The Beastie Boys and Copy Protection

A couple of articles are reporting that the Beastie's new album is loaded with spyware and/or virii.

http://bigpicture.typepad.com/commen...talls_vir.html
Quote:
Here's a different spin on the "DRM" story: The Register discusses a very different approach taken in the new Beastie Boys CD (as compared to the Velvet Revolver DRM). When the disc is inserted into a PC, the disc, "To The 5 Boroughs" surreptitiously installs a virus to prevent ripping the disc to MP3s.

This is an unauthorized hack -- an "executable file is automatically and silently installed on the user's machine when the CD is loaded," According to a recent thread at BugTraq.

No permissions, no disclosures, no authorization. It meets all the definitions of a virus.

I will never buy another major label CD.

It is Ironic that Beastie Boys have become a tool of the man they once fought against.

It's called protecting your investment. It's no different than installing locks on the doors of the bank.

I love how everyone is like "Fucking RIAA and their bullshit!" when really they are just trying to get you to not steal from them. So you can't copy the CD or rip mp3's. So what? You already have the CD, so what more do you need? Right, so this one CD you can't put on your iPod. Boo hoo.

Title 17, Chapter 1, Sec. 107.

And

RIAA v. Diamond Multimedia, 180 F. 3d. 1072, 1079, 9th Circ. 1999.

Fair-Use Rights.

Google them.

These new copy protection methods suck. They make people who actually own the CD have trouble playing it on their PC, Playstation or X-box and downloading it to their i-pod. While any one who has even the most rudimentary knowledge of ripping music is still able to do it with hardly any effort.

Huray for corporate bullshit.

So they say, but we know that people are actually pissed because they can't get free copies of the CD from their friends. Let's not pretend that this isn't what it's about.

from the Band's explanation page linked above
Quote:
....The technology does activate a proprietary Macrovision player in order to play the CD on a PC, and that player converts WMA compressed files to audio on the fly.
But how do these play if the user has ripped out all traces of Windows Media Player and has no desire to see (much less play) that codec on their system?

You can burn\rip this CD with no problem. I haven't heard of anyone who's been unable to.

You know all you have to do to beat these copy protections is hold the shift key when you insert the CD. Pathetic really.

Not really. If their friend want to hear a song all they have to do is do a serch in a P2P program. Lets see just did a serch...82 hits for "Ch-Check It Out" at 256 kbps and a total of 2506 hits at 192 kbps so obviously this isnt stopping any one from ripping the music.

What these ploys are hindering is the consumers ability to play their store bought CD's on equipment other then a standard stereo system.

Obviously the issue at hand is the fact that people are sharing their music but what I am critisizing is the way the music industry is dealing with this issue.

not going to personally anytime in this century. This album places very very low on my list of 'must buy' music down with Britney Spears or Pink Floyd.
Most of the music I buy/transfer is from vinyls.

huge jazz/swing fan, classical music, Bing Crosby,Nat Cole, ragtime, actual country, some of the new 'pop country', metallica, Natalie Merchant, basically something from every genre. Or to put it simply 1860-1960, 1980-present with limitations.
---
I despise New Kids on the Block and their numerous clones, Britney, etc.
---
almost complete disinterest for The non-jazz records of the 60's/70's and The Who, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, and similar groups.* And I can not compare Pink Floyd to Britney as I am mostly ignorant about them and can name or identify just one song they sing without help; what I have heard fails to grab my interest at all aside from the 'we don't need no education' song.

*having said that, the 1969 King Crimson LP that is the source of my avatar is quite interesting to hear when the proper mood strikes me

and to actually wander back ontopic, I do like some of the Beastie Boys songs, but have only heard the radio/MTV play songs.
