Gene Krupa is the godfather of drummers!
Keith Moon taught 'em all how to rock! Ringo Starr was the school of cool! Everybody else stands on their shoulders, eats at their table, owes them everything!

Vinnie Colaiuta is high on my list.
Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl and Mike Portney are all great drummers too... but Vinnie is my favourite (besides me ofcourse) - Everybody should have a copy of Sting's "Ten Summoner's Tales" - Fantastic!

With Bonham though, people misjudged his talent for raw verocity and as a result was labelled a heavy drummer which he was, but also missed the musicianship in the fray. If you listen closely enough you will not only hear different motifs in each fill but also a texture that was personalized and distinct in each beat he played. As a pro musician, these understated rhythms and textures are clear as day, and I smile at greatness much like I do all competant musicians from all genres of music and thank my lucky stars.

Keith Moon above and beyond anyone else.
Buddy Rich could play massive skins Mick Avery/ Bob Henrit of the KINKS any drummer that can play while the 2 brothers are fighting on stage and not miss a beat is damn good. Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys (when clean and sober) was highly underrated Alex Van Halen would be a big standout but lived in Eddie's shadow. and Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen, one armed wonder. VH1 made a great movie out of that story also.

I don't see how so many of the people on this thread are voting Ringo Starr as one of the most talented drummers, he wasn't that good, in my opinion, I'm not saying that because I detest the Beatles, lol, I'm saying that because he isn't really that talented. Can someone explain to me why everyone thinks he is? Other than the fact the Beatles are so popular with a lot of people?

wow, all these posts and no one has mentioned Phil Collins. I know, he's a loser adult-contemporary guy who does Disney soundtracks now but there was a time in mid-seventies when he could blow away most of the drummers out there. yes, Neal Peart is amazing, but there is no emotion to his playing. Danny Carrey is another great drummer, i agree.
but ultimately i go with Phil, because he's left handed, plays a backwards kit, and could play a drum solo in 9/8 that still sounded like it had some swing to it. don't laugh cos i like Genesis . . . .

Neil Peart.
John Bonham. Everyone else is debatable. No, just kidding. There are a lot of great drummers out there. Tim "Herb" Alexander is fabulous; so are Mike Portnoy, Dave Abbruzzese, and...what is wrong with me that I can't think of his name, the guy from Tower of Power. And of course, Ringo Starr, because sometimes it's all about NOT standing out. I still remember when Jeff Porcaro died. I was sad.

I have to second Omar12 here.
I think Mike Portnoy is insaaaane.. but ,my favorite drummer is ?uestlove, from the roots...that hip hop drumming is what I like best to play, and he has so much style... its amazing to hear him play. Big ups to all the people from The Roots, cuz they are "the ultimate, rock-rockin it, rock-rockin it, rockin it..." |
