Right sentiment, Wrong tense. Lynyrd Skynyrd RockED. Then they died in a plane crash. (Yes, I know, some survived, and they still gimp about the country playing, but the heyday is over and the alligators have full bellies.)

And, while Freebird may be The Southern Rock Jam Anthem, it is nowhere near their best song. "Curtis Lowe" or "Gimme Back My Bullets" prob'ly owns that distinction.
