Suggestions on Classic Rock?

Hey guys, I've recently gotten really into Led Zep, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Pink Floyd but I was wondering what other classic rock bands/songs you all would recommend me listening to. My knowledge of classic rock is limited so any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks. :hmm:

Classic Rock: A Comprehensive Listing

Locobot 11-29-2004 02:49 PM

imho, the most underrated band of the 70s is Thin Lizzy - It's out of print, but if you can get a copy of "Vagabonds of the Western World" you will thank me. Oh man I'm going to go home and listen to that right now.

Bowie's - Ziggy Stardust... is another great rocker--also recommend "Low" and "Station to Station" by Bowie if you like Pink Floyd.

Skynyrd, Zepplin, and Floyd are good, but are really overplayed on the radio to this day along with the Eagles and few others. I really can't stand "classic rock" stations because they play the same damn 10 bands all the time.

I hope you have a turntable because there is so much classic rock out there that never made it to digital format or is out of print.

K-Wise 11-29-2004 03:05 PM

I could never overplay my floyd CD's.

Asta!!

there's many bands I could throw out as suggestions, but I'll just mention the Allman Brothers. there's many others in the thread that present_future posted a link to above. it has pretty much any classic rock band worth listening to. you might have to go to the second page to see the most updated list

fckm 11-29-2004 04:45 PM

Paul Simon, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Van Halen

silent_jay 11-29-2004 05:10 PM

The Doors, Janis Joplin, Blue Cheer, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish, Joe Cocker.

I think I'm the only Canadian who hates Rush passionatley, I just can't stand them

Harry Cox 11-29-2004 05:16 PM

Cream- Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce. Probably one of the greatest live bands of all time, and set to reunite in 2005.

OFKU0 11-30-2004 10:35 AM

Queen, the Who, old Aerosmith( no they weren't just a 90's sappy power ballad band), Styx, Blue Oyster Cult

gboz 11-30-2004 10:39 AM

Paul Simon right next to Hendrix? What the?!?!
Sorry. Couldn't help it.

Daoust 11-30-2004 10:40 AM

Why, oh why do I have to be the one who keeps reminding people of the most important classic rock band since 1970 after Led Zeppelin - THE ALLMAN BROTHERS. You must begin and end with this band. All else is details....

byesman 11-30-2004 10:49 AM

Jethro Tull, as well. My personal favorite is Pink Floyd, but just listen and explore.

Arroe 11-30-2004 03:00 PM

i picked up the rerelease of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominoes (Eric Clapton, Duane Allman...) and it is off the hook. Definately something to check out.

Melllvar 11-30-2004 04:01 PM

The Who. I give 'Who's Next' & 'The Who Sell Out' a few spins in my cd player.

nfuehgo23 11-30-2004 07:29 PM

Thanks a lot guys. I guess the toughest part before posting was seeing what classified as classic rock. Anyways, I plan to be enlightened.

roachboy 11-30-2004 07:56 PM

on pink floyd: check out piper at the gates of dawn, saucer full of secrets and ummagumma.
genesis: nursery crime, foxtrot, love, the lamb lies down on broadway
can: tago mago, ege baymasi, future days
faust: pretty much anything
henry cow: same as above
roxy music: first 3 albums
the stooges: raw power, funhouse

and the collected works of t. rex. obviously.

dunno if these are "classic rock" or not.
they are from The Time Period, however.
they are among the few things from that age that i can still listen to.

trickyy 12-01-2004 12:20 AM

yes, get meddle. eees good. and atom heart mother is a nice change of pace. aren't cd's cheaper online? you should be able to find the wall for cheap, especially used.

here are some more suggestions
brian eno - another green world, here come the warm jets
serge gainsbourg - histoire de melodie nelson
television - marquee moon
beatles - white album (obvious)
neil young - harvest, after the gold rush

K-Wise 12-01-2004 03:33 AM

I already listed a shit load of Classic Rock artists on tha Comprehensive Listing post nfuehgo. You should really check it out. It probably has all of the best bands one can think of by now.

Asta!!

quadro2000 12-01-2004 06:34 AM

The Who. See my avatar. (That's Pete Townshend.) Start with "Who's Next," it's the most "classic rock" of all their stuff.

Nefir 12-01-2004 07:34 AM

In addition to everything else thats been mentioned, be sure to check out King Crimson as well (especially their earlier stuff, like In the Court of the Crimson King, Lizard, Red, etc.).

roachboy 12-01-2004 07:45 AM

geez--i forgot crismo--what was i thinking?
king crimson: larks tongues in aspc, starless and bible black
mothers of invention: freak out, absolutely free, weasels ripped my flesh, overnight sensation, etc etc
captain beefheart: trout mask replica, doc at the radar station, safe as milk

Locobot 12-01-2004 01:58 PM

I 2nd Capt. Beefheart - Safe as Milk now you have to get it. If you like that you'll definitely want to get the Mirror Man Sessions which was reissued at the same time (rhino records I think?).

I wouldn't classify Television as classic rock, but really get that too.

gyroscope 12-02-2004 05:28 AM

you could like grand funk railroad,i think

a definite on KC. i was going to suggest them if no one else did first. if you like pink floyd, then king crimson might suit your tastes as well

ThrasheR 12-23-2004 11:59 PM

DEEP PURPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

start with Machine Head

eltardo 12-26-2004 11:42 PM

I'm not sure if this'll exactly fit your request but I'd highly recommend some Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Johnny Thunders, The MC5, and Iggy and the Stooges. I'd definitely consider them classic rock'n'roll myself. It's some raw and rebellious stuff and that's what I have in mind when I think rock'n'roll.

omega2K4 12-27-2004 10:03 PM

Blue Öyster Cult, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Foghat, Bob Seger, Dream Theater (Not really classic, but they kick ass), Mountain, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Thin Lizzy, and uh there are tons more.

c172g 12-28-2004 11:54 AM

Probably not what most here would consider "classic rock", but Joe Satriani is the shit as far as I'm concerned. I've got hundreds of CD's & grew up with the stones, zep, allman bros, etc, and still come back to Satriani. If you like to sing along, it's not very good as about 98% of his songs are instrumental, and the other 2% where he does sing should be removed from the CD. Start with Starry Night, Summer Song, Friends, Surfing With The Alien...you can't go wrong with any of his stuff.

All you classic rock purists can begin the verbal bashing now...

blitz.fenix 12-28-2004 12:06 PM

Motorhead and Dire Straits

pixelbend 12-29-2004 12:42 PM

The Alan Parsons Project...which was a hovercraft I think.

Seriously, there are a lot of good bands listed here. Enough to keep you going for quite a while. I'm not sure if it qualifies as "classic rock", but ZZ Top is always a good bet.

Paradise Lost 12-29-2004 02:43 PM

For more "Musical" classic rock:

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (teh best), Moondance (awesome, totally different from AW), Tupelo Honey (Like Moondance, only cooler).
The Band - Music from Big Pink (Their Best, I think), 'Brown' Album (The Band) (A CLOSE Second)
The Who - Who's Next
The Eagles - Anything before Hotel California (not saying HC is bad, just different from their previous stuff.)
Yes - Close to the Edge, The Yes Album
Rush - 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Moving Pictures (If you like a more 'pop' sound, with tons o synth.)
Traffic - Not any album in particular, just some good songs - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Dear Mr. Fantasy, etc...
Steely Dan - No one album in particular either, but anything before and including Aja works.
Genesis - Anything up until Peter Gabriel left for a more prog feel, anything after for a more light hearted Genesis.
Jethro Tull - Aqualung (More rockie), Benefit (Bluesy/Rock), Thick as a Brick (Sounds folkish, definitely concept.)
Elton John - Pre 1980 work
Billy Joel - Anything before and including an Innocent Man
Bob Dylan - Whatever floats your boat with him. He played many different styles o music.
Da Beatles - See above. If you like the lovey stuff, or the more inspirational post Sgt. Peppers stuff.
The Allman Brothers - Anything before and including Brothers and Sisters
Alan Parsons Project - Prog stuff...
And of Course. Bob Seger! Anything really. All his stuff is great. (Post Back in '72 his best work.)

And as for Classic Rock radio stations, look around, especially on Shoutcast, you'll find one that actually has a good database of records to play. I love the one near me in Youngstown, Ohio, you won't hear the same song, sometimes even group, played again for days... RadioStorm Classic rock on Shoutcast used to be the absolute best, but I don't think it's around anymore... RockandRollFM is pretty decent too, or 9412.

Delvid 12-30-2004 11:43 AM

Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Each one has 30+ year history with early bands and solo work. Neil has always been far and away my fav. Old rocker here.

munchen 12-30-2004 12:05 PM

The Ramones. i was enlightened to this band a year ago and they blew me away. they still do. awsome band and among my select favourites. enjoy
