Favorite Beatles Cover
I saw a new Beatles thread and was gonna go off on a rant on why there are so many Beatles topics here. But I just happened to be listening to Bela Fleck playing a medly of Beatles tunes on the banjo and thought I'd see what everyone's favorite covers are. I recall some greats that I have heard in concert by The Moody Blues and Yes. I think what I just heard by Bela has got to be the most interesting.

My first reaction is to say "In My Life" by Johnny Cash. The lyrics take on an entirely different meaning when sung by someone on the verge of passing on as opposed to someone in their mid 20's.
|
"Come Together", by Spiralmouth (sample available here). It's a cappella, with a great slow grind to it.
|
Not a Beatle's cover but Pearl jam was covering "Gimme Some Truth" by Lennon on their latest tour. Definitely download it if you can find it, is amazing!
|
The entire "I Am Sam" soundtrack.

There are many well known covers; I'll tab "Everybody's Got Something To Hide (Except For Me And My Monkey) by Kirsten Hirsh (hope I spelled that right). It was on a disc included with an UNCUT magazine a couple of years ago, and I actually like it better than the original.

Joe Cocker - "With a Little Help From My Friends"
I hate the original version. Also, the Vines cover of "I'm Only Sleeping" and the Fiona Apple cover of "Across the Universe" are both pretty cool, though neither surpasses the original. |
"Because" as covered by Creeper Lagoon. A very true-to-the-original version, with a slightly edgier guitar line.
|
STP did "Revolution", and I thought it was really good.

a barbershop quartet called "Reprise" did an acapella version of Blackbird...gotta be the most incredible beatles cover i've ever heard.

I am also very fond of Aerosmith's "Come Together" and Earth Wind & Fire's "Got To Get You Into My Life" But the best one I have heard was a rendition of "Imagine" that Neil Young did on of the the Sept 11 tributes, and I am not a fan of Neil...at all. |
U2's version of "Helter Skelter"
|
I believe the wallflowers did a cover of "I'm looking through you" that I liked. Why? I dunno

Years ago, Roxy music did an album without Brain Ferry, and called the band "801". They do a cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows" that is, in my opinion, far superior to the original. That's got to be my favorite Beatles cover.
I'm also partial to the Motley Crue version of Helter Skelter. |
Phish does a pretty killer Blackbird, and Jerry Garcia used to do a beautiful Dear Prudance.

I usually hate Beatles covers (who can do it better than the original?) but I was recently at a Dead concert, and they played Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, and did it beautifully. Not better, but different. They were able to give their own unique stamp to it without stomping all over it.

vote #3 for aerosmith's cover of "come together"

I prefer Rufus Wainwright's "Across the Universe" to Fiona's. Apple sounds like the first time she heard the song was minutes before recording her own.

I'm REALLY kicking myself for not seeing her last tour now! |
Recently heard an "imagine" cover by a perfect circle was pretty good

Stillborn, I said Pearl Jam...not sure who the "she" reference is too...maybe PJ Harvey?
I'll second Joe Cocker's "Help from my friends"...beautiful, gives ya chills. |
When I saw Pearl Jam in Vancouver last year, Eddie Vedder came out before the opening act (Idlewild) and just rocked us with a version of "Hide Your Love Away." It was intense, but sadly it wasn't included on the official bootleg... kind of annoying, but a great song regardless. I think a studio version might be on the I Am Sam soundtrack actually.
