Aussie artists in the spotlight
What I will attempt to do here is highlight an Australian band or artist to share some of our great music around.
To start things off with one of my favourite singer/songwriters who has a great ability to sing about love lost,love found and relationships in general. Dang, Kuepper has been around for a long time. His material is pretty well recieved by music listeners too. Its a shame I never heard of him until now. Thanks cchris ;) I may have to go find one of his cd's now. :D

Whilst the website aint much chop,the same cannot be said for Machine Gun Fellatio.

I'll agree with Machine Gun Fellatio. Their song "Dirty Fucking Whore" makes me crack up every time I hear it.
Lately though, I've been getting into some less mainstream Aussie groups. Two are: http://www.xavierrudd.com/ -- Xavier Rudd. Plays guitar, digeridoo, drums, and more. Pretty good. Has done a tour in US + Canada I think, but not that well known yet. http://www.rambunctious.com.au/ -- Rambunctious. A friend of mine got me into them, and I love them. Kind of Jack Johnson like, to give you an idea of their music. Heavily on my playlist at the moment. I will add more later (I'm thinking tism, Sonic Animation). |

Some more for you (the ones I mentioned before). I don't know if I'd call these guys mainstream. They are played on the radio every now and then, but I doubt anyone out of Oz would know them. Anyways, on with the groups.
tism (stands for This Is Serious Mum). No one is quite sure who these guys are, as they're always in bellaclavas (sp?). For the Americans (and anyone else) Bellaclavas = Ski Masks. Like those ones robbers always wear in bad movies. Anyways, their music generally has a (sometimes very cynical) point to it, while at the same time being funny. Their most popular song is "Greg! The Stop Sign!". They recently came out with a "best of" album, which gives you a pretty good collection of their most well known works throughout the years. http://www.tism.com.au -- tism. Sonic Animation. These guys are techno and may be known by other people for their recent song "I'm a DJ". For Triple J listeners, they were on one of the Hottest 100s for their song "Theophilus Thistler (An Exercise in Vowels)". I highly recommend listening to that song or at least reading the lyrics and thinking about how much of a mouthful it is to sing/rap. Anyways, on with the website. http://www.sonicanimation.com.au/ - Sonic Animation. Just one more that I don't know too much about. A friend of mine introduced me to the music of The GO Set. While they haven't hit big yet, I think they have the potential. One of their main instruments is a set of bagpipes, which is pretty cool. killswitch engage! one of the only bands i've been introduced to this year and been truly impressed. here's an excerpt from allmusic.com about them that is pretty damn accurate and eloquent, IMO:
"This is a pure metal album that seemingly has ignored any fashionable trend and instead relies solely on skill and expertise to sculpt some of meatiest heavy metal since the glory days of Metallica and Slayer. Injected into these chaotic hardcore/death metal hybrid songs is an undeniable sense of melody that flawlessly enhances every track, and instead of turning Killswitch Engage's permanent heavy sound weaker, this melodic accompaniment only goes to make you realize how intense and exhilarating the band is when they explode in an inferno of enraged brutality. " their songs that i've come across are free of guitar solos (unfortunately, i suppose) but the guitars are hardly one dimensional like most new metal i've come across. there's acoustic arrangements, heavy rhythmic stuff, melodic heavy stuff, the gamut (sp?). anyway, check them out! anyone else excited over a new band? |

i just got this album (Blueprints for the Black Market) and i love it it's not metal, they are more emo-rock i guess. if you like Further Seems Forever and the Juliana Theory you will like Anberlin. interview with the lead singer, Stephen Christian p.s. i'm not a big emo fan at all but i still love the album, so don't hesitate too much if you think most emo sucks. |
yeah, killswitch engage is a fucking great band. Liberty (hardcore punk) is a great band, and so is deroot (metal) out of orlando.

Maroon5 Grinspoon Cyclefly Boy Hits Car The Guano Apes Those are a few off the top of my head. Some of those bands are fairly well known outside of the US, but not too big in The States. |
What about Aussie bands like:
'Jet' 'the casanovas' 'motor ace' 'eskimo joe' '78 saab' 'the sleepy jackson' and the great 'you am i' I think 'you am i' have been in the shadow of powder finger as the premier aussie indie band for to long. Dont get me wrong powder finger are a top band, and perhaps more commercial radio friendly, and this is why they seem to be seen as Oz's top indie act. But after Tim rogers work on the 'dirty deeds' soundtrack and the new 'you am i' album, deliverance, the lads have to be the top aussie indie band. |

The Remedy Session (they have shit on mp3.com, I saw them live - pretty good, also talked to thier lead singer and drummer in person (both chicks both cool) IRL and online).

I dunno if they are all that unknown, but I like Farside a lot. Not Pharside, the rap group. Some songs by Farside are "Hope You're Unhappy," "I'll Wait Today," and "Dark." Sort of emo, I guess, though I hesitate to put anything in that much-maligned category for fear of scaring people off.

Five Pointe O are great, it's a pity that the singer and one of the guitarists left after the first album, their singer has such a good voice. The Infinity is one of the best songs ever.

Dragonforce, formerly known as DragonHeart, they are metal with a kick ass vocal leader, if you like the song Valley of the Damned, then check out their other stuff |

If a band forms in Brisbane, will it cause an electrical storm in Newcastle? One small act can set off a chain reaction of chaotic riffs and thunderous bass. That's The Butterfly Effect.
For this powerful four-piece, the self-funded release of their self-titled EP sparked a whirlwind, swinging them into the Australian rock scene like a wrecking ball. 2002 saw them sign a deal with Roadshow Music and play to sold out gigs in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, not to mention blistering sets at Livid, the Falls Festival, Homebake and the Big Day Out. "Everything you could want to happen to you [as a band], happened last year. It's been crazy," says drummer, Ben Hall. The band initially formed when Hall and guitarist, Kurt Goedhart went to High School together, originally setting out with a different bassist and singer. Soon Clint Boge took over on vocals. "During the first show with [Clint], we could feel a big difference in the vibe," says Hall. The current line-up was completed when bass player, Glenn Esmond, joined the band midway through last year. It's proved a winning combination. Their EP has now sold in excess of 8,000 copies, their new single, "Crave" reached No. 11 on the Triple J Net50 in only its second week and "The Cell" featured in the Net50 for 15 weeks. Performing over 100 shows nationally, they've supported the likes of Superheist, Pacifier, Killing Heidi and Grinspoon. The only real Aussie band I know is The Butterfly Effect, (http://www.butterflyeffect.com.au). They haven't released an album yet, and I can't get a hold of their EP but from what I've heard, they are good though.
