Obscure Music
So this is how it goes.. Someone lists a band that isn't considered well-known and a few songs by them. The next poster tries to find those songs and listens to them (not encouraging pirating, but however you find songs, for example, Windows Media Player song sampler). Then they evaluate the band and give a band of their own, along with some songs.
I'll start it off with Band: Emery Walls Fractions Disguising Mistakes With Goodbyes |

:/ Maybe some more in-depth reviews next time, rather than just "Not bad."
![]() Haven: Very good vocals and melodies accompanying the vocals. They're pretty close to pop music though, so not really something I would listen to in my spare time. Not bad though. Band: Dead Poetic Songs: New Medicines Vanus Empty Molotov |

New Medicines: The band is very tight on this song, and it works well. The riffs are good, and it's fairly catchy.
Vanus Empty: This song is good all the way through. I like the more melodic guitar. It has a nice chorus. Molotov: I don't like the riffing much, it seems to bottom-heavy, but I like the section with the refrain. Great bridge. Overall: Much better than I expected. If this is emo, then emo isn't bad. Unfortunately every time someone hears the word "emo" they think of a song like "The Reason". This band seems pretty good, and they would probably make for a good concert. My recommendation: Nick Drake Songs: River Man Northern Sky Fruit Tree |

Wonderful mellow folkish stuff. Vaguely like the vocals of Coldplay, without the annoying falsettos. I'm a big fan of "Things Behind the Sun", myself.

Haha, very cool. They sound like the Beatles. Great vocals and acoustic guitar. I might even buy some of their songs off iTunes Music Store, very mellow and feel-good music.
Band: Hawthorne Heights Songs: Ohio Is For Lovers Life On Standby Niki FM Btw, Dead Poetic is considered a Rock/Screamo/Alternative band, so not your usual "Emo"... I've also never heard Hoobastank referred to as Emo either, so that's interesting. If you like Dead Poetic, I also recommend looking into the songs "Glass In The Trees" and "The Dream Club Murders." Those two, along with "New Medicines" are all downloadable (legally) on www.purevolume.com/deadpoetic . Last edited by Avail; 12-21-2004 at 08:14 PM.. |

The three Hawthorne Heights songs listed reminded me of Taking Back Sunday/Finch-ish combination of melodic song structures mixed with various moments outbursts of energy

Well PARK... to me sounds like the starting line'ish and other pop-rock bands out there nothing really defines them from the rest... nice vocals. lyrics and music in general: ok it wont fade into the backround like elevator music but wont really stand out either.
Well its not really a band more of a dude. "Band": Otto Von Schirach Songs: Spine Yogurt Fork Surgery La Sangre Del Dedo Intelecto

Well, Mr. Otto was, interesting, to say the least. It seemed like some music that might belong in a very intense pinball videogame. I also got the impression that more than a few minutes of this music might make my head implode. I find the variety of sounds and noises he uses very intrigueing (sp?), however I feel he could have put them to better use, IMHO

ok ive downloaded both Sage Francis and Pain of Salvation as it's got a little bit muddled.
Sage Francis: liked this far more thasn i thought i would when i realised it was rap. haven't tended to like any rap before but this was quite good. more mellow.. the gyu didnt seem to be falling over his words trying to spit them out so fast and the music in theback ground was quite good too.. not too repetitive. i may well download the rest of the songs on the albums. Pain of Salvation: I kind of like these guys. i like them when they're being more restrained and quiet. I'm more of a fan of the intrumentation than the vocals (are there 2 vocalists? in the perfect element i think i heard two). i cant think of too much to say about them. i wouldnt complain if a friend played them or anything, but i wouldnt choose to listen to them myself. my songs: Clann Zu You're listening to a dead man speak There Will Be No Morning Copy You'll Have to Swim |

Clann Zu: Not too bad!! Not too great either! Nothing special to me. I'm not going to naysay them, but I'm not going to praise either. I got the impression of "just another band". I didn't really like the singer's voice. I'm not going to say he's a bad singer, and he's not whiney, I just didnt really like his tone. Never really held my attention.

Dogfight: They sound kind of regular. I like to call it "Radio-Rock". Easy on the ears, but not very original. Reminds me of Nickelback, but just a little heavier.

Whoah there thinktank! :P
I'll review two of yours and not list a band. That way someone can review the two others and post a band of theirs. Saetia: The guitar/bass was wonderful but I must say, I was surprised at the vocals when I first heard them. I admit it was rather weird at first but I think they'd sound rather good if they did screamo instead of the "Emo Violence" (I only heard 30 second segments of those 3 songs). The Telepathic Butterflies: Heh, they sound like they're from the Beatles era. In fact, at some points they sound exactly like them. In my opinion at least. But that's not a bad thing! Their vocals and background instruments are great. |

Well, they're not obscure in the NW...in fact they've got quite a cult following. But I love them--and they're obscure to the rest of the world. I give you:
Floater. http://www.floatermusic.com/ Heavy rock with amazing lyrics. They're also a really great live band, so if you ever get the chance, check out one of their shows.

listened to floater, pretty good stuff. well made, good rhythm... i listened to "alone" and "diamond." diamond almost had an 80's feel to it, but not in a bad way. overall i thought it was a cool sound.
my band comes out of my hometown, and it's very unlikely you've heard them unless you live in austin or houston (TX). Overshot songs: Pulling Away Deciet P.R. (pitt's revenge) doubt you will find them anywhere online except http://www.overshot.org (go into the mp3 archive)

outside of game....
I dl'd this Pain of Salvation stuff... it wasnt as heavy as I thought it was going to be, and some of the songs had parts I liked, but they tend to jump around a bit and the songs get messy and confused, and then try and fuse into a creshendo, which may be artistically what they wanted, but isnt so easy to listen to. Im a lot more into lyrics than anything else in music... so it was ok and I wouldnt listen to it if it came on the radio, I wouldnt seek out more of their stuff

overshot -- i REALLY like their song PR. driving guitars.....made me want to get up and move around. Revelation was another song i liked. it's hard for me to categorize these guys. dark, driving rock.....good stuff.....they remind me of early Fuel, but not as poppy.
fairfax: www.fairfaxnation.com they are out of austin. you can also find them on purevolume and myspace songs-- a night like this and fallback plans and oxygen Last edited by radioguy; 01-09-2005 at 03:07 AM.. |
