New Pepsi/iTunes Promotion
I just got one of these caps the other day and I wondered if anyone had tried this promotion? For those who haven't heard of it, Pepsi is giving away 100 million free downloads from iTunes. I thought it sounded good, but I have some reservations.
1) I saw that you have to download the iTunes jukebox in order to participate. Can you use the songs in other programs, or just their jukebox? 2) You also have to register to participate. I have others songs on my PC that I didn't pay to download. Is there any spyware or the like included that will enable them to know this? I know I am probably just being paranoid, but I like to be cautious. Any help would be appreciated. |
As far as I know, you can play them on any program that can normally play mp3s, and there's no spyware or anything. No strings attached, in other words.
It's an intriguing promotion. I've heard others say that they would still rather illegally download for free, rather than buy Pepsi to legally download, but it's still a very interesting gimmick. Even if I would rather illegally get them for free, the next time I want a soft drink I might just spring for a Pepsi, why not? |

The obvious workaround is to burn the tune to CD and then re-rip it back into mp3. I'm also almost positive that iTunes does NOT use any Spyware of any kind. |
The songs from the iTunes Music Store are in protected AAC format (.m4p) at 128kbps (this is generally considered equivalent to 192kbps MP3, with better highs). If you rip a CD using iTunes, you get regular AAC format (.m4a).
Only iTunes and the iPod can play .m4p files; however, as said before, you can burn to CD and re-rip to anything from there; there will be a slight loss of quality. No one has ever reported spyware/searching capability in iTunes, and I would be very surprised it if were in there. You can always send the codes to me it you don't trust Apple.... :D |
