Icelandic bands
Hello everyone.
Fairly new member here (been here less than week), but didn't find this in a search, so thought I'd post a new thread... Everyone knows that Iceland has produced some very interesting and unusual artists in the past few years (Bjork and Sigur Ros). I have heard it said that the Icelandic music scene seems to be an incubator for these kinds of groundbreaking musicians, so I was wondering if anyone (a) has listened to other Icelandic bands, and (b) can make some recommendations. |

last summer in NYC's Summer Stage series in Central Park they had 3 Icelandic Bands performing.
Singapore Sling have a retro-funkadelic groove goin’ on and were recently cited by SPIN magazine as one of Iceland’s brightest young rock hopes. Their US debut album released on Stinky Records, “The Curse of Singapore Sling,” will be unveiled with the band’s first US tour this summer. Apparat Organ Quartet, currently recording their first album on TMT Entertainment, create strangely beautiful machine rock on ancient highly-customized electric music machines, including cheap home organs and Russian synthesizers. Trabant, on Thule Records, have been hailed as, “Reykjavik’s most interesting new band,” by Neil Strauss of The New York Times. The band describes their sound as, “a blend of robot technology and what we humans still have to offer music.” There is a popular music festival in Reykjavik (Rvk) at the end of summer, that lots of people flock to from all over the world. I have lots of Icelandic friends (no Bjork isn't one of them) and hopefully will make it to Iceland this summer.

I saw a piece on Apparat Organ Quartet on PBS about 6 months ago, and have anxiously awaited a US release of their music. It's very cool.

I really really really really really like Mum ... if you like Sigur Ros, but want something a little more uplifting/melodic, then perfect... I believe there's another group that goes by Mum, so I'd suggest finding the album that has the tracks revolving around swimming and water =P slightly vague I know.. this album was also recorded under water... ground breaking indeed!
