the doors
what do you think?
|
i think they would have been great, but not the greatest. they did have a lot going for them though, except for that whole alcoholic thing.
|
Okay, this is a toughie; I was in my late teens/early20's when the Doors were popular- I hated 'em; fast-forward 20 years, everytime I heard "Light my fire" it was like the theme song for the '60's (in the best possible sense) Jim Morrison was a self-destructive genius, a card carrying nut case that was headed down the road to oblivion quite a while before the Doors ever existed; but the son of a bitch sure could write lyrics. I THINK at this point, the Doors are assured of a page in the "Big Book of Rock'n'Roll", but who the hell knows; I've heard for years Morrison is alive and living in Tunisea, maybe they'll all get together for a reunion.
BTW: I used to have a vinyl bootleg made in Italy that had two cuts with Jimi Hendrix playing and Morrison doing vocals; if you ever see "F.H.I.T.A." or "Look down on my Woman" on a file-sharing site, they're legit, D/L 'em. |
I have to go with degrawj.
The Doors are a great group, with or without Jim Morrison dying, but they never would rate as the greatest group, IMO. That honor would go to the Beatles or Stones. |

BTW: Beatles, maybe; Stones, NO FUCKIN' WAY!! |
Even though the doors recorded some of my favorites, I certainly wouldn 't consider them the greatest. I like alot of their songs, but not all of them. I have to agree with Lebell, you have to look at the Beatles, who to everyone is a household name. My personal favorite Doors tune was definately "Peace Frog" (maybe and idea for a new thread? hmmmm...)
|
The problem with a thread like this is that you don't have a valid comparison; it's really difficult to judge the music of the Doors without the controversy that Morrison caused. I could never call the Doors the greatest R&R band- they're just not; they may not even be a significant R&R band; compitent, yes, great, maybe the best, NO!
My vote for the most IMPORTANT Rock & Roll entity (band or individual) would have to be a tie between Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly; it's been said that if Buddy Holly had lived, the Beatles would never have made the splash they did; I believe that, Buddy was just getting started when he ied. |
the doors were at their best when they did these epic performance pieces like The Soft Parace, Celebration Of The Lizard, The End, and When The Music's Over. jim brought poetry and philosophy to rock & roll.
|
The doors are good but not even close to the greatest band ever. Good stoner music though.
|
I like the Doors a great deal. Jim was a fine lyricist, and all the other fellow in the group were (and remain) fine musicians, however, they are not the greatest, though they belong in any top hundred list, probably in the top 10 or 20.
If we're just talking rock and roll, Stones over Beatles. If pop music counts, Beatles over Stones. IMHO, King Crimson over either of them, but I'm odd that way, |
The Doors were great enough to stand the test of time. Their music holds up today in many ways better than when it was recorded. Much of how the Doors are preceived is based on Morrison's mystique. Had he not been on a collision course with self demolition the Doors woudn't have been what they were. Hence, had he lived the Doors wouldn't be what we think they could have been, if any of that makes sense......
|
I'm a huge Doors fan but Jim was an asshole!
musically they are brilliant musicians and song writers. Still can't get American Prayer out of my car stereo. Its awesome!! |
well i'll be seeing them May 23rd:D
|
the doors, although i really liked them, only really gained the status they have now through jim morrisons death. if he had lived, they would have about the same status as the monkeys and peter, paul, & mary do now - respected, but not revered by any means.
|
it's really interesting that the musical lineup of the ddoors never sounds dated, just drums, guitar and keyboards. technology introduced in the 70s and 80s sounds dated after awhile, like the cheesy 80s synths. but the basic band lineup will live forever. that's rock & roll!
|
The Doors were a great band, and there music still holds up...but I don't think they would have ever been the greatest...anyways, Morrison had to destroy himself. If he hadn't had that self-destructive urge, the music would not have been the same, IMO.

King Crimson? No way man. He's got some good shit, but over the BEATLES??? |
the doors are the greatest rock/ blues band ever, led zeppelin would be the greatest rock and roll band though
|
saw them last night, and let me tell you, they kicked ass, their lead singer looked and sounded like Jim, it was awesome!
|
The Doors rock and they were good but I wouldn't label them as the best even if Morrison had stayed with the living. We already have the best and the name is Led Zeppelin. :D
