Excuse the late reply.
Im not into any of that emo stuff. IMO its a load of horse shit made for teenagers to be a big sell out. However my favorite band (Iron Maiden) has been said to be a classic emo band.. which I dont get considering it being a very diverse sound of heavy metal.. but oh well. Bands- Dead Kennedys (yeah!!!) Ramones Clash Against Me! Turbonegro (yeah!) Dropkick Murphys Pogues (punk?) Angry Samoans Sex Pistols Burning Brides Flogging Molly NOFX (yeah!!) Misfits Im sure I can name some more, but its that sort of punk that generally doesnt have to do with whiney girlfriend dumping shit. |

I like this thread...some cool comments from those who subscribe to the old and the new schools.
But for a blistering, raw punk tune released in 1977 by Aussie band The Saints, check out 'Stranded (I'm)'. Released before 'God Save The Queen', it's still considered one of the finest tunes of the genre.

ahhh, how i love punk rock. Im into all different types of punk and some examples of bands i like would be:
Subhumans The Skeptix Doom Crass Toxic Narcotic The Exploited The Threats G.I.S.M. Riisteyt Skitsystem Black Flag Circle Jerks M.D.C. Chaos UK Broken Bones Abrasive Wheels ....and the list goes on. The problem with punk nowadays isnt a lack of good bands, theyre there if you look for them, but rather that the scene has gone to shit. Venues are not booking a lot of shows anymore and a lot of the shows are ending with fights, which causes the venues to stop booking punk shows. If there werent so many dicks in the scene who dont accept people who dont dress like "punks" or dont accept people who listen to different music, then maybe things would be better. The only places around here that still book punk shows are cbgb, the knitting factory, abc norio and sometimes Irving Plaza. |

anyone who loves the clash, and has any appreciation for the newer, more angst-ridden, navel-gazing pop that passes for punk these days should really dig around & find the first replacements album, "sorry ma, forgot to take out the trash."
the songs, "customer", and "i hate music" are 2 minute blasts of perfect adolescent frustration. "johnny's gonna die" is in contention for best punk ballad(?) ever. yes, ever.

What a great thread, there has been some great bands listed already, I'll write my list too. Thanks to ForwardtoDeath for mentioning Subhumans, I thought I was the only one. I can't really name one album that got me started in punk, but some of them were Circle Jerks - Group Sex, Dead Kennedy's - Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death, Nevermind the Bollocks Here's The Sex Pistols...
Here are some of my favorites: Descendents (probably my favorite) Bad Religion The Vandals Circle Jerks Dead Kennedy's NOFX Pennywise Suicidal Tendencies Black Flag 7 Seconds Subhumans Sex Pistols Ramones "yes the Ramones" The Clash MXPX Since we are on this subject how does everyone feel about Me First and the Gimme Gimme's? I like them alot. |

Hey ForwardtoDeath. I saw Toxic Narcotic recently. I don't really like them, and all, I was at the show to see Defiance and Drongos for Europe, but hey! That's almost like a connection we've got, you and I.
Uh. Also, I've been wondering. I used to sort of like GISM, but I looked them up on the internet, and what I assumed to be their webpage totally turned me off. What the fuck is "Anarchy and Violence?" Anyhow, I personally think that Pennywise is a pretty boring band. I like Citizen Fish, The Subhumans (saw them live!), Operation Ivy, Flux of Pink Indians, Blitz, The Partisans, The Dead Boys, anything with Jello Biafra... I like a broad spectrum of bands.

Hey HeadyIncognito. Ive seen the subhumans live too, and that is probably my favorite show that I have ever seen. They were fucking awesome, played an incredibly long set and even played an encore. The place was crazy.
GISM doenst really have an official website, just a lot of tribute sites. The band doesnt exist anymore, as their guitar player, Randy Uchida died. As far as the anarchy violence thing goes, the only thing I can say is that the band was truly insane. Ive seen concert footage of them at my friends house and the singer took out a flamethrower, pointed it straight at the audience, and let 'er rip. Whether this was a staged stunt or not, it was still kinda crazy. Also, the singer would jump into the audience and just start beating the shit outta people. But they're a good band, and thats all that counts. |
