Help me please Van Halen Concert

OK, heres a question for you. I can't remember the excat year, it was about 78 or 79 or 80 or 81, I was pretty drunk and high back then, but I remember clearly driving down to this small college town in Utah to this Van Halen concert. Anyways, the other day, there is this guy here at work that is an avaid Van Halen fan, and he had a picture of them in the early days. I told him about the concert I saw, and he said he never heard of it. I called my buddy, and he said yes, he remembers going to se the concert, in Logan, Utah. We looked on the Van Halen web site, and it shows no concert held there. I know for a fact where it was and that I was there. Any suggestions to how I can back up this which I know is true? Thanks for your time

The acid was pretty good back then.... just kidding!

J.R.V.A. 01-21-2004 03:06 PM

Yes, it was hehe
I just called the university, and the guy that answered said, I remember that. That was a good concert. Trouble is, we dont document that far back. Any other suggestions?

perripken 01-21-2004 03:25 PM

If it's that important to you, you could go to the local library and get microfilm of the local newspaper. If you can narrow it down to the time of year, it might not be hard. Or how about a local radio station, or does the university have a station?
Good luck.

I saw Van Halen up in Logan, Utah in 1978...ticket price....$6.50...Great show, but we weren't quite sure how to pronounce thier names :D"

J.R.V.A. 01-22-2004 07:07 AM

Yes Yes Thanks, I will try that too

J.R.V.A. 01-22-2004 07:44 AM

I have tried the libary, and the google. I cant find it hepl!!

quadro2000 01-22-2004 12:23 PM

Listen, man, here's the most important part: we believe you. We at the TFP know you were there, smokin' a doob and rockin' out to the raw power of Eddie on the gee-tar, staring in awe at the fact that Dave could do a split in those leather pants.

If you can't find it, be content that you know the truth. Fuck that guy at work.

J.R.V.A. 01-22-2004 12:51 PM

Yea, fuck him. This just makes me think of history though. I know for a fact they were there, and none of the Van Halen sites have it listed. So if you ask one of those so called experts if they were ever there, they will tell you they never played there. Just like he is telling me. I wonder how much more other stuff about history is wrong lol. Thanks guys

perripken 01-22-2004 08:35 PM

He's probably just jealous that you saw them in a small venue when they were new.... don't worry about it, and hey... even if you're not sure about it, you do remember going to a show and having an awesome time, right? There is value in that!

UPDATE:
Well the only thing I'm not sure of is the excat date. Mercury-hg was really helpful, found somone I did'nt even know that weas there. I have talked to two other people that were there also, First, my buddy that went with me, and I called the college and talked to a guy that works there, and he said he was a student at the time, and he went to the concert also. Then, I talked to a guy that was living there at the time, and he said he tried to go to the concert, and his parents wouldn't let him go, it was conference weekend(This is a utah mormom thing). He said he remembers it well. Then I talked to the library lady, she siad she would research it. She said if the microfilm had any articles on it, she would send them to me. So on it goes. It's kinda funny sometimes what gets somepeople going huh. I am on a mission lol.
I wonder if I get documented proof if the VH foroums will cahnge their schedule. Any way, if anyone else has any ideas, or comments , please post. Thanks all

Newest Update:

I went to a web group for Van Halen, and asked for any help. This is what I have recieved so far......

I've been gone for a week and am just going through old digests, so I
don't
know if this has been answered or not, but I am looking at my ticket
stub
for the Logan show and it was on March 31, 1979. If memory serves
correct
... it was pouring rain that night and a long drive up to Logan from
Provo.
But entirely well worth it. The support act was some guys named the
Granati
Brothers, or something like that. I believe this was Van Halen's first
appearance in Utah -- but at the least, their first headlining show
there.
I have noticed that this date is not on the official tour list on the
VH
site, for whatever reason. But that is definitely the date.

I think VH also played the Salt Palace in late '79 -- but for some
reason I
couldn't make the show. I remember being disappointed that I couldn't
go.

Hope that helps,

Doug

My reply:YES YES YES!!!!!!! Is there any possible way I could
pay you to send me a copy of your ticket stub? I have
a big thing going on here at my work, and no one will
beleive me if I don't have some kind of actual proof.
Thank you very much, Steve

And his:
What's your address? Let me explain what I've got and you tell me the
best
way I can help you. But rest assured, whatever you've got going at
work, I
have plenty of proof of this concert so you will have no problem
setting
the record straight!

I actually did a story in our newspaper a while back on the business
side
of concerts, rising ticket prices, etc. As a backdrop to that article,
I
ran copies of a bunch of ticket stubs I had collected over the years --
and
of course, I included the Van Halen one from Logan ... and it is in a
very
prominent position and it clearly shows the date, cost, place, etc. I
could
send you a copy of the article in the mail, and you could show them the
stub. Or if you prefer, I could try and scan it in at home and e-mail
it to
you.

I also have a handful of black and white photos a friend of mine took
at
the show. We were right on the floor, he was taking a photo class in
college, and we reprinted a bunch of cool pics.

I also have a tour program from that night and the set list.

Let me know how I can help.

Doug

That Van Halen show has always been one of my favorites, all these
years.
Thanks everyone, for your time and comments.

Ahhh, a happy ending always makes me cry. :) Good work, Sherlock! Keep us updated when you get the stub and how that dick at work reacts. :)

Latest Update: THIS IS GOOD!!!
A friend of mine belongs to a Van Halen Forum. He has been asking questions, and last night, he recieved a couple of responses from people that were on tour with them back then. They told him that even that early in their carrers, there was infighting going on. Eddie thought it was his band, and he wanted everything done his way. David was more into the buisness side, and he was into pulling in the dollars, or so this is what I have heard. Regardless of that, or whatever the real reason might be, Eddie did'nt want to play Logan, and 2 other concerts, 1 in Montana, and one in Reno. The Logan one was March 31st 1979, The other two dates I'm not sure of. Anyway, as Eddie owns the Van Halen name, he says what goes into the official books, and web sites. Hence no mention of the Logan concert. So there you have it. Pretty funy huh? Thanks guys
