Help a poor isolated music starved college student out
First off, I go to school at Mississippi State and it's the middle of po-dunk nowhere and the only exposure I have to any kind of music is MTVU and the local college radio station, both of which suck donkey nuts. I've only been able to get into mainstream bands and I wanted to expand into some more obscure music.
The bands I like are Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Slick Shoes, Dashboard Confessional, Breaking Benjamin, Coheed and Cambria, Finch, Chevelle...I could go on but I think you have a good idea. So can someone help me out and suggest some indy/obscure stuff I might like? I'd really appreciate it.

Judging by those bands, all of whom I like as well I will recommend others. I'm not sure what you call mainstream and underground because these bands are well known in the whole punk-rock genre but most aren't in the "MTV" or radio sense.
Thrice My Chemical Romance Motion City Soundtrack The Spill Canvas Midtown Less Than Jake Matchbook Romance Fall Out Boy Alkaline Trio Halifax AFI Underoath Straylight Run - Soft, old members of TBS. Rufio - Perhaps, I suppose album The Postal Service Northstar haha that should keep you busy. No particular order.

Park - I'm sure you will love these guys. They're amazing.
Some others would be: Armor For Sleep Letter Kills Saosin (recently broke up i believe, only put out one EP, but still good) Brazil The Mars Volta At The Drive In Atreyu Emery Midtown's "Forget What You Know" Album Funeral For A Friend Sparta Name Taken Saves The Day My Chemical Romance has already been suggested, but their new CD is so good it's worth mentioning twice. Straylight Run The Chiodos Brothers Desaparacidos Gatsby's American Dream Time To Fly Elliot As Tall As Lions These should also keep you busy. |

I know none of the groups you mentioned, but I love the site:
http://www.musicplasma.com/ Enter a band name, and it will somehow figure out what's very closely related, and what is more distant. Very accurate based on the groups I know, and I put in some obscure stuff.
