Why is music SO FREAKING WHINY these days?!
I heard that godawful piece of crap called "The Reason" by Hoobastank today.
WHY DO PEOPLE VOLUNTARILY LISTEN TO THAT???? WHO WANTS TO LISTEN TO SOMEONE PISS AND MOAN AND WHINE FOR 5 MINUTES STRAIGHT WHILE PLAYING TWO OR MAYBE THREE OF THE SAME DAMN GUITAR CHORDS?? It seems like music got that way a couple years ago when "nu-metal" or whatever became popular. At this rate of increasing whininess, I predict that in a couple years from now, rock stations will begin playing nothing but sound clips of three year olds being told that they have to go to bed early. |

I like The Reason. It's a lot better than the Crawling in the Dark shit they put out a couple of years back. I enjoy The Reason because it takes the generic whine ballad and puts a twist on it. Right when you think the vocals will hit a certain note, they don't, and it makes it all the better. All musicians whine, you need to get used to that. Death metal musicians whine. They all whine. Else there wouldn't be music.

I blame it on the current society. We are lazy, bored individuals. I remember being a farm kid. There was no time to whine (or anything else). Now I see kids in the streets late at night and for hours at a time. I personally find time to whine a bit too.... gotta work on that. If you have time to whine, then you have time to do something about what is making you whine.

Yeah, I think The Reason is a good song. Then again, I am a fairly big Hoobastank fan. There's worse out there in terms of "whiny bitch music", my example of that is anything by Dashboard Confessional....

I have no idea what this "The Reason" is, but why in God's name do you think that whining is unique to this generation of music. There have always been whiny rockers. For Christ's sake, the Cure became rock legends because of their whine, and what about Morrisey, Erasure, Nirvana, Smashing pumpkins, the list goes on and on. Whiny rock has always been and it will always continue until there's nothing left to whine about.

Because teenagers, a huge demographic in terms of disposable income, feel all fuckered up and confused about who they are and will thusly buy music that reflects their confusion and lack of satisfaction with life in general. It is all business.

I like the way Bret Michaels from Poison, or some other singer from hair metal bands, put it on a VH1 hair metal special. He said he didn't understand why people wanted to listen to grunge music where they're surrounded by angst and unhappiness because with hair metal and most of the 80s rock music was about putting on a good show and having a good time. And that kind of depression music is just still around today, and I can't wait for it to fade away......even though it will inevitably come back.

Music has tended to be whiny for years now. Unfortunately, with the proliferation of this emo crap that can't be avoided on MTV, the blaring guitars and other accompaniment have faded away to leave a depressed-looking male in his early twenties, staring at his feet, and whining more loudly than the instrumental tracks.
Music goes through three phases, angry, happy, and whiny. We're in a whiny phase now. I look forward to the return of the angry phase, if for no other reason than the mosh pits. |

Exactly! The ability to identify with the sentiment or tone of the music is a major factor in determining the type of music that appeals to a person. Whether it be the lyrics, the music itself, to bandsw image or whatever, it a major factor. |

Anywayssssssssss, it just seems that the fraction turned into the majority. Why? What is in the water nowadays that gets children all emotional? The only thing I worried about in highschool was how I was either going to get to the game on friday night, or how I was going to get to lunch after second period. I didn't wander around aimlessly with my fucking Nikon, trying to capture life one still frame at a time. Mabye I just led a sheltered highschool life, or maybe the fact that I constantly skipped class helped me miss the seed-planters of today's emo youth. I am not sure.

I agree, music is too whiny. Not the lyrics themselves, but the singers are literally too fucking whiny.
A Simple Plan, Sum 41, all those bands, they're so HORRIBLE. It sounds like they took a 14 year old going through puberty and put him in front of the mic. They don't even TRY to have a sound or have personality.. it's all nasaly pre-pubescent singing and I honestly don't see how ANYONE can like it (unless you yourself are going through "the change"). Some compared this to grunge... nothing alike. At least grunge was raw anger and intelligent. Most of the newer music is just more like whiny "I gotta do my homework and be in bed by 9 or I get grounded and can't play with my pokemon" type of angst. Seriously, it's like half these people wrote the entire album in like 20 minutes. None of the songs have a single ounce of thought put into them. They're just generic lyrics that *ANYONE* could come up with (which is probably why there are so many of these bands nowadays).

When I first heard the song I thought it was Our Lady Peace. Imagine my amazement knowing how two bands can suck so much and be popular at the same time.
