famous guitarists and their guitars

the other day i told my mom that jimi hendrix made the fender strat famous and that eric clapton made the gibson les paul famous. now i know i am correct with hendrix, but i am now starting to convince myself that clapton used a fender also.

so who were some other guitarists to use the les paul besides jimmy page? and who were some that used fender guitars.

Yes, Clapton used a strat.

Les Paul users:
Ace Frehley - KISS
Tom Scholz - Boston
Ted Nugent
Joe Perry - Aerosmith
Duane Allman

Fender users:
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Mark Knopfler - Dire Straits
Eddie Van Halen (before he switched to Kramer and then his own custom)
Bruce Springsteen - (uses a Telecaster)
Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple
Jeff Beck

Just to name a few off the top of my head.

Actually Eric Clapton used a Strat predominantly during his early days and switched to a Les Paul for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.
He used the Les Paul for the first Cream Album Then used his 61 335 and his "fool" 64 SG.

Jimi Hendrix turned him on to Strats againc nad from there he proceeded to destroy the blues in his own way and "yuppify" the blues for a generation of aging baby-boomers.
bastard.

The last bit is just my opinion. I don't like Clapton much!

David Gilmour: Fender Strat. In fact, he owns the Fender with serial number 000001 (though it isn't technically the first every made).

Dave Davies used a Harmony Meteor to record You Really Got Me for the Kinks. He tends to play Fenders ( was one of the first major artists to play the Flying V style guitar). He is mainly using Fenders now when he tours and Ovations when he records.

So very underrated.

rideough 02-03-2004 08:43 AM

A young Jimmy Page did the solo for Ya Really Got me Now,

Much to the dismay of the Kinks, who weren't exactly technically proficient at their instruments yet.

Pagey also did the solo for Sympathy for the Devil by the Stones.

pan6467 02-03-2004 09:05 AM

LOL Ride you're asking for it, man. No Dave Davies did the solo for You Really Got ME...... Page played session work for a song or 2 but his style was not up to Ray's taste. (Not saying Page is bad, just saying Ray didn't like the work Page did). That is the fact. I don't know what he did for the Stones.

EVERYONE, FROM SHEL TALMY TO THE ENGINEERS TO EVERY KINKS MEMBER HAVE ALL STATED IT WAS DAVE (and trust me enough of them including Ray hated Dave that they would have come forward, because noone has anything to lose). Dave when he is on is one of the greatest guitarists ever.

How he did it was he had an old 15 watt Elpico amp that he slit and put knitting needles in to get the sound.

I can't think of the band right now it was a lesser known 1 hit wonder band that was big in the UK in the 60's and Page said he did thier guitar work and they have proof that Page couldn't have done it. Yet Page swears he did that also. Page just wants everyone to believe he is the greatest and provoked all these different sounds and styles. The man's ego knows no bounds.

Jimi Hendrix torched one of his Strats at that Jazz fest back in the day...It was then given to Frank Zappa, who had one of his roadies fix it up for him. Zappa played it for awhile...and eventually died, the guitar was left to his son Dweezil...he had it for like ten years or something, and finally auctioned off a little while ago. It went for something like $500,000...now I don't know where it is.

pan6467 02-03-2004 03:10 PM

Cool info...... damn that Dweezil wouldn't think he needed the money, but on the other hand it may not have meant that much to him. Me, I'd have kept it, but then again I'm sure if I were Frank's son I'd have enough memories and memorabilia around. Hopefully the person or entity that bought the guitar realizes its value and treasures it.
