soulseek users, share your nicknames here!

hiya folks. with torrents being shot down left and right, many people are turning back to a more personal p2p to meet their legal, noncommercial, non-riaa produced musical needs (because that's the only thing we'd ever encourage sharing here, mister RIAA bot), alot of people are turning to soulseek. it's a fairly easy to use system with a very friendly interface and some great options, including preferential download priorities for people who you have added to your userlist. and in that vein, i'm opening this thread, for the benefit of all.

what's your username? mine is simply phredgreen (crazy, huh?), and while i have file sharing closed to random takers, people on my userlist are welcome to anything they might find with unlimited upload speeds. all you have to do is send a message letting me know who you are and what you're looking for, more likely than not i'll add you to my list with every expectation that you will do the same in return.

so what's your username?

i think there should be a TFP members room
named something similar to TFP or the Tilted or something so if people want to chat or not have to go searching for eachother it would be easier what do you all think?

I also have a fast connection when the internet's not screwed up (i'm at a university so it's off and on). I'll be adding all of you and hope you add me to

I've been offline for a few days, reinstalling my system, and now we're re-doing our mp3 server ...

hope to be back online soon, i need my fix.

....

and a couple things I want to mention, may be helpful -

1. cd ripping - check the Computer Forum, lots of good rec's in there.
(rather, 4 progs that get mentioned more than any others -
easy cd-da (not! free)
Exact Audio Copy
CDex
iTunes

any one should do fine.

bitrate - there's a reason why 192 is 'standard'. if you rip your own, no reason to go less.
sharing quality is better than quantity imo.

verification - I will love you if your albums verify. (freedb/sfv).

albums, albums, albums! - this is the beauty of slsk.
sure, people can d/l tracks if that's all they need ... but if all a person shares is tracks ... *grumble*.

anyways ... I love that we have a slsk thread, even just seeing other people's files is cool, a bit voyeuristic or so ...

i agree with sin that full consistent albums are important. By consistent I mean from the same rip or at least sound like it (sometimes you just don't know if a person got the tracks from different places and renamed them all alike). I check most of my albums by listening to most if not all of the tracks to make sure they sound consistent and if there is just one song that doesn't, I don't put it in my full albums folder. There may be a few from my early collecting days that I haven't caught yet, but my last 300 or so albums have been filtered well. I also haven't accepted anything under 192kb/s in the past two years or so.

About 200 of mine were ripped myself, but I didn't make a verifying file for them. Do you think it's too late to do that now since I've copied the whole collection to different hard drives 3 times?

Phredgreen - I must say that you have great taste in music...and you have something that I've been scouring the internet for in the past month and have found nothing. I will be getting that from you, and then I will thank you immensely

@ skinnymofo - conversion makes baby jesus cry

@ yatzr - making sfv's should be just fine, regardless of how much they've been shuffled around ... as long as all the bytes are still there, it's all good. I appreciate your standards, and admire your ambition. (my coll is just too damn big to listen to each album )
if you like phred's taste, we might have some things in common as well ... soon as i'm back online (still rearranging) i'll check you out.

..... but, if you (or anyone) have anything questionable ...

I highly recommend using a prog w/freedb support to verify.

Tag & Rename is what I use (not 'free') and I think it's one of the best.
HKsfv is my sfv'er, and it is free, and a great prog.

Check out CDex http://cdexos.sf.net . I would stay away from iTunes if I were you. iTunes is good for listening to music, but importing your CDs in MP3 format uses Apple's MP3 encoder, which AFAIK is the worst encoder out there.

CDex OTOH uses LAME. :-)

well, i think i'm gonna go with EAC + LAME. i already have EAC installed and have used it to rip audio CDs for years for trading live stuff, so no reason to change what has worked for me. now to get lined up with the sfv verification stuff - i've used it to verify stuff i've downloaded in the past, so i know how nice that is.

what about md5s for verification? i already have mkwACT installed, too, so it'd be super easy for me to create md5s on a directory after extracting... do folks sometimes do that instead of the sfvs?

the mp3 'scene' uses sfv...it's sort of a 'standard' ... seems to be more of a tradition thing than anything ...

a quick google found this link which doesn't say much more than that ...

... I'm not sure if sfv processing is also perhaps quicker (on the glftpd servers where most of these 'proper' releases are distrib'd).

dunno ... hksfv (and assumably? any good sfv checker) also does md5, so I'd say, for in this case, go ahead and md5 if that makes you happy.

it makes me happy that you simply care at all
