A question of music

When people make broad, sweeping statements about a band or a genre of music, do they ever research before accusing?

I have caught myself a few times and when I gave the genre/band a chance, I liked the 50% of the time.

It's just something I noticed...assumptions for the basis of a point.

For me, it is near humorous with all of the Metallica threads popping up. You asked the pro-napster why the hey Metallica, "Because they stopped Napster". Well, why did they stop Napster? They can never echo the bands reasons (which they have stated numerous times) and it has caused some control deprived teenagers an ego boost. *NOTE: I do not believe that for everyone, I have respect for most of the people, if they know their facts.*

Well...myself....when I first heard Swedish Death Metal as a whole...i was like...fuck that, i hate growling....I searched around more and came up with Meshuggah and In Flames, both of which fulfil my requirements.

Funny how those things work out.

Anyways, just was interested on the communities view of the topic.

I see what you mean but the problem lies in the cattle who stick to thier opinion of "I dont like Techno!!" (for example). It reinforces the boundries. An open minded person can easily slip from one "genre" to the next because they have no pre-set boundries, Its free & easy.
I have only two categories for music; stuff I like & stuff I dont like. Not to imply that all the stuff I dont like isnt good music its just not my flavour & I try to be respectfull if somebody I meet adores Boys 2 men.
On Metallica, I dont suppourt thier anti Napster philosophy, I believe the cat is out of the bag & ultimately they are wasting thier time. I like a few of thier old tunes but thats as far as it goes. I dont think you have to be either pro-Metallica or pro-Napster.
Peace.

I know what I like and I know what I don't like. I've heard people argue with me that I "just need to hear this one song by this band" and I'll be a fan. Doesn't matter that I've already heard the song a few times and hated it. Like I said, I know what I like. I'm not being stubborn, but it's almost impossible to get me to listen to another type of music and enjoy it.

What if you havent?

Magpie0001, I'd just chalk it up as another example of someone who hears music rather than listens to it. No point in trying to open the locked doors when their owner likes them closed, methinks.

Antagony said it much better than I could have...heh.

People get set in their ways, and continually expanding becomes harder and harder.

I like listening to new music, but hell, I'm still discovering music from the 80's from bands I've known for years. Plus, who likes to listen to their fav groups just a few times? Most of us get a decent sized collection of music and stick to it, adding only a few additional songs/groups periodically after we've reached our own "critical mass".

It's just human nature.

I'm always willing to give it a listen, but a lot of the time when I listen to the song, I won't like it. Then all that I'll hear is, "pttth, how could you not like it?" *shrug* Like I said, when it comes to music styles, I know what I like, but it never hurts to just listen once.
