Okay, so im in the car listening to a 'Stones cd, and as my voice goes hoarse, i realize that Sympathy for the devil just goes on too long. I mean the entire last 2min or so is just a bunch of 'woo woo's.

So, what is your favorite or most hated song that doesnt know when to quit?

Also, the live version of "Free Bird". Main part of the song is about 3:30 or so, and the album version has four minutes of solos and instrumentals. The Live version goes on an additional FIVE minutes, so 14+ total!

I like the song, but it seems a little much.

This really hits home when you realize you've picked one of these to sing at kareoke. Most egregious offender: Moster Magnet - Space Lord. I got bored AND hoarse. David Bowie - Cat People (yes it's been so long so long so long and I've been putting out fire over and over and over and over.) Elvis Costello - watching the Detectives ends just in time. You would think with 18 na na nana na na nana na na na na nanas at the end that Everlast - Black Jesus would get old, but I haven't found it so, and, as long as I carry intensity though it to the end, folks really seem to enjoy it.

irseg - I disagree. I can see that it is a matter of taste, though, so lets leave it there.

MPower, I think you're missing something in Sympathy; Keith is doing some really nifty guitar work behind all the woo wooing.

DJTestudo (the turtle moves!) & FoolThemAll, Hey Jude's like that too, only it's a crescendo going on with more layers of music for each of the 23 or so repetitions, and the same deal with Journey - Lovin', Touchin' Squeezin'. Another one that goes on superficially far too long, but which the repeated lyric is over some really awesome interplay between the bassist and guitarist is The Stone Roses - Love Spreads, which also has a sweet intro, very similar to Evenflow.

Freebirds is a jam. Live it could ideally go on forever, just switching out musicians. Not my favorite jamming song, but passable. Innagaddadavida is like that too, not very good, but passable. For the extra long jams, though, Phish and the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers are really where it's at. They go on and on and on and usually hold my attention.

That's the one that came to my mind as well. It's the most self-indulgently bloated version I've ever heard. And none if it is as good as the original, either, IMO.

The song is 30 minutes long. All but maybe 5 minutes of it is made up of the same 4-second phrase being looped. For 25 minutes. Nothing else happens. I've never made it all the way through.

And of course, there's the infamous Lou Reed album, Metal Machine Music. I don't think anybody has ever gotten through that whole album. I've only gotten past the first track all the way through one single time. It's just noise and feedback; no melody, no rhythm, etc.

mm yeah. but then again, the ambient parts of some TMV tracks aren't really part of the tracks, they're just there to create soundscapes. the actual tracks don't drag on too much. except cicatriz esp, where the song resumes after a long stretch of ambience. oh well.

Now that I think about it, that can be said about every other song on that album. They are all too long to be enjoyed.

Actually, the deal was that one of the guys in Iron butterfly was three sheets to the wind and trying to get "In the Garden of Eden" across to another guy in the band over the telephone, but the best he could do was Inna Gadda da Vida, so that's what they wrote down, and that's how the song is listed on the album and that's how the lyrics are actually written.

i definitely agree with the entire st anger album...each song is like 7 minutes of a palm muted, open c chord in dropped c tuning that just wont end...

I'm gonna get torn up for this one, but I gotta say, "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin. Let me just say that I love LZ, always have, and I like all their tunes. I like Kashmir too. It's just one of those songs that gets played out on the classic rock stations in my area. It just keeps going and going....I don't know, I like the song, but would like it more if there was like a 3 minute radio edit.

as tophat said, i disagree. although it is a matter of taste, the song was written as a tribute to buddy holly (please correct if wrong, but that is what i have read) and i would say it is a really beautiful song (god im starting to sound like the triple j presenters).

I tend to like long songs. Way back when I remember loving November Rain, then all of Metallica's 8:00 epics. So song length usually doesn't bother me. On of my favorite songs is Mother Sky by Can, and that's 14:28 (but you know a song's good when it's 14 minutes and most peoples summaries of it have nothing to do with its length).
At any rate. Songs that were too long for their own good...
I Feel So Alive (or whatever) by POD. The chorus just kept repeating for what felt like forever. Ugh.
Dark Star by the Grateful Dead. Maybe I've been spoiled by super-catchy long guitar songs (Maggot Brain, Machine Gun, Mother Sky, etc why do these songs all start with M?) but this song just went on for 23 minutes and never did anything particularly worth of that much time.
Well I can't think of any more glaring examples. Like I said, I usually like songs to be really lengthy. If it was a bad song at 3:00, it's a bad song at any length, in my opinion.
