The Black Crowes

I remember a while back when they did that 100 greatest hard rock bands of all time list on VH1 and they had chosen The Black Crowes, Richie Sambora said and I quote "As far as a modern day blues band is concerned...Who's better?" I've been thinkin bout that. I know there is definitely the possibility of someone out there being better I just can't think of anyone. Closest I can think of is Blues Travelver....and they come VERY close but I don't think I could honestly say they're even as good let alone better. So who do you think could possibly be better than the Black Crowes as far as MODERN day blues bands are concerned? By modern I of course mean either a little before them, a little after them, or quite recent.

Richie Sambora is an excellent guitarist no matter what he plays. The Crowes were at their best at the Greek with Jimmy Page. Even before they had that Stoney's blues thing goin' on

Didn't Aerosmith just try some bluesy thing? Whatever it was, it sucked, and I am a HUGE Aerosmith fan....

I've been meaning to check out that album thoroughly. I'm a huge fan too and I had very high hopes for it.

As did I... very cool concept. But from what I've heard of it, it didn't really pan out. Perhaps its just a style clash, I dunno....

ps... This thread reminded me of another great band. I don't know if I would have considered them bluesy, but I can see it....

They were on A&E and I honestly haven't seen them rock as hard and play as well. Honkin' for Bobo I think it is. Sure bets the sappy ballads that the record company execs wanted them to keep pumping out. 70's Aerosmith in 2004. Who would have thunk it.

meh, difference of opinion. They've done much more than just sappy ballads before this though.

Yeah it's Honkin On Bobo alright.

I gotta agree with more than just sappy ballads post 1970's Aerosmith. I mean for instance....GET A GRIP (from 1993) was and still is a very good and listenable album with maybe 2 sappy ballads and good sappy ballads to boot.

Then ya have Pump (1989)....also another pretty kick ass album in it's own right

And before that one the comeback album Permanent Vacation.

I mean I definitely agree that by the time Girls Of Summer came out Aerosmith had gone all to hell....even they said the record was a piece a shit. Just Push play had some pretty kick ass songs on it so I let it slide but Girls Of Summer was too much. I thought for sure we'd lost em by then. Then they decide to do Honkin On Bobo....I read all about it in Guitar Magazine and I gotta say I'm still very intrigued by them doing an actual blues album with the original Aerosmith style of the 70's....sadly I was born in 84 so any albums they had before 89 (with the exception that MTV didn't have as many videos back then so they were still playing videos that were 3,4,5 years old) I hadn't heard any older Aerosmith albums other than what my parents had and played for me when I was a kid. I remember the first time I heard Dream On (having been used to the raspier voice he started embracing more over the years) I thought it was Queen singing it cause his voice is just SO much clearer back then than it is now...at least on that song. Well I went off subject yeah they had plenty of great albums in the 80's and the 90's....it's once 2000 kicked in that we started seein less rock n more pop.

The Allman Brothers are going strong and came out with a great album last year that I'd rank as one of the best to come out all year (and are still a huge touring draw). If we're talking blues-based rock bands, I'd rank both the Allmans and Gov't Mule above the Black Crowes (although I'm definitely a Crowes fan).

But they are putting out fresh stuff that is worlds beyond most music out there, not just playing Greatest Hits shows like most other older bands out there that are just pulling down a paycheck by playing their standards. These guys are playing phenomenal shows filled with a great bit of new material. With the new lineup in place, they're better than they've been in over 20 years. Check out the Beacon DVD to see what I mean.

Gov't Mule and the North Mississippi Allstars are churning out some great stuff lately too and, I think, have a much more blues-based approach than the Crowes.

^ Gotcha. I'm really impressed by the new guitarist the Almans picked up. He's a great slide player. I wanna get the DVD of it. Sadly I haven't checked out enough music to know Gov't Mule or NMA. Got any tracks I can listen too?
