Hm. probably due to a combination of inexperience with concerts and youth and personal moments of glory, the best thing I ever saw was the Dead Kennedys with Butthole Surfers opening in NY in 86. That pretty much ruined me for a normal life right there.

one? ONE?!! that's just mean. and impossible. I go to too many concerts to pick just one... are you freakin' crazy?

GN'R - Perkins Palace, Pasadena (r.i.p.) '86/'87 (New Year's Eve)
You just KNEW these guys were gonna be huge. I'd seen them in clubs a few times already but this show really stood out. I remember Adler's arm was broken (but he was running around the stage anyway) and Fred Coury from Cinderella was bangin' the skins. Great f-ing night.

Melissa Etheridge - California Theatre, San Diego '89
First album had just come out; there were maybe 300 people there and I'd seen her in a bar in Long Beach previously, but this was different. She had a BAND now! Oooooh! And they had just come back from their first tour of Europe and had a bunch of new songs to play. "Royal Station" always makes me think of this show...

Neil Young - Greek Theatre, L.A. '90
Freedom tour, he played Rockin' in the Free World twice "cuz I really like this song." 4 encores - people wouldn't budge even when the house lights came up. David & Graham came out and sang "Ohio" with him. Maria frickin' McKee opened for him. Everything about that night was magic.

Toy Matinee - Roxy, L.A. '91
You just had to be there. Both shows, but #2 was better. Kevin Gilbert, Marc Bonilla, Spencer Campbell, Toss Panos and Kevin's girlfriend Sheryl Crow on keys. I stil get chills.

Walden Woods benefit - Universal Amphitheater, L.A. '91
Neil Young, John Fogerty, Roger Waters and Don Henley. Don singing Gilmour's parts on "Comfortably Numb" is something I'll never forget and Neil played from a circle of guitars...and he used all of them. First time I'd ever heard him play "After the Gold Rush" on a pump organ, too. Wow. Just... wow.

Lindsey Buckingham - Coach House, San Juan Capistrano '92
opening of the "Out of the Cradle" tour and the first time anyone heard "Big Love" with just him and an acoustic. It's a staple of Mac shows now, but it was friggin' mind-blowing that night, as was the whole show. 7 guitarists, 2 drummers. never heard Mac songs sound that _full_ before in concert. (the Wiltern show the next week gets an honorable mention)

Brian Setzer Orchestra - The Joint, Las Vegas '98 (New Year's Day)
They blew the doors off the dump, plain and simple.

Mike Keneally/Reeves Gabrels - Baked Potato, Hollywood '01
absolutely smokin'...

Train - House of Blues, L.A. '01
I have _never_ seen that place so in tune with a band before or since.

honorable mention:
I saw Better than Ezra at HoB, L.A. last summer and they got blown off the stage by the opening act, Cowboy Mouth. I'd heard their name before, but never any of their music. I have 4 CDs now. GREAT show! Highly recommend seeing them live...

Easy - Sugar in Iowa City in the Spring of 93. Fairly small room, but it rocked! I was in good shape, and I still came out of the pit absolutely exhausted. It was one of the best shows that Bob Mould has ever done IMHO. The Chicago concert in the fall of 94 was excellent too, and that was the last time that they ever did "Explode & Make Up".

Ah, the days when even second tier bands were making better music than 95% of what's out there today.... Just remember that NYKOTB gave way to Nirvana....

I want to list three or four, but in keeping with the rules of the thread... I'm gonna go with my first Jimmy Buffett concert. It was my First Look - and I've been an avid parrothead ever since.

The Ataris at the Fireside Bowl in Chicago. It is a really small place, a bowling alley actually. The stage only comes up to right under your knees. My friend and I got on stage to sing 'San Dimas High School Football Rules' with Kris Roe. So awesome. He was much chunkier then.....

Live Aid, Philly, July 13, 1985. I had just graduated high school and was working a summer job in the Moorestown NJ mall. My friend called my store and told me tickets had just gone on sale. I ran to the ticket Ticketron outlet at Wanamakers and nailed 2.

It was an amazing concert, with the UK performers, some of the appearing live both at the US and UK shows, the reunions, the vibe.

The Freddie Murcury tribute Concert at Wembley Stadium. That was a fun day out, where else are you gonna see Metalica, Robert Plant, David Bowie and George Michael on the same bill. It was like a variety show, a little bit for everyone.

Out of all the concerts I've been to, I have to say that Stuck Mojo (metal band from atlanta) was one of the best shows I've seen. They always play small venues and hang out with the crowd before and after the show. The last time they were around here, they pulled on stage an 8 year old kid who knew all the words...

Now the rest of the band is playing 80s style metal with one of the WWE guys as the singer .. I miss Bones.
