Ok - I'll do my best to keep my comments on the music portion of the question. I agree with several of the comments that were made that a lot of "Christian" music sucks, just as most top 40/ commercial/ whatever music sucks.
Here's what I think is interesting. I have several friends who are very talented musicians, who are also Christians, and who have absolutely NO desire to participate in the Nashville/CCM music scene. Their reasons tend to stem from the fact that most of the music is pretty crappy... typically formulaic song structure and uninspired lyrics. So they produce music, and of course there are some songs that have themes or lyrics that are influenced by their faith... but it's not a sing-along bible verse. My guess is that when bands like Evanescence go out of their way to distance themselves from the whole contemporary Christian scene, they are reacting to the idea of being labeled along with the rest of the crap that's in that scene. I don't see them claiming they aren't Christians... just that they music was never intended to be MARKETED as Christian. I think the *marketing* part of this is important... "Christian" music is really nothing more than a great marketing idea that has created a huge profit center for some mediocre musicians... just like the whole boy band craze allowed plenty of other idiots to make money selling crap. So I look for music that is interesting and lyrics that are well written and really could care less if the artist goes to church, prays, etc... if the music speaks to me, that's all that's really important in my mind. |
