Yer parents got you into stuff you got them into stuff....

My parents are constantly getting me into old music that was before my time (I'm only 20) but at the same time I get my mom into a lot of my music too. So what have your parent's gotten you into and what have you got your parents into (If anything at all)

What my parent's got me into...pretty long fuckin list

America
Don Mclean
Jim Croce
Rush (dad)
Yes
Joe Cocker
Janis Joplin
The Who/Rodger Daltrey
Journey
Alan Parsons Project
Electric Light Orchestra
Sammy Hagar
Pink Floyd (dad)
Clapton
The Doors
Elton John
John Lennon/Paul McCartney/The Beatles
Triumph
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Carly Simon
Carol King
Barry Manilow
Billy Joel
Eddie Money
Grand Funk Railroad
Bad Company
Rod Stewart
Bread
Boz Scaggs
Bette Middler (Don't laugh)
Seals & Crofts
Cat Stevens
Neil Young
Tracy Chapman
Supertramp
Three Dog Night
Bob Welch
Eagles
Doobie Brothers
Ricardo Montaner
Robin Trower
Scorpions

hmm I'll have to get back to that list way too many to think of now.

Now as far as music I've gotten my parents into it's only my mom because my dad is a sheep and refuses to acknowledge that any music of mine could possibly be good UNTIL he hears the DJ's at 102.7 play their music and then he's like "Hey these guys ain't bad" I'm like "I know I told you about them years ago poseour" Now music I've gotten my mother into as of late would be...

Los Lonely Boys (she loves them)
Gavin Degraw
Jason Mraz
Keane
Silverchair (Diorama album..if you don't have it yet WTF you waitin for??!!)
Counting Crows
Haven
Blues Traveler (a song or two)
Train (some)
Travis (the song Luv haha)
Josh Groban
A feller by the name of Michael Lord

And I'm hearing people all the time that I know she'd like I just don't have the money to get the albums yet. This list will probably grow on both sides due to some I've forgotten or some that I haven't yet gotten into. I realize most parents aren't very open minded so not too many of you will have any "I got my parents into this" additions but my mom likes anyone who can sing for one so if he sings good she likes it. A nice beat she likes it. Good piano or harmonica she loves it haha.

Hmm.... my dad and I seem to work on a two way street. I can't count how many times I've called him to be like "check out this band" and he says he was going to tell me the same thing...

But, he's gotten me into a lot of 'older' bands/artists, like Jim Croce, Supertramp, GNR, Tom Petty, CCR, Twisted Sister, Tracy Chapman, Elton John, etc... and I'll never forget the day he brought home the yellow tape of BNL... that was a great day

I've gotten him hooked on Ataris, Simple Plan, Our Lady Peace, Sister Hazel, Barlow, Great Big Sea, the Watchmen, etc...

Neil Diamond
Barry Manilow
Frank Sinatra
Tony Bennett
Patsy Cline
Any Big Band/Swing type music

From me they got:
The Grateful Dead (I made my mom a cd and wouldn't tell her the band until she listened to the whole thing - my 72 year old momma is now a Dead Head)
Rod Stewart
Sarah McLaughlin
Eric Clapton
oooh and Steve Ray Vaughn

While my mom is not a very musically-knowledgeable person, my dad had a big influence on my musical taste. He's a big prog rock fan, and so am I. While there are not that many bands that we both listen to, our music sounds very similar.

Here are a few bands that he did contribute:

- Alice Cooper
- Black Sabbath
- Can
- 10cc
- Carlos Santana
- John McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra
- Kansas/Proto-Kaw
- King Crimson
- Nazareth
- Pink Floyd
- Queen
- Ravi Shankar
- Steve Howe
- Tangerine Dream
- Uriah Heep
- Zappa

As for bands that I contributed...
- Ayreon
- Bethany Curve
- Cortex Bomb
- Djam Karet
- Dream Theater
- The Flower Kings
- Gordian Knot
- Lacrimosa
- Prem Joshua
- Red Hot Chili Peppers

Not quite as many

The Beatles
The Eagles
& Phil Collins (but I managed to get back out of it...) lol

I got my Dad into:

A complete disregard for any Hip Hop music
& Whitney Houston..? (Not really a fair trade is it..?)

interesting thread....and i makes me feel really old as well.

from my father:
beethoven
haydn

to my father:
the idea that bach was an improvisor

from my mother:
louis armstrong
alot of early 1960s pop music
ragtime and stride piano

to my mother:
it's hard to say--she never understood much of anything about the way i am interested in music. we have worked out a number of types that we talk across though--big band jazz in particular--she likes count basie--i convinced her that it followed that she would like some sun ra.
i tried to use the same argument to get her interested in hip hop.
i dont think it worked.

Not my parents but my uncle got me into music, and he died before I was born. My cousins had an old 8 track of a jam session he and my family had back in the early 70's. They played a lot of country, but good stuff like Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, and one of my faves John Denver. There was also Neil Young, Peter Paul and Mary, and others...

I have contributed nothing to my parents. They're fairly conservative Christians who don't listen to regular stuff...

I grew up with Bob Dylan by osmosis....my Dad is the hugest Dylan fan. He also dug the Beatles and the Stones, and nowadays listens to very little else...still. I've tried making him cool compilations to get some new music into him but it's like pushing shit uphill.

Mum was very much into Janis Joplin and Elton John, and I have such vivid memories of her playing 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' and 'Honky Château.'

My kids tend to like some of the music I like, and my older girl is developing quite an interesting ear for music, which is really gratifying. But she won't tolerate Mudhoney.....yet.

I grew up raiding my parent's record collection, so I can't even begin to list all the bands my parents got me into, more by the fact that they were just there than any real effort. I do remember my dad specifically introducing me to Blue Öyster Cult, Rush and Pink Floyd though. I also picked up a little Beatles from him and mom, and Billy Joel from mom.

I've introduced mom to Loreena McKennit (sp?) but she mostly digs country (yuck) and my dad likes to stick with his classic rock.

My mom got me hooked on everything classic rock, and then I went and bought up a shit load of albums, and got her addicted to albums, and lesser known songs by the same artists she hooked me on (Particularly Led Zeppelin, she claims its not fair that I will own all of their albums before she does).

Other then that, I dont think I have contributed much to her musical tastes. Though the White Zombie (Devils Music: Vol 1) album I just put in for her to listen to she was into.

My dad is a hardcore bluegrass and country music nut (old timey country music, not the pseudo rock and roll they play nowadays)
My mom likes gospel and some classical

I suppose that I got some classical from mom, but I absolutely despise country music. Always have, always will. Dad says I must be the milkman's kid.

My dad doesn't like more than 1-2 songs from my favorite bands. He'll listen to some metallica, nirvana, a little audioslave but I don't think he'd actively seek to listen to any of them.

He's got me into Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Bros, Pink Floyd, Credence Clearwater, Charlie Daniels among others from an early age then I started getting into stuff like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and other bands he never really listened to when he was young.

BTW Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man is much better than Charlie Daniels with all due respect
