The Pogues

Was wondering if there are any pogues fans out there? Just lately ive been getting into them, and there doesnt seem to be many fans anymore (at least where im from). What are your favourite songs?

Sadly, I only really know one song. But I adore Fairytale in New York. It's one of my all time favourite songs. Must go listen to it now....

The Pogues, GREAT IRISH BAND!!!!! I had IF I Should Fall From Grace with God my Sr. year in high school and that tape had to be replaced 6 times that year from overplaying and friend theft.

Ah Good memories.

I love the Pogues. Now it does piss me off that you can now buy Pogues shirts at Hot Topic.

I've heard only a few Pogues songs, not too long ago, but I intend to get more into them. You may be interested in the fact that Shane Macgowan sings with Nick Cave on a cover of Bob Dylan's "Death Is Not The End."

But if anyone could recommend good songs/albums, I'd also appreciate it.

Found a tape back in college with The Pogues on one side and Black 47 on the other. Needless to say, it never made it back to it's original owner. I listened to that thing till it wore out.

Forgot about The Pogues till I found "Essential" in a friends CD collection and burned a copy (I couldn't find it anywhere else). Love every song on it and have been known to tear up during "Fairytale of New York" and "Thousands are Sailing."

Funny story: I was driving my Mom somewhere and had The Pogues playing in my truck. She loved it, so I got her a couple CD's for Christmas. Mom rocks.

Why?
Anyway, as much as I love the Pogues, they're long dead as a band.
Flogging Molly, on the other hand, is very much alive and playing in my town this Saturday.

I'll have to check that out... I've been meaning to find more of their stuff, but apparently I'm looking in the wrong stores....

Much love for the Pogues. I have to agree with Pan6467 about "If I Should Fall From Grace of God", I love that song. Sadly most of my Pogues material is on vinyl. By the way, for those of you who like the female vocals on "Fairytale of New York", her name is Kirsty MacColl and she has done some great stuff.

A beautiful voice. Sadly she past away a year or two ago in what I remember to be a boating accident.

I did not know that, my wife and I were just listening to her "Electric Landlady" c.d. this weekend and were wondering what became of her. If you are unfamiliar with her work, I recommend it.

Here's a link to an article on her death, back in 2000.

Here are the words to one of the best songs I've ever heard.

Fairytale Of New York
By Shane MacGowan / Jem Finer (1987)
It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
And I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They've got cars
Big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old

When you first took my hand
On a cold Christmas Eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of New York City
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on the corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the NYPD choir
Were singing 'Galway Bay'
And the bells were ringing
Out for Christmas day

You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Living there almost dead on a drip
In that bed

You scum bag
You maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse
I pray God
It's our last

I could have been someone
So could anyone
You took my dreams
From me when I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you

Favorite Albums roughly in order:

If I Should Fall From Grace With God
Essential Pogues
Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
Red Roses for Me

Hey, I recently read 'A Drink With Shane MacGowan' (lead singer bloke of the pogues), it was really tops. Its a biography. Its really interesting and MacGowan is one deluded, intelligent, demented person. A great read.

costello 09-01-2004 09:28 AM

ya they have a documentary out there somewhere about him, been wanting to check it out but cant find it at any of the stores around here.

roachboy 09-01-2004 10:06 AM

is macgown still touring with the popes?
i liked the pogues. i developed a pervese affection for "summer in siam" from teh video. but it faded. so did they, for that matter.

hu-man 09-02-2004 12:15 AM

I've always loved The Pogues, it's the perfect drinking music...

redarrow 09-02-2004 05:37 AM

I agree, it is good music at bars and parties, esp. when people recognize the song and all sing along.

Mephisto2 09-02-2004 06:27 AM

Dirty Old Town is an old, and rather famous, ballad. It's about Leeds.

It was written by a famous English song writer called Ewan MacColl. Note my memory may be failing me, and the town might be Salford.

In any case, it's not about Dublin. But it could be! :-)
