Are you into jazz?

Well, i've only started being into jazz quite recently.

I started out with Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and Dave Brubeck. Love esp the Complete in a Silent Way by Miles Davis. Since then my collection has expanded.

Right now, my favourite is Stacey Kent. Her voice and style is incredibly smooth. I seriously recommend her "Collection" album.

And that young 14 year old lass, Renee Olstead, wow, what a voice on such a young girl!

So what are your favourites? Any recommendations? :)

Brubeck all the way!

You may also want to check out Chico Hamilton's "Ellington Suite"

Very much so...

brubeck?
for pianists, check out thelonius monk or cecil taylor or ran blake or early (and only early) chick corea or keith jarret's american quartet recordings (with dewey redman, charlie haden and paul motian) or anthony davis or fred van hove or sun ra....

if i was to recommend a couple jazz rcords that i think worth checking out beyond the above (all pianists, all amazing players--and a short list of them no less) i would say maybe julius hemphill's dogon a.d. or the art ensemble of chicago's vast body of work, or sun ra's vast body of work, or coltrane from impressions onward, or john carter's work, or ornette coleman (beauty is a rare thing is an astonishing compilation--expensive, but great--if you have access to a library with a good collection, get it from there)

there is so much of this music out there.
hope that you have an unreasonable amount of fun wandering about in it.

No. No I am not.

I like tasteful jazz like Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. Smooth jazz just sucks.

Beyond a doubt. Her rendition of Someone To Watch Over Me melts my 42 year old heart.

Softcore jazz, pop jazz, barely jazz - Diana Krall. For some reason her "Girl In The Other Room" (song, not album) does it for me. Especially her cute piano interlude in the middle.

quiet storm, pseudo-jazz, the kind of drek you hear in supermarkets, the whiny school of sax playing pioneered by hacks on the order of kenny g--all this is a cartoon jazz, a joke. the superficial features of jazz reduced to wallpaper. a kind of death mask. it has no relation to what the music was, is, can be.

Jazz is my being. I teach, perform, write and listen to it as much as I possibly can.

I'm into just about every kind of Jazz music with the acception of the terribly obscure or smoother Jazz. I love old vocalists, not the newesr stuff as much. Example, Sinatra with Bassie's band would be what I'd like, not so much as Krall's music (although it's pretty good in it's own right)

I started off, like a lot with Miles, Trane, Parker. Now I still dig those cats but I listen to everyone.

Right now I am into Scofields new Trio album, going back to some Wayne Shorter records (speak no evil, ju-ju) and this morning listened to Kind of Blue (trying to teach one of the Solo's to a student so I needed it fresh in my ears). I'm working on my own album right now (at least the writing stages) and am preparing to go back to school and get my Masters in Jazz performance.

Jazz is life! lol

Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um. As vital a jazz album as there gets.
