Guitar players, what's your coolest chord?

The one that feels GREAT to my fingers and ears is any barred dominant seven with the added sharp 9 (barred in the E-major position).

It's such a cool power chord.

digby 05-07-2003 08:52 AM

any of the 3 fully diminished 7 chords... no one ever sees them coming... :D

KWSN 05-07-2003 12:35 PM

E power chord, fret 7 on the A string. I don't know why, but I just LOVE to use that. My favorite progression is a simple EFG metal progression, at least lately. It's about the heaviest one there is. I especially like this one (all 16th notes)

E E F E E F E F E E F E G G F F

I just love the way that sounds, played really fast, with lots of distortion.

A simple D (232) - It's the saddest of all chords.

I guess it would have to be a barre chord with dropped D tuning.
E.g. 224400. chunky on the bridge pickup, muddy on the neck.

Dustallica 05-07-2003 06:46 PM

An Open E Minor if its strummed really slowly..a la Nothing Else Matters. It's just awesome sounding.

vermin 05-07-2003 07:14 PM

The weird E chord from 'Purple Haze'.

hey i tried that and it does sound pretty cool.

my fav has to do with anything in a dropped "D".

I like this....tab because I suck at reading notation...these are the main chords for Billy Idols, Eyes Without A Face...I like those cheesy 80'2 tunes...plus these chords sound good together.

I'm also a big fan of

which is cool on any fret, add the high E hammer on for some funk action.

Lebell 05-10-2003 12:01 PM

I'll have to try some of those.

crackpot 05-10-2003 07:45 PM

How about:

I like the bit of dissonance in there sometimes... right? Wrong?

gibber71 05-10-2003 09:12 PM

I like all flat five substitutions just to have a moment to rip out of the norm with the coinciding lydian flat seventh scale.

Spektr 05-10-2003 09:14 PM

C add 9. It's sexy, it's mellow, and it fuckin rocks

Dimebag 05-10-2003 10:55 PM

I'm a big fan of jazz, and I find myself using 13th a lot.

For instance Bb13 = 6x6788
Really good exercise for you power chord players out there too

OMFUG 05-12-2003 11:50 AM

A minor; also, variations on that.

philzilla 05-12-2003 04:02 PM

Rush - Hemispheres. most of the chords in that, you've never played before. awesome. go learn it.

rideough 05-19-2003 05:19 AM

my fav is 076780 for sur(em dim7? can remember) play that instead of E anytime and you get instant Jimmy Page funkiness built right in!!!!

Cadd9 on your acoustic changes a song from same old same old to Neil Young brilliance!!!

That's an E7#9 chord. Also listen to Hendrix's "Foxy Lady". The E7#9 is followed by a G major and an A major chord. Oooh,..Foxy Lady.

ReggErving 05-20-2003 10:05 AM

I just started to take guitar classes at school, maybe if I learn something some of you can help me understnd some of this stuff you posted.

It's also in Funk #49 by the James Gang

AnUnkind 05-22-2003 09:48 PM

Man, all the years I have been playing guitar I haven't bothered to learn any technical stuff. I dont even really buy sheet music that would help me learn chords and whatnot... I do have some stuff that I will share though...

e x x x
B 8 10 8
G 5 9 7
D x x x
A 7 x x
D 7 7 5

I think these three go well together.

Heavy Distortion, E power chord starting on open e. Low, powerful, easy to hit, gets the job done.
