Mini-Review: Gus + Frank, Xavier Rudd, Machine Gun Fellatio
For those that are interested....
Just a couple notes before I get started. First: I was getting progressively drunker as the night went on. Second: it's a "mini" review cause I don't know that I have enough to say about them. So Gus + Frank, Xavier Rudd, and Machine Gun Fellatio played at the local Uni for O'Week.. I attended.. and I have to say... not that bad. There was a band right when I rocked up.. but as I wasn't really paying attention I won't say much on them. They had some pretty metal-sounding stuff... I remember that. Anyways... Gus and Frank came on. For those who don't know them: http://www.gusandfrank.com.au/ is their main website... So Entertaining is their main song. I didn't mind them, they're a great "opening-settling in band". They played maybe 4-5 songs, all sounding fairly similar. Pretty enjoyable over all. Everyone knew So Entertaining, and that provided some energy for the crowd. They did a pretty funny rendition of a Rage Against The Machine song which everyone seemed to like (instead of "Killing In The Name Of".. it was "We Just Sold A CD"). Their opening song is called "We Suck"... how can you not like a band that's so cruisy? After them came Xavier Rudd. For those that don't know him.. think of him as a Jack Johnson that can play percussion and the digeridoo as well. Website: http://www.xavierrudd.com/ . Popular song could be To Let. There are quite a few good songs I could list. He's toured Canada, so he may be a bit more well known. This guy is amazing... and seeing him live just made him cooler. He sang for a good hour + fifteen minutes. He played a lot of well known ones, but he also did some great jams on a couple songs (can't remember which ones, offhand). The crowd was loving it.. and for good reason. I don't think the drunken uni o'week crowd is the type of crowd he's used to (more the relaxed smokers.. which there were some of as well) but he performed well. Around 11:30 at night came Machine Gun Fellatio.. now apparently they've been on the Letterman show and have toured the States.. I didn't realise that (my mom in the States told me she knew of them after I told her I saw them). http://www.machinegunfellatio.com/ is their website. As for a song of their's I may have to give a couple. They are varied and very wacky.. checkout MuthaFukka on a Motorcycle, Unsent Letter, Love Rollercoaster. On stage.. they were really good.. I'd say great, but my expectations were pushed up with stories of past stage shows (one of the hot female band members stripping totally naked, freaky sideshow.. a person who would swallow a mic.. crazy stuff like that)... and this being an all-ages show.. they had to cut back on a lot of stuff. Still.. they were good and entertaining. One of the hot chicks (the one that gets damn near naked) involved the bouncers.. entertaining.. she jumped.. did halfnaked cartwheels.. stuff like that.. one of the guys jumped into the audience while singing.. another climbed up the speakers.. just general crazy stuff.. very entertaining. They played for a good hour+half->two hours. The half naked chick got even more near naked and came out and started the encore with the song Dirty Fucking Whore (the crowd was loving it.. it's a funny song.. and her singing it live made it great). Then they broke into a couple more songs and then that was it. It was actually a nice, full encore. They played a lot of their classics, but gave the crowd a sneak peak at their new album with maybe 3 or 4 new songs (which weren't bad.. at least one will be a radio hit). Overall.. a very enjoyable show. The alcohol may have helped some.. but I think sober I would have had the same opinions of the musical acts. For 3 groups (4 including the guys I didn't see much of) being so different in styles.. they pulled it off perfectly. I've heard these groups (at least a couple of them) are doing the rounds at other O'weeks around Australia. Anyone else get a chance to catch them? If you have a chance to go.. defintiely take it. It was well worth the $20 I paid to go. Last edited by Latch; 03-10-2004 at 02:37 AM.. |

what uni do you goto? i cant recall who played at our o'week night, but i dont think it was my uni cuz apparently it was a dry night, hence i didnt go.
either way, MGF seem to put on a decent show no matter where you see them, cuz chances are you've put down quite a number of ales by the time they come to be seen. |
