scenario which happened with her, but nothing ever came of it. The only thing i can confirm was that he was acting weird and that he freaked out. T'was creepy stuff.

i used to be a fan of bright eyes. in all honesty, sometimes he's a little too complainy for me. i think he creates great metaphors, and the type of dynamic music that stops when it gets good (instead of dragging on), though i have not heard his new albums.

He's undeniably whiny as fuck. Most of the time, he sounds like he's in tears. He's incredibly self-indulgent (check out the radio station bit in the second-to-last track of Fevers & Mirrors). To say that he's melodramatic is understatement.

And yet, he's got some stuff that's more than worthwhile. Because despite the bad aspects of his music, he's a great lyricist and cranks out some really catchy stuff.

I have Fevers & Mirrors and Lifted, and prefer the latter. My favorite songs include "Haligh, Haligh, a Lie, Haligh", "Don't Know When But a Day's Gonna Come", "Bowl of Oranges", and "The Calendar Hung Itself".

For those who have his other albums, what album would you recommend I get next?

i like the two new discs
then again, i'm only a casual fan
i can see how you can OD on his depressed mood

he's in pretty much every magazine right now. somehow blender got my name and now i'm getting that punchline of a publication. anyway, lodged between the lackluster writing, he briefly discusses drug use (in case someone was interested.)

saw him play last time he swug through the country; some of the songs made it on the wide awake album. i recall road to joy and, i think, landlocked blues.

I'm more a fan of Desaparecidos than Bright Eyes, it's a little more rocked out. Saw them live about 3 years ago, and he (Conor Oberst) was acting like an asshole IMO. But the rest of the band came out and chilled with the crowd and enjoyed the rest of the show since they opened for it.
