1.) John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
Quality band all around and DAMN what a drummer, especially when he goes off on a tangent with those solos.
2.) Stewart Copeland (The Police)
Flexible and talented, respect is due
3.) Larry Mullen Jr.
Skill out the wazoo but rarely recognized for it, and hell, he started U2 so I owe him a spot on the list

pedro padilla 09-09-2004 10:29 PM

sitting here listening to physical graffitti. put me on the bonham list. way more than power. man had subtlety. put some on right now.

Mr_Wall 09-09-2004 11:48 PM

Dave Grohl No worries

cub4life78 09-13-2004 01:02 PM

Vinnie Paul of Pantera

nomis 09-15-2004 07:29 PM

Flo Mounier from Canadian death metallers Cryptopsy, if you're into P2P, download the drum solo from the live cd, the guy is the fastest drummer I've ever seen in action, and watching him do the drum solo is so much better than just hearing it, it's crazy. Martin Lopez of Opeth also is a fav. because of his amazing south american inspired style, but doing death metal, it's fuckin awesome.

Paradise Lost 09-15-2004 07:40 PM

Neal Peart, listed here for the 86th consecutive time!

jumprun 09-15-2004 07:49 PM

I'm no drumming expert, but no one has mentioned Buddy Rich. I thought that guy was a drumming god

tspikes51 09-15-2004 09:18 PM

Steve Gadd, who is also drumming for Clapton; the guy from System of A Down, and Max Weinberg (best show drummer). There was this guy that my friend was listening to who was keeping 3 separate times with different limbs. I'll get his name for you.

thesupermikey 09-15-2004 09:30 PM

Stewart Copeland
Buddy Rich
Stanton Moore

Ace_O_Spades 09-15-2004 10:33 PM

I gotta mention Portnoy again... simply because I downloaded a few of his videos and they are.... amazing

http://upload.cybermart.ca/092003/portnoy.JPG

this is one of the low res ones, i'm too lazy to go through the process of screen capping the dvds

NastyNate 09-15-2004 11:23 PM

Alex Gonzalez of Mana.

moonchild 09-17-2004 03:30 AM

Nico McBrain of Iron Maiden for me is one of the most talented drummer. For he has got so much of talent and have u seen his drum store sorry drum kit it covers him so fully that u can hardly see him in the show ... very very tallented and his sense of timing is so amazing ... he holds the band so very well ...

yes yes yes...

i add alan white ('yes' in the 70s)
and ringo starr ('beatles' in the 60s)
and dave mattacks (fairport convention and 100 other session groups in 60s and 70s)
for pure enjoyable 'drumming solidity'...

Carter Beauford (DMB)
Danny Carey (Tool)
Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam/Formerly Soundgarden)
Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
Chris Layton (SRV & Double Trouble)
Jon Wysocki (Staind)

thespian86 09-19-2004 10:54 AM

Travis Barker of Aquabats/Blink 182/Box Car Racer/Transplants

Maybe not the fastest but by far the most orignal.

For anyone who cares, his name is Marco Minneman. He has a lot of videos out, and goes on solo tours quite a bit.

2sheds 09-26-2004 07:41 PM

neal peart = god

prufrock0734 09-27-2004 06:52 PM

heard a funny quip about Ringo, since a lot of you were talking about him. Someone once asked Paul McCartney if Ringo Starr was the greatest drummer in the world. Paul shrugged and said, "Ringo Starr wasn't even the beast drummer in the Beatles."

Don't get me wrong, the Beatles are the earth's greatest rock band, but Ringo wasn't all that hot as a drummer.

Kudos to the guy who brought up Phil Collins. The man is a truly amazing drummer!

Raleighbum 09-28-2004 06:41 AM

unkle_escobar 09-28-2004 02:22 PM

Best Drummer? I cant name just 1, but Peart, Moon and Baker are my top 3.

Most underrated drummer is a toss up between Charlie Watts and Mitch Mitchell. Watts can literally keep perfect time, he IS the human metranome. And Mitchell was always in Jimi's shadow, listen to The Experience live at the monteray pop festival, Mitchell has some amazing fills during "Like a rolling stone", super, super fast stuff.

raoul_duke 09-28-2004 03:31 PM

Dave Grohl kicks ass! Any post 1990 Nirvana drumming always sounded above par, and his work with QOTSA and his own Probot project are top notch. Dale Crover of the Melvins is good too. Also, you can't forget the drummers from those kickass old bands. Nick Mason and John Bonham come to mind.

gibingus 10-04-2004 12:59 PM

finally someone mentions Mitch Mitchell, thanks Shizukana. that took way too long.

keith moon changed my life. saw the kids are allright when i was 8 and knew exactly what i had to do.

in jazz, max roach my pick. all props to krupa and buddy, but chick webb deserves the real credit for laying the groundwork.

i'm also a big fan of billy martin from martin, medeski and wood.

toxic515 10-04-2004 04:13 PM

Roach, you missed one of my favorites, Ed Shaughnessy, most known for his time with the Tonight Show Band, back in the day.... one of the truest greats...

People seem to have overlooked Latina sensation Sheila E. of "Prince" fame.

and yes, Neil Pert rocks! His innovation, along with Geddy Lee, in bringing "odd" time meters to Rock music leaves others often in the dust.

Lest you all think I am too old, let's not forget Cindy Blackman, She's performed with a list of Jazz, Funk and Rock greats long as your arm, recently Lenny Kravitz...

Lastly, and by no means least, is Allan White, from "YES"

Hope that gives some of you skins lovers a few names to look into more! for me, well, I'm a guitarist... <grin> I'll go back to teaching the bass player his part. (Kidding, c'mon)

toxic515 10-04-2004 04:27 PM

Hey gibinus, I didn't read the last page, I find it amusing because I am currently listening to the Shack Man CD.... Props to you AND him!

Draconis 10-04-2004 09:57 PM

neal pert = teh suck
jimmy stewart was in fact the best drummer ever. it is a little known fact that he picked up drumming from the four dimensional being Harvey the Giant Rabbit, who was actually mistaken as imaginary, during the filming of the movie 'Harvey'. Harvey trained under Moses and Grakor the Destroyer, the latter of 'Impaled Northern Moon Forest' fame, and passed down the mythical tom-roll of hatred, death, bunnies, and sunflower seeds to jimmy stewart. Once he learned this, jimmy stewart was unstoppable and began his ethnic cleansing. first to be ravaged by his confused and misguided ethnic hatred were the mole people of moleopolis, followed by the rat people of ratopolis and the cat people of Chicago. only by the grace of god and a half eaten twinkie were captain obvious and his sidekick colonel cleavland steamer able to stop the now half-man, half-robot movie star bent on becoming the next fuhrer. it is a shame. he would have made a great madman drum-based malevolent dictator.

omega2K4 10-04-2004 10:48 PM

1.) Danny Carey of Tool
2.) Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater

JohnnyRock 10-05-2004 06:13 AM

I gotta go with [in no order]:
John Bonham, Lars Ulrich, Tommy Lee and Mick Fleetwood.

Dark Assailant 10-05-2004 06:32 AM

A drummer that I find creative is Bobby from Orgy.
He is talented... not the most though

Neptune 10-06-2004 03:10 AM

Rob Hirst from Midnight Oil.

alansmithee 10-07-2004 04:02 AM

?uestlove from The Roots would get my vote from current (last 15-20 years) drummers.

mdrop 10-07-2004 04:20 AM

Danny Carey - Tool
Neil Peart - Rush
Carl Palmer - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

And then an obscure drummer most of you have probably never heard of:
Sami Kuoppamäki. He played in a Finnish legendary acid/proge band called Kingston Wall and has continued his career as one of the top percussionist in the finnish rock scene since then.

gozlanfrog 10-08-2004 03:09 AM

Peart. Technique, speed, precision. I can't think of anyone who can top that.

Moon and Bonham. Both lots of energy and power.

When discussing Peart, many bring up YYZ, but my favorite drum track by him is 2112. He has one section that sounds faster than a machine gun, it's just insane. This makes me wnat to que up Winamp and load 2112 intro, Four Sticks, and Won't get Fooled Again.

Finally, I'd like to mention a couple of bands on the opposite ends fo the spectrum - Nine Inch Nails and the Allman Brothers. Using two drummers at many times was a stroke of genius. I'm sure that other bands have done this on occasion, but they are the most visible to me. When you get a song where two percussionists are in sync and on their game, the precision sound is as sweet and delicate as any other.

espi 10-08-2004 01:34 PM

Since all the drummers I can think of have already been mentioned, I really have nothing of value to add to this discussion, but I thought I'd throw in this quote from Freaks and Geeks:

Quote:

Harold Weir: By the way, that drummer you're listening to...
Nick: Yeah?
Harold: He's terrible!
Nick: What? That's Neil Peart, he's the greatest drummer alive!
Harold: Neal Pert couldn't drum his way out of a paper bag!
Harold then goes on to introduce Nick to Max Roach and Buddy Rich, who of course he's totally impressed by.

BuddyHawks 10-08-2004 04:34 PM

Ginger Baker of Cream gets my vote.

runtuff 10-08-2004 04:37 PM

Isn't there a rule that the greatest drummers have to be dead? Bonham, Moon come to mind for a start.

go-bots 10-08-2004 08:49 PM

neil peart(rush), buddy rich(jazz drummer),alan white(yes)

FlatLand Flyer 10-10-2004 09:26 PM

Vinnie Paul - Pantera, Damgeplan
Danny Carrey - Tool
Joey Jordison - Slipknot
Mike Protnoy - Dream Theater
Cavallera - Sepultura )always forget his first name. He is Max's brother)

high_jinx 10-10-2004 10:34 PM

can't take anything away from the classics, but i think zack young from the band artificial intelligence is the drummer of the future. he plays a cybernetic mix of live acoustic drums and trickers from 1 mixed kit. i've seen it live and its amazing. he's playing drum n' bass and jungle alongside a band. and his sense of timing is so good he's almost doing chord changes w/ the drums imo.
