Phish calling it quits
For those who care, Phish have announced their retirement.
Their website is getting hammered, so you might have trouble pulling it up there, but the quote below is from www.phish.com/news/: Quote:

Yeah, it's been a long time coming. I've seen those guys nearly a hundred different times over the years. When they announced theair hiatus a few years back we thought that was it, or at least I was OK with that. The last shows I saw were nothing to go crazy about and there was just a weird vibe at thosse shows. I've been able to see them a few times since and I've got tickets for both shows in Brooklyn and Saratoga and I'm sure I'll end up in Coventry too. Hows the saying go?...All good things must come to an end?

I actually believed they'd be coming back after the hiatus. Just seemed like they needed time for a break and time to regroup. I agree that it hasn't been the same since they came back. It really is a good time to hang it up. I'm sure after 21 years of playing together, the idea of having more time to be with their families and also of having the freedom of choice of what they pursue musically (without having impending Phish tours looming in the background conflicting with what they wanted to do personally) looked appealing. Probably will make Alpine and considering Coventry too. Would be a great way to end it.

Any one member releasing a self-titled album is usually the death knell of the band. Anastasio also had his supergroup thing with Oysterhead before that.

For more insight on this, watch Charlie Rose on your local PBS television station tonight, May 26 (Wednesday). Trey is going to be on there for an hour talking with Charlie about the band and the future. It's on at 11:30 in my neck o the woods.

I was talking to a friend at work today who is a real Phish-head and when we got to talking about the impending break-up, his face kinda got all red and he looked sooo forlorn I thought he was going to cry...I felt so bad. Here is a guy who has devoted a very large part of his life to going to shows and getting into the whole culture...going to each show was kind of like going to a family reunion each time. And now it is winding down...much like the dying of a loved one.
I kinda am bummed only because I only just started getting into the whole "Jam-band" thing recently and probably won't get a chance to see them. But in their 21 years together they've put out hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of great, eclectic music. most of which have been captured in one digital format or another by my friends. Also there are a few quality bands that will gladly take the helm of the starship, put 'er in warp-drive and guide the fans into the future. I've been turned on to String Cheese Incident and a band called New Monsoon who I had the positively perfect pleasure of seeing at a local club. ~Hey Guttersnipe...Maybe I'll see you at Bonnaroo. I'll be the one with the grin on my chin!!!

It is kind of sad. For a lot of people around my age (30 this year), it was a big part of college and our twenties...Widespread Panic too (I went to school at UGA and Panic was just starting to get big after I started school there). Now Phish has decided to break up and Widespread doesn't sound the same anymore after Mikey Houser (guitarist) died. It's kind of signifies the end of our youth for a lot of us. I'm by no means old and can still have my fun seeing many of the other bands I enjoy, but I don't think it'll ever seem the same anymore.
I enjoy Cheese's older stuff (their live album that came out around 98 and a lot of the boots I have from back then are great), but they seem to have changed their sound more and more into something that, while I can enjoy seeing live, I opt for other trips over. I've heard good stuff about New Monsoon, but haven't checked them out yet.

Nobody is ever going to replace them. Just like nobody can replace the Grateful Dead...not even The Dead! The jamband community is thriving though. There is so much good music to check out these days, with the same kind of atmoshere that was present at those old Phish shows. If your looking for that sort of thing. If your just getting into jamband music, check out www.jambase.com That's pretty much headquarters for the scene. If it's jammy, it's at that site, check it out.
Wait until the end of Bonnaroo Quasi Mojo, you'll never know what hit ya!!

I agree that this feels like the end of my youthful days. I got to see a few GD shows before Jerry died, but I felt like Phish would be around forever. I have a lot of great memories at these shows.
I'm looking forward to seeing what they can come up with now though. They are older and wiser and by no means finished with music. I think we will hear from them in one form or another for years to come. |
