Masked Rider is a different book of his which, I believe, was written before his wife's death (and possibly before his daughter's death).

Whoops, my bad. Now I have to go to the bookstore.

grumpyolddude 07-20-2004 07:54 PM

Gene Krupa is the godfather of drummers!
Keith Moon taught 'em all how to rock!
Ringo Starr was the school of cool!

Everybody else stands on their shoulders, eats at their table, owes them everything!

trickyy 07-20-2004 09:43 PM

duh duh duh danny carey again

freeload 07-23-2004 01:38 PM

Vinnie Colaiuta is high on my list.
Simon Phillips, Dave Weckl and Mike Portney are all great drummers too... but Vinnie is my favourite (besides me ofcourse) - Everybody should have a copy of Sting's "Ten Summoner's Tales" - Fantastic!

NeverBorn 07-23-2004 08:58 PM

Buddie Rich man, ever heard the drum battle between him and Roach? Fucking brilliant

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion and that's fine. Canada's sweethearts live an hours drive away, that being the Tragically Hip, and I honestly can't name a worse band.

With Bonham though, people misjudged his talent for raw verocity and as a result was labelled a heavy drummer which he was, but also missed the musicianship in the fray. If you listen closely enough you will not only hear different motifs in each fill but also a texture that was personalized and distinct in each beat he played. As a pro musician, these understated rhythms and textures are clear as day, and I smile at greatness much like I do all competant musicians from all genres of music and thank my lucky stars.

braindamage351 07-23-2004 09:44 PM

I really do like Bonham a lot. He comes up with the coolest drum beats.

Oh, and I've heard that Neil Peart writes most of Rush's music. Is that true?

wrestlerdiva 07-24-2004 08:39 PM

to add some new blood
joey jordison from slipknot
mick fleetwood from fleetwood mac
tommy lee from motley crue

Omar12 07-24-2004 10:32 PM

Portnoy hands down. He is a great drummer and great musician.

Another one that I like is ?uestlove from The Roots.

saut 07-24-2004 11:06 PM

Still stickin with Danny, but Mick Portnoy defintily deserves some more lovin' in this thread.

pan6467 07-25-2004 01:47 AM

Keith Moon above and beyond anyone else.

Buddy Rich could play massive skins

Mick Avery/ Bob Henrit of the KINKS any drummer that can play while the 2 brothers are fighting on stage and not miss a beat is damn good.

Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys (when clean and sober) was highly underrated

Alex Van Halen would be a big standout but lived in Eddie's shadow.

and Def Leppard's drummer Rick Allen, one armed wonder. VH1 made a great movie out of that story also.

jhk451 07-25-2004 10:59 AM

i second terry bozzio. absolutely sick drummer. can make melodies with his insane kit.

http://drummerworld.com/Videos/TerryBozzio.html

castex 07-26-2004 03:20 AM

Lombardo, yes. Will Calhoun, certainly. Peart, Bozzio, for sure.
Bonham was just fab.
Copeland has such taste, but he holds his stick wrong.
The best, bar none, is Mark Brezezicki, formerly with Big Country.

Coronaboy72 07-26-2004 05:29 AM

Neal Peart - Rush
Rick Allen - Def Leppard
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Ringo Starr - The Beatles

castex 07-26-2004 09:59 AM

Are you sure about that last one, coronaboy?

jals 07-27-2004 04:22 AM

Most talented today? Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney, obviously.

Of all time. I quite like a certain Who drummer.

Pardon my ignorance but...who is that? :D

clementine 08-03-2004 07:00 PM

stanton moore - galactic

really, he's quite amazing

canucklehead 08-03-2004 11:08 PM

Neal Peart - Rush
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Nick Mason - Pink Floyd

DownwardSpiral 08-04-2004 01:12 AM

I don't see how so many of the people on this thread are voting Ringo Starr as one of the most talented drummers, he wasn't that good, in my opinion, I'm not saying that because I detest the Beatles, lol, I'm saying that because he isn't really that talented. Can someone explain to me why everyone thinks he is? Other than the fact the Beatles are so popular with a lot of people?

Probably because most of it is electronic. Watch him, he hits drum once, entire drum riff..... Pretty funny!

jbuffett 08-04-2004 03:08 PM

Neil Peart Rawks!!!!!!!

north 08-04-2004 08:12 PM

wow, all these posts and no one has mentioned Phil Collins. I know, he's a loser adult-contemporary guy who does Disney soundtracks now but there was a time in mid-seventies when he could blow away most of the drummers out there. yes, Neal Peart is amazing, but there is no emotion to his playing. Danny Carrey is another great drummer, i agree.

but ultimately i go with Phil, because he's left handed, plays a backwards kit, and could play a drum solo in 9/8 that still sounded like it had some swing to it.

don't laugh cos i like Genesis . . . .

Cedar 08-04-2004 09:27 PM

Neil Peart.

John Bonham.

Everyone else is debatable.

No, just kidding. There are a lot of great drummers out there. Tim "Herb" Alexander is fabulous; so are Mike Portnoy, Dave Abbruzzese, and...what is wrong with me that I can't think of his name, the guy from Tower of Power. And of course, Ringo Starr, because sometimes it's all about NOT standing out.

I still remember when Jeff Porcaro died. I was sad.

pedro padilla 08-30-2004 09:34 PM

mike bordin from faith no more, ozzy and black sabbath is pretty bad ass. I saw Dave Lombardo (slayer) play with the fantomas recently. That dudes on a whole different level.

Zephyr66 08-30-2004 11:28 PM

Jaska Raatikainen(Children of Bodom) is pretty awesome
Carmine Appice is pretty good, I guess i just say that cause i learned from his book, so i was exposed to him a lot when i started drumming

Are you thinking of David Garibaldi?

ToiletDuck 08-31-2004 10:50 AM

Ill put my vote in for Travis Barker. To me he's one skinny guy who has a heavy beat.

saut 08-31-2004 11:06 AM

I need to say Danny Carey one more time because he is so fucking good. Go listen to The Grudge right now, and bear in mind that what you hear is done on a live kit.

rockford1004 08-31-2004 11:19 AM

Wow, I'm surprised Buddy Rich wasn't mentioned more,he practically invented the drum solo, I have to agree with Neil Peart, S Copeland, Steve Gadd, these guys are masters on the kit.

rockford1004 08-31-2004 11:31 AM

For straight ahead great rock drummers, Mick Fleetwood, Stan Lynch, Terry Bozzio, Ginger Baker, Alex Van Halen, there are so many great ones.

Zephyr66 08-31-2004 04:58 PM

oh yeah, add buddy rich to my list with carmine appice, learned a lot from his videos too

ditalianishere 08-31-2004 10:13 PM

Carter from DMB. Word.

how is this possible?

a small list of who i can remember while drinking coffee, in no order, and quite sure that there are other dummers out there i either cannot remember and/or have not heard yet who should be here:

elvin jones
eddie blackwell
andrew cyrille
don moye
jerome cooper
max roach
rashied ali
sunny murray
william hooker (check out his duet release with thurston moore)

chris cutler

and tony allen, who was the drumming (and musical) backbone for most early fela anikulapo kuti tracks--through the early 1980s---and is just a monster....

Ahhhh! are you serious?!?? you just mentioned a heap of jazz drummers...and the names Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich did not appear in the list.... get a hold of their drum battles. they are a-mazing.

biznatch 09-06-2004 05:28 PM

I have to second Omar12 here.
I think Mike Portnoy is insaaaane..
but ,my favorite drummer is ?uestlove, from the roots...that hip hop drumming is what I like best to play, and he has so much style... its amazing to hear him play. Big ups to all the people from The Roots, cuz they are "the ultimate, rock-rockin it, rock-rockin it, rockin it..."

thriolith 09-06-2004 07:21 PM

John Bonham, Neil Peart, Charlie Watts, Keith Moon...

divagrrrl 09-06-2004 09:08 PM

big Stewart Copeland fan here....
