punk music
Without reading through all past posts (as I am a newbie....yes, i know....) I'm just going to start a new thread to see if there are any punk music fans out there? And no offense, but I don't mean pop punk fans that think they're hardcore but don't know names like Rancid, Face To Face, The Real McKenzies and the like, but I mean True fans. If you're out there, gimme a shout, would love to converse

I like punk and was into it in my teens. I was more of a hardcore fan than punk. Used to spend my weekends at cbgb/lamour/continental divide/city gardens and just see shows. Those were great days. Some Bands that are still in my playlists...
Circle Jerks Bad Brains Black Flag Gorilla Biscuits Sick of it all Clutch Minor Threat Dag Nasty The Clash Operation Ivy Descendents/All Social D Inside Out Sub Society The Faction Odd man out The Bruisers Judge Warzone Biohazard That's all I can think off now. Im not really into the newer punk. Now and then I'll find a band I really like..but not as much as I used to...

Oh I guess you could say I like punk... but just a tad but. As of late I've started to listen to Emo bands like Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Story of the Year... But also I'm into Dashboard Confessional... It's good stuff (except for his new cd)

ah punk music. classic punk, i assume your speaking of. even though im a little after its time(18 years of age)i still listen. im an avid listener of social distortion, the vandals, *nofx*, pennywise to name a few. the newer pop punk shit isnt nearly as good....with the pop trend and all, but i guess thats what happens to some music over time.

I wouldn't classify them as new seeing as how they came out before punk became so mainstream, but a lot of you may have only come to know them in recent years. Regardless, here is a sample: "Life Makes No Sense" Everything is turning grey, but I won't hold my breath today Cause' I'm not scared and to tell the truth I just don't care. Are you looking for an answer? When you still don't know the question. It's like lighting candles in the rain- Sometimes life can be a pain, But don't give up without a fight. Sometimes when you feel afraid, don't give up and run away. Cause' two wrongs don't make a right. What's the point in crying when you've don nothing wrong. It was right there all along. The world's nothing but a lie and everyone is going to die But what can I say? Just help me make it through today. You don't need a destination just to go somewhere in life. It's like throwing feathers at the wind- They come right back to you again. So why not give it one more try? Just cause' things aren't what they seem It doesn't mean you shouldn't dream Just don't get your hopes to high. Cause' when things don't turn out right You world comes crashing down. Hope you like

Re: punk... I went to the Dashboard show in Niagara Falls Sunday night. Why Why WHY do they have punkish type bands as their opening acts? They had 3 bands, Say Anything, The Get Up Kids and Thrice. They weren't bad, but it's just weird that they tour with a band like Dashboard. The musical styles are just so different I think. I was in the front row. Everything was cool up until the Get Up Kids started their set. Then everyone started acting like assholes. I hate mosh pits. I hate getting shoved in the ribs at a show. I hate getting stepped on. Fuck that. Sorry, I guess this has nothing to do with anything. Enjoy your punk music kids, I'll hang back by the bar and enjoy the music without getting my face smashed in by a 15 year old with a mohawk.

I remember when I saw the Sex Pistols on their reunion tour in I think 1997? the opening acts were Gravity Kills and MXPX?
What the hell was Gravity Kills doing there? Well, they ended up bailing out and MXPX played their asses off, but it was still a weird mix of shit for an opening act that's for sure. I thought the crowd was gonna kill those poor fellas. Good time though, I'd never seen so many people in one place moving as one. Kinda scary. Hey Av, if you ever go to a show around Seattle, look me up? We'll hang out in the front row, and I'll keep you from getting knocked around!

I'm just getting into punk, but so far I can say I really only like older punk. Stuff like The Misfits, NoMeansNo, Husker Du, X, Meat Puppets.
Seems kinda like the newer stuff has reversed the punk ideal.

hehe... "ARE YOU READY TO ROCK!!!???"
crowd screams "YEAH", MXPX says, "well you'll get to in just a few songs, but we've gotta play too, so sit tight, and when the other guys get up here you'll soon be a rocking!! Kinda sad, seeing how MXPX are from the town where I live now in Washington. Beautiful Silverdale! Our only claim to fame... hooray for us!!

Black flag is definately up there with shaping the direction of what punk is today, and I don't know how many arguments me and my buddy Jeff had over what was the best line up.I'm a Keith Morris fan, he was a Rollins fan..he would always try to argue the Bill Stevenson angle and play my love of the Descendents against me. Either way punk/hard core was a huge impact on my life. I felt I found something that accepted me. Here is another question I'll ask you all. What was the album that turned you on to punk? Mine was Minor Threat's Out of step. I remember that day so clearly now. A late autumn day in 1987. My friends and I had just gotten back from skating the curbs down at the A&P(Slappy grinds were all the rage then!) and one of them put the album on. The first song on that album is Betray. That song makes me stoked to this day. I made of copy of it on tape. After that, my whole life changed, I was opened to this entire new culture that I could identify with. I'm thankfull I heard that album that day. It made me realize how important music would be in the rest of my life. |

I didn't really have my own music identity back then... had I and I probably would have been hardcore punk. My sister's boyfriend has a Punk band and from that.. I've slowly been getting into it and noticing all of the great music I've been missing. I'll be sure to make great use of this thread..
I can't wait till my sister's B/f's band gets their CD out (they should be nearing completion). For the curious, the band is CookiePuss. (Punk/Ska... sometimes a bit of both, sometimes its more defined.. either way I've been impressed)

You know, this whole PUNK thing is a real sore spot for me. I love punk music, and it is always my number one genre. I love the old school punk, and some of the early and late 90's punk, and I agree that this new-age MTV punk pretty much sucks ass. One of my favorite bands is the Anti-Nowhere League, second to the Sex Pistols, if you must know.
Now, on to more pressing issues. What is "A" punk? There is no such thing. See, the whole punk mentality revolves around a few key issues. 1) A true punk does not care what others think of him. 2) He has disrespect for anyone who abuses power. If the power is used correctly, he has no problem with it. 3) A punk holds respect for the opinions of others, though he may not agree with them, as long as the others hold respect for his opinions, as well. See, to be considered a punk is a very contradictory thing. Most people that are considered to be punk today wear the band tee-shirts, the wrist cuffs, the spiked jewelry; basically anything out of Hot Topic. They dress to stand out. If these people truly were punk, they wouldn't have to feel that they needed to stand out, because if they truly didn't care what others thought of them they would not want to stand out. Dressing to make yourself stand out in a crowd is a classic behavior example of caring what other people think of you (and this is different than standing out because you actually like the clothes, which is rarely done). Just to show that I am not condescending, I will be the first to admit that in the beginning, that is why I dressed to stand out- to show my contempt for the people who dressed like a herd. Now, I do a combination of the herd/standing out look. So many people think they are punk because they disrespect all kinds of authority, and because they want anarchy (in the UK). Well, they aren't then. When the movement started, punks were only acting out against authority because they were abusing their power. It got blown to proportion to the point of hating all authority. Also, the image of punk has turned into a very negative image due to "punks" becoming stuck up. Scenes like the one found in SLC Punk where they beat up the hicks are what cause that. Don't get me wrong, I love that movie. In the past, a true punk respected the opinions of others, even if they differed from his own. He didn't hate people just because they thought differently. That would be closer to a nazi than a punk. But, once again, time changes things. I guess my point is that the true punk has died and turned into a spoiled brat who if he can't have his way, will wear different clothing and rebel against anything- be it ridiculous or not. A true punk could be anyone, regardless of what music they listened to or how many old school bands they could name or how many pairs of Chuck Taylors they owned (and how torn up they are). A "true punk" is someone who fits all of the guidelines I mentioned above, regardless of what they listen to. In my opinion.

IMHO
Listening to punk and being a punk are two different things. Some of my least favorite persons consider themselves "punks". It doesn't mean that I can't enjoy the music. I just dislike a good portion of the people who think it's a "lifestyle".

I used to listen to a lot of punk bands, like NOFX, Lagwagon, NUFAN, Anti-Flag, Dead Kennedys, Tilt, Randy, Pennywise, DLK etc. from the age of 14 to areound 16-17. Since punk was basically all I ever listened to, I eventually got bored to death of the lack of originality in the genre. But through the local D.I.Y. club, where most of the punk bands in my town play, I got in touch with other kinds of music derived from punk rock, like Hardcore, Screamo, Emocore, Metalcore etc. which is what usually listen to these days (in addition to my daily dose of metal and progressive rock)
