Ashlee Simpson turns down SNL for 2nd appearence
Ashlee Simpson turns down 'SNL'
Saturday, December 11 2004, 12:03 GMT -- by Daniel Kilkelly Ashlee Simpson has turned down an offer to make another appearance on Saturday Night Live. Simpson made headlines in October, when a technical error on the show exposed her use of a backing track, while fans had been expecting a live performance. She said, "I'm not going back to SNL. They asked me back. But I'm not going back. I figured I probably got the highest ratings for them this season." http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlf...d%20down%20snl. Do you guys think she will ever be taken seriously again? I have a feeling that her fans don't care and its kinda sad that a record company is spending money promoting her when that's one less real artist that could've been on the music scene. But I guess I was fooling myself when I thought the record companies were looking for real artists, rather than someone who is just marketable.

It's because she's Jessica's sister. If she wasn't she wouldn't have a career. But no they no longer look for talent. They're never gonna do that again. You have to be incredibly talented for them to even consider you for your talent. And then you have to be good looking to. You can change that though. By you I mean we in general. But we don't want to.

I think this is something that's been blown way out of proportion because everyone is so scared of having another Milli Vanilli pop up. She sang on her album and I've seen several of her live/taped performances where you can tell she's singing live. She has one screw up and people are automatically ready to burn her at the stake. Meanwhile people are still spending hundreds of dollars to see Britney Spears walk around stage for 2 hours moving her lips while never once attempting to even sing to a backing track. People need to lighten up.

I'm actually surprised to hear you say you've seen her live and she wasn't lip syncing. I believe you, I just find it surprising. I saw some of her reality show and in her rehearsals she didn't sound like she could sing AT ALL. I don't really like her sister's voice; it seems like she's trying to sound like a black woman, but I didn't think lil sis had any talent whatsoever and was just riding coat tails.
That said, I did see the original SNL and she handled it poorly. Blaming your band is lame. |

I've taken a few music business classes. I have laying around somewhere a list of the different qualities they look for in artists, ordered by importance. At the top of the list is not talent or musicianship, but marketability. I'll see if I can find it sometime.
