Haunting Music

Im not talking about music you would hear in a haunted house, but music that just has a haunted or really dark feeling to it. Something like Joy Divison in some cases sounds haunting to me. Anyone else have any suggestions? I feel in a dark mood.

Moonlight Sonata By Beethoven

I think, mainly, because it was played at the start of the game Shadowman on the Nintendo 64 (release in '99 i think?) and that's a creepy game, so i get the connotation there.

That said, i've heard the full part of it before and it acctually gets more cheerful, but i like the creepy piano at the start, which (come to think of it) is creepy nevertheless.

Speaking of which, i gotta get more of this magical symphony stuff off of my dad. It's money :D

Plan9Senior 02-15-2004 11:25 PM

'Sleepy Hollow' by Korn is a very haunting sounding. As a matter of fact, they have a lot of dark sounding songs, but that one I mentioned is particularly dark.

Edit. Now that I see that you like joy division, you might like HIM or even Fugazi. They have a similar style and have that dark sound.

Nefir 02-16-2004 06:02 AM

Anything by Elend, especially Umbersun. That album is positively demonic. Perhaps even terrifying.

For something more fitting the "haunting" but not "haunted" description, try the Damnation album by Opeth.

Chingal0 02-16-2004 06:08 AM

Ya, lots of Opeth stuff is kinda 'haunting' ..

Emperor is kinda like that too. Lots of shit you'd hear in bad dracula movies from the 50's and 60's.

ToolBag 02-16-2004 07:00 AM

Yeah Nefir, good call on the Elend, I believe I was given this name by a classmate and I loved it, just have a burnt cd right now if its the right band Im thinking of.

ToolBag 02-16-2004 07:01 AM

oops, opeth does indeed have some creepy music work as well.

Redjake 02-16-2004 07:20 AM

Enigma has some creep going on

glytch 02-16-2004 02:49 PM

Anything off the Silent Hill soundtracks is what I would call "haunting". Most of the stuff is really good, too.

sipsake 02-16-2004 02:55 PM

This Mortal Coil

Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber

rockzilla 02-16-2004 03:38 PM

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

It's not a doom n' gloom kinda haunting, more reverent.

Totally agree. All the songs on any of those soundtracks is dementing and weird.....

I almost forgot, Stabbing Westward. Weird ass haunting music right there.

Agreed. Very freaky stuff there.

NeverBorn 02-16-2004 07:40 PM

Try some Goth Bands..they're usually freaky beyond all hell

h2ogo69 02-16-2004 09:38 PM

napalm jazz...terrifying
death cube k... terrifying

MSD 02-16-2004 09:52 PM

I've found that cranking up the intro to Eraser (The song, not the movie) while driving alone at night gives a nice creepy feeling.

Jadey 02-16-2004 10:25 PM

Bach - Toccata and Fugue In D Minor

Quite a bit of Type O Negative stuff I would classify as haunting. Try "Black No. 1" or thier cover of "Summer Breeze".

saut 02-17-2004 09:02 AM

Godspeed You Black Emporer! - Infinity (the entire album)

Derwood 02-17-2004 11:56 AM

check out Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Vol 2" ... it's a two disc set.. all very beautiful, most of it deeply haunting... check out the first track of the first CD, Cliffs

venusinfurs 04-12-2004 11:13 PM

Faith and the Muse...some older London after midnight...The Shroud....hell, try gothic rock, ethereal, darkwave, deathrock, gothabilly...etc...

iamtheone 04-13-2004 03:18 AM

The Haunting, by Type O Negative. Great song!

qtpye4u84 04-13-2004 03:33 AM

I dont know the artist or the song but it was off of Johnny darko A very weird movie(to me). I hate that song if i hear it i get all freaked out and have to turn the radio off!!!!!!!!!( I was weirded out from that movie to)

Redlemon 04-13-2004 06:36 AM

Too obvious? "Haunted" by Poe. Best listened to in conjunction with reading "House of Leaves", by her brother.

kl0pper 04-13-2004 07:38 AM

morricone scores, and john zorn - the big gundown (where zorn "re-interprets" morricone's music in his freaky ass way...)
amon tobin is like a dark squarepusher
and venetian snares - winter in the belly of a snake is like joy division plus hardcore drill n bass

Stompy 04-13-2004 09:15 AM

Cryptorchid by Marilyn Manson

The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails: The song, and the remix "The Bottom" on Further Down the Spiral is a good one. Hell, the whole CD.

The Frail (Version) on Things Falling Apart (NIN)

Delirium Cordia - Fantomas. The entire CD is a 74 minute long song, but it's definitely some of the most twisted stuff I've ever heard. About 8 or 9 minutes into it, there's this very dark music with what sounds like a dentist picking away at someone's teeth.. or scraping of flesh off of a bone. It's described as "Possibly the soundtrack to a very dark, fever induced nightmare." Definitely worth checking out.

Fantastic recommend. Loved that album, and it is indeed haunting.

gallopingwanker 04-13-2004 02:07 PM

biercan 04-13-2004 02:30 PM

the whole donnie darko soundtrack except for mad world

Brayl 04-14-2004 08:29 PM

aphex twin's selected ambient works volume II is the most haunting and disturbing album i've ever heard but it's very lovely at the same time.

cleanx 04-14-2004 09:54 PM

follow the reaper by children of bodom

rev_skarekroe 04-15-2004 12:04 PM

Salva Nos - Medieval Babes
All the Pretty Little Horses - Current 93
Todeswunsch - Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows
Smile's OK - The Hope Blister

bparker805 04-15-2004 12:09 PM

If you want dark and moody, check out the Black Aria album by Glenn Danzig. Theres no lyrics to it. Just straight up dark sounding stuff. I love that friggen album.

Eviltree 04-15-2004 06:04 PM

Climbing up the walls by Radiohead has a bit of an eerie feeling to it. Don't know if you would consider it to be 'haunted' but as far as I know, its about the fears of the people in a mental asylum, where Thom (lead singe) worked before forming the band

Redjake 04-17-2004 01:25 PM

get some Stabbing Westward going on. I forgot about them.

I suggest What Do I Have to Do, Save Yourself, and Shame. Shame is more rock-induced (or something like it). The first two are winners for what you're lookin' for.

I dunno, I thought Mad World was kinda haunting. Also, I find the songs played at the orgy in Eyes Wide Shut to be pretty damn creepy. Gives me the chills just thinking about it...
