Kid Koala

Okay, this is kind of a rebirth of the "Is a DJ a musician?" thread. A couple of nights ago I saw Kid Koala and some other guys like Amon Tobin and P Love. I'd heard of Kid Koala, and I've heard some turntablists before, but I've never seen them perform live. If there is anybody out there that thinks somebody like Kid Koala or Amon Tobin isn't a musician is smoking crack. I was simply blown away by this guys skill at the turntables. He would pick the needle up and down to play individual notes on the record in order to make his own riffs, and the scratching? Like I said, only once you see this stuff live can you really appreciate how talented these guys are. If you ever get the opportunity to see a turtablist, don't let it pass you by.

Has anybody else here ever seen Kid Koala or Amon Tobin? What other turtablists do you know of that you could suggest to me. I'm lovin' this stuff!

Or DJ Q-Bert, find yourself a copy of Wave Twisters, that'll break your brain.
If you ever get a chance to see Kid Koala perform with a band called Bullfrog, do it, one of the funnest shows I've been to.

Give a listen to anything done by the former Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Pick up Q-Bert's "Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik" in addition to Wave Twisters (imo it's a bit better). A new group to watch out for is Ned Hoddings. They opened for D-Styles' "A Night at the Knitting Factory" performance and seem to be the most innovative purist scratch group at the moment. Asisphonics.net has some good articles and guides on the progression of scratching if you're interested.

I would rather watch a turntablist in action before a lyricist.

I'm not sure what Kid Koala spins..So i am not sure of your style of music.

I listen to Jungle and i have seen a ton of Turntablists live at clubs & raves..It's amazing some of the scratching these guys can do.

Capitol J is a local Toronto DJ, I seen him about 3 years ago at The Docks in Toronto..He was scratching with his elbows..The crowd was going insane.

I am not huge on scratching..But i was impressed when i seen that.

what does amaze me about DJ's is how they mix in & out of every track not missing a beat..it's like listening to a 2 or 3 hour track.
