Best guitar solo

What is the best guitar solo out there? I mean, there are some really fast typical ones that would take a good guitar player to play but what about the really good ones, the ones that fit the song and are totaly original.

I guess I would have to vote for the solo in the song "Reptilia" by The Strokes. The solo isn't the most complicated but it is difficult with all the hammer ons. It is original and man does it fit the song.

Whats your vote for the best guitar solo... please try not to give the typical answer.

"Come On Feel The Noize" - Quiet Riot

"Still Loving You" - The Scorpions

Quiet Riot is pretty kick ass and fast but The Scorpions is really original.

Most definitely.

"Beat It" - Michael Jackson
"Momma I'm Comin' Home" - Ozzy Osbourne
"Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd
"Tender Surrender" - Steve Vai
"Paradise City" - Guns 'N Roses
"Under a Glass Moon" - Dream Theater

redarrow 06-25-2004 09:54 PM

Well, Iron Maiden's - Number of the Beast has a fast solo but it kinda fits the fastness of the song. Listen to it.

Mantus 06-25-2004 11:19 PM

Pretty much anything by Joe Satriani - most of his song are just 5 minute long solos and he is a master at his art.

ultra_agent9 06-26-2004 03:57 AM

I don't really have a best as there are too many that I like.

But here's one that will throw you off track: My Sharona by The Knack. I know I know, a one hit wonder and all, but you have to admit it's a pretty well done rock song. And the guitar solo really gets the song going and kicks it up a notch or three.

It's definitely not the best but it's a good one.

illinoiz 06-26-2004 10:36 PM

The solo in "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears For Fears is one of the coolest solos ever.

perripken 06-26-2004 11:02 PM

Best lead solo eh? There are so many that I'm gonna have to chime in more than once. Off the top of my head, the first one that comes to mind- and anyone who knows me from the trivia thread will know that it has to be Styx. And the greatest solo song I know by them is "Queen of spades"

Sun Tzu 06-26-2004 11:40 PM

I know your looking for one; but anything off of Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn" album is great.

If you've never heard of him; you may be a little shocked to see his condition now. He was striken with a disease that rendered him totally paralized; and supported with a trach for breathing. He cant play guitar anymore; but he still composes music with software that uses the movement of his eyes. The music he was able to play speaks for itself.

That, or (spits out the cliche) Stairway to Heaven. I love that solo.

pan6467 06-27-2004 01:30 PM

The TOP GUN instrumental theme by Steve Stephens, that just freackin rocks.

George W Bush 06-27-2004 07:28 PM

The end solo Ralph Machio airs in the movie Crossroads.

Ofcourse this background music is kickin too wherever its coming from. Who is it?

KWSN 06-27-2004 07:40 PM

Metallica - One

A bit cliched perhaps but all of Van Halen's Eruption

I think just about anything Les Claypool plays on the bass could be played on the guitar and be considered amazing. That guy is superhuman.

TSFM 06-27-2004 10:34 PM

Hands down the best ever by the best guitarist ever, Terry Kath:

"25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago

Unfortunately not the best at holding a gun in his hand, though!
Doh!

Steve Vai does the Ralph Machio final solo of that movie, and the whole 'concert' type thing at the end is Steve Vai and Ry Cooder (the slide playing).

Comfortably Numb by 43 lengths

r3ptile 06-28-2004 02:12 PM

i dunno about an all-time favorite solo.... but as far as new solos i've heard fairly recently, i'd definitely have to choose:

"what you are," by audioslave.

tom morello just fuckin' rules when it comes to unconventional guitar playing.

snoop 06-28-2004 04:27 PM

Steve VAI . . . . pick a song, any song

The duel from Crossroads was sweet. So Ive gotta agree with snoop.... ANYTHING by Steve Vai. The guy can play anything, at any speed and still have feel. Thats the one thing that I think a lot of fast players have lost. There are no cojones behind any of it.

Along with that, I've got to add the solo to the David Lee Roth song "Goin' Crazy," not coincidently played by Steve Vai. It's one of my all time favorite solos.

jobu 06-30-2004 08:54 AM

there are so many out there but i like the solo in Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits

Thats why I am such a fan of SRV. Plenty of guys could play faster, but I havent ever heard someone put so much feeling into a guitar piece.

And yeah, the Crossroads deal was incredible.

Truth. I love Joe Satriani, also check out Victor Wooten. He's bad ass.

dcbullet 07-05-2004 06:44 PM

I'll put out Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood solo from the Live at the El Macambo video.

Holy crap! I was going to say this but thought I would read the thread first. I can't believe with all the choices out there and only 35 posts, 2 people would say "Sultans of Swing".

student 07-07-2004 07:05 PM

have you guys ever heard the early vh stuff? fair warning vh I and vh II. i think eddie is the most inovative player ever i could cite all of the notable solos and riffs but just get those 3 cds and listen all the way through. they are filled with great solos and weird controlled and repeatable(by eddie) noises.

Anxst 07-08-2004 04:53 AM

I always loved the big varied solo Page does in White Summer that makes up the majority of the song. It's all variations off that same theme, like jazz and rock met at a bar and got drunk and went home together that night.

I know there are better ones out there, but that's always been my favorite, and I've heard lots of live versions, and he never played it exactly the same twice.

InTeGrA77 07-08-2004 10:55 PM

Most underrated guitarist/all around artist....=Prince! I mean, just listen to the man play the guitar in ANY of his songs (Purple Rain, for example, only because almost everyone's heard of it)...its positively amazing...:D

...plus I just FINALLY saw him in concert for the first time, and I must say that the mans' a genius live!

Trouts 07-10-2004 11:04 PM

Dream Theater: Once In A Livetime

John Petrucci's 'Flight of the Bumblebee' on Disc 2.

Flight of the Bumblebee on electric guitar. Can't top it.

mattevil 07-11-2004 09:31 AM

asudevil83 07-11-2004 11:35 AM

led zeppelin - since i've been loving you

Coronaboy72 07-11-2004 09:57 PM

Stevie Ray Vaughan - "The Sky Is Crying"

A close second is "All Along The Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix

Bodyhammer86 07-12-2004 07:59 AM

any songs by pantera, plus shadows fall, nightrage, in flames, soilwork, and opeth. and let's not forget zakk wylde's black label society

supafly 07-15-2004 12:06 PM

Nightwish - Wanderlust,

This is serious gothic metal.

Chilly McFreeze 07-15-2004 12:27 PM

Any one of the three in All Along The Watchtower. No, in fact ALL THREE of them in AATW. They fit the song great, Hendrix really made that song his own.
