Cool. thanks for the link...
I must say, I didn't know what to expect from this. I did like it, though. Good vocals, easy to listen to... very "metropolitan", if you know what I mean. Actually, I don't even know what I mean. Sassy lyrics, cute back-up vocals, and fun sounds in the background make this a very listenable selection. I can see this one coming on the stereo at a party, and eventually half the party's stopped talking and starts listening. Can't beat that.

Cool. Really neat.

Next up: In Out, by Alarmbell

I just want to point out that this is one of my favorite threads EVER.
thank you all.

Sion 03-07-2004 11:00 AM

"In Out," Alarmbell: I dont have much to say about this song, as I only listened to it once. Suffice it to say that I really dislike this type of stuff. Now, thats primarily a subjective response, as opposed to objective criticism. By which I mean to say that I dont think its bad music, just completely NOT my style. I found it irritating to listen to and couldnt wait for it to end. At first, I liked the idea of the heavy fuzztone on the bass (you almost never hear that) but by the end, even that had grown wearisome. Perhaps its just me, but it felt like the fuzzy bassline set up an expectation (of something heavier and/or more chaotic to come) that the song never delivered.

next up: Not Now John, from Pink Floyd's The Final Cut

hawkeye 03-08-2004 10:20 PM

Not Now John:
I rather liked it. I am a rather big fan of pink floyd, but I hadn't heard this one before. There was something about that seemed odd, for a PF song at least, if just felt different.
That being said, kick ass. I liked the vocals especially.
That one's sticking around for a while.

next brave soul in line gets to try Nightwish::End of All Hope

(and seriously, check out a few of their albums, they have some great range, as far a styles go)

Chingal0 03-09-2004 01:23 PM

Nightwish. I have heard them before, and they are real good. This song is excellent.. it starts out with a slightly mellow rock beat with what sounds like a choir singing the lyrics, then the instrumentals step up and it sounds like a speedmetal song with amazing female vocals. Nice little guitar solo near the end to boot. Good song.

Next - Between the Buried and Me - Shevanel Cut a Flip

I think that your reaction to the song is primarily due to the fact that the Final Cut (and thus this song) is more a Roger Waters album with PF as the backup band than it is a true Floyd album. If you listen to the album in its entirety, I think you'll find it is much more like Water's solo work than the rest of the Floyd catalog.

in any case, as you said, it definitely does KICK ASS!

monkeydriven 04-12-2004 10:41 AM

Have heard some other songs by them. Not a bad band, but not something I would regularly listen to. The guitar and drums sound a little to 'heavy metalish" and the lead singer sounds like he's pushing for a Danzig-like sound....7 out of 10 for what it is....

Next person take: Dahlia Seeds - Butterfly Kick (www.dahliaseeds.com)

Chingal0 04-13-2004 01:11 AM

Gah, my post got erased when I clicked another link...

Anyways, Bad vocals, emphasis on instramentals instead of vocals, and rightfully so. Interesting lyrics, interesting sound. Not something I would listen to or reccomend.

The Agony Sceen - Habeas Corpus

KWSN 04-15-2004 08:01 PM

hmmmmm, very good drumline, nice guitar riff too. Vocals are very death-metally, remind me of Black Dahlia Murder. something i would listen to again.

The Rapture - Olio

FoolThemAll 04-16-2004 10:27 AM

The Rapture - Olio

Hmm...it's decent and definitely listenable, but I dislike the techno edge it has. I prefer the other few songs I've heard by this band, particularly "Sister Savior", which sounds much less techno-ish to me. Another part of it is that the song doesn't seem to 'build' very much....that's probably the wrong word, but I mean that it doesn't become any more interesting as it progresses.

I pick what I view as the only great song off the new Travis album...

Travis - Happy to Hang Around

Chingal0 04-18-2004 12:57 AM

Travis - Happy to hang around

Uh, intresting song. Pretty mellow, easy-going sounding and decent vocals. The lyrics are kinda emo'ish altho not nearly as bad as others. Not a bad song, just something I wouldn't personally listen to.

Chingy - Holidae Inn (specifically the Ludacris part)

Paradise Lost 04-18-2004 12:31 PM

Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne
Yes - Roundabout
Eagles - The Long Run ... or Take it to the Limit

KWSN 04-18-2004 12:53 PM

Paradise Lost, I think you're missing the point...

you're supposed to listen to the previous poster's music selection and critique it, then post a selection of your own for the next poster.

Chingal0's song is:

Chingy - Holiday Inn (specifically the Ludacris part)

continue

PulpMind 04-18-2004 10:46 PM

Chingy - Holidae Inn (feat Snoop and Ludacris)

I'm not sure how to pay attention to the Ludacris part, because I don't listen to rap. So, this review is going to be a bit one-sided.
I do listen to quite a bit of hip hop, though, so take that as you may.

So I hate this song. fuck this shit. complete shit. Horrible, redundant, pointless lyrics. Destructive. Degenerate. Look how it's making me talk! I'm an nice boy from Ohio, and now I'm filled with bitch'n'ho. Even as far as booty rap goes, it's not all that amuzing. It's not that funny, it's not even really fun. It's just there. and it stinks. like shit... Oh, let's see how many pointless things we can say as fast as possible to make it sound like we're actually rapping about something. Holiday inn. Booty. big fuckin whoop WHOOP.
I like snoop sometimes, but he sounds like a lame ass fucker at the end of this drivel.
Production is shotty. Lame beats, nothing even remotely ingenuitive.
The engineering is top notch, of course. They can pay for that when this is the million dollar pop.
this song gets an F+
That said, I will suggest something that I think qualifies as good hip hop.

Immortal Technique - Obnoxious

Chingal0 04-20-2004 02:18 AM

Immortal Technique - Obnoxious

Weird lyrics, but they flow well. Interesting beat, kinda seems more playful for the song, but whatever. Man I hate rap music. He kinda sounds pissed at an ex or the world or something, not a bad song, just not my cup of tea.

The Red Chord - Dreaming in Dog Years

Chingal0 04-23-2004 01:52 AM

I can't do my own song people! Someone step up!

KWSN 04-23-2004 03:26 AM

I can't find it... have a link?

FoolThemAll 04-23-2004 06:07 AM

The Red Chord - Dreaming in Dog Years

Aaaah! Chaos and Cookie Monster vocals! The vocals immediately irked me, and this feeling did not pass. The song also didn't seem to flow well, it varied in structure throughout without any lead-ins to make sense of the changes. They've obviously got some level of talent with their instruments, but I just can't enjoy this.

Travis Morrison - The Word Cop

Free and legal mp3 can be found here:

http://www.travismorrison.com/

Chingal0 04-24-2004 01:53 AM

Yea, I'll start linking some of these since they are kinda hard to find sometimes.

Hahah yea, that Red Chord song makes no sense musically, but it is fucking great if you like that kind of music. They are extremely talented musicians, but it is a niche audience. I saw them last week and they were didn't fail to impress.

On to Travis Morrison - The Word Cop

Interesting song, Kinda sounds like hippy rock-n-roll. I didn't have to listen to it twice, but I was trying to zero in on the lyrics. It is like a political jam or something. Censorship issues etc. I'm not real sure. Haha, oh man. Definetly hippy rock-n-roll, but hey, it has it's audience. Not a bad song musically, upbeat and stuff, sounds good. Yarg.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Funeral Thirst

http://www.soundclick.com/util/strea...ID=803279&q=Hi

Link works for me, not sure if it will for everyone.

I would post a more obsure and better BDM song, but this one has a link, and.. yea.

mercury-hg 04-24-2004 08:05 PM

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say that chingal0 is a metalhead... ;-)

oddly enough "funeral thirst" was next on my playlist when i read the previous post. while BDM obviously rawk, i can only handle them in small doses. i like a bit more dynamic contrast in my metal, but then again i like heavy and fast. good stuff from such a young band (kinda funny that they look more like pasty and soft band nerds than members of a death metal band). anyway, sweet pick

here's mine:

The Black Keys - Busted

Sion 04-24-2004 09:16 PM

The Black Keys - Busted: seemed more of a song fragment (or an undeveloped demo) than an actual song to me. I liked the dirty blues riffage and the old school blues vocal sound, but found the rhythm section a bit pedestrian: not bad, just nothing particularly interesting going on there. I would guess that live, this "song" is used as the basis for an extended blues jam, and if that guess is correct, it would be something Id like to hear.

next up: Deodato - Superstrut

FoolThemAll 09-19-2004 09:33 AM

I'm gonna start this back up.

Deodato - Superstrut

Nice jazzy feel. Starts out enjoyably this way and continues in the same vein, though this vein never gets old. The variations just keep coming and succeed wonderfully in keeping the song fresh and interesting for all nine minutes of it. Nice one, thanks.

Next: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Me and Mia

Downloadable, free and legal, here:
http://www.lookoutrecords.com/sounds...hp3?bnd_id=355

The other songs available there are quality as well, some even better.

KWSN 09-20-2004 05:08 PM

So far I like the lead singer's voice, despite perhaps the slight unoriginality of it. Not exactly terribly innovative. However in this first mellow break the drum work is great, I'm quite impressed with it. This is pretty catchy. I would listen to it again. Nice upbeat feel. Reminds me of the kind of stuff I listened to incessantly a few years ago. Ooh, I like the reggae-ish guitars here. This is nice. Good stuff. Quite catchy and listenable. Thumbs up!

Next:

Hopesfall - The Bending (can be found here: http://www.trustkill.com/multimedia/sounds/)

Nafter 09-21-2004 11:44 AM

Hopesfall - the bending
Not bad, its music that makes me want to dance heh, not a massive fan of overly shouty lyrics, i prefer to hear at least some of whats said, and i find shouting to come out as the same "sound" when in songs such as this, but the instrumental side of it i like, its moving and interesting. The song seems to flow well and progresses from strong/heavy to less so, if there was less shouting id look for some more )

Ill go for
Aesop rock - no regrets,
listen to the lyrics, and try not to count out his unique voice straight away, for some it takes a while to get used to :)

Aesop Rock - No Regrets

beautiful song. The lady we might all think of as the sad desolate one, is, in fact, the one keeping true to her being, staying happy. Her dying line is great. Decent production, but it's the rhymes that shine through. Aesop has the unique quality of being fairly easy to understand.... I've always enjoyed Aesop Rock though never gone out of my way to own/download any. I will now.

keeping on the underground hip hop with good lyrics (serious or not).. I'm forcing out (and again, listen to what he's saying... also interesting to point out that he does all his own production work):

the point of this thread is to listen to what the last person suggested, write a review of it, THEN you can suggest a song for someone else to review (at which point they can then post a suggestion).
currently, the next song up is "The Childhood of a Leader" by the artist Cex.
listen to that, post a review, then you can suggest whatever you want, and someone will do the same.

ready, set, GO.

itch vaccine 09-23-2004 04:10 AM

wow PulpMind, darn hard to find that song.. link us up man :)

PulpMind 09-24-2004 04:09 AM

if you're on SlSk it shouldn't be too hard to find.. go into the "IDM" room (it's close to the top of the list) and do a search for the song in just the rooms you're in. that should get it.. I'm also on SlSk as PulpMind, so feel free to msg me for it =)
um, otherwise, I'll try to post it on a server..

tspikes51 09-24-2004 04:42 AM

Sorry, I didn't even know that my 1st post went through. I'll read more carefully next time.

Completely agreed on the Aesop Rock tune, by the way. Great song.

First two listens, I wasn't particularly interested. I let it sit for a matter of days, and now, listening to it for a third day, I'm definitely liking it. The rapping is smooth, clear, and very catchy. The noises at the beginning are a little annoying, but really minimally so. The theme doesn't seem to be innovative, but its presentation seems fresh. Fourth listen...really catchy rapping. Liking the use of pictures in the lyrics. Good one, thanks.

Next song: Brian Vander Ark - And Then You Went Away
Verve Pipe lead singer, off his solo album "Resurrection"

Got streaming for this one, but it's good streaming:
http://www.myspace.com/brianvanderark

costello 09-29-2004 12:51 AM

eh thought it was kinda bland, boring and repetitive. not much progression vocally or musically since verve pipe. but he has a very distinct voice, and takes me back to the freshmen days :). kk next to switch it up a lot listen to the title track off of these guys' newest album.

next song: the blood brothers - burn piano island, burn

the greatest lyrics ever, heres a link to them since i couldnt find anywhere to listen to the song itself. hope you like!

http://www.lyricsdownload.com/blood-...rn-lyrics.html

tspikes51 09-29-2004 10:34 AM

Whoa, I got a weird mental picture of that in my head, like a pink tropical island with a belly button, with a toucan and a red palm tree, all with cartoonish fire over it. Great lyrics! I think maybe it's talking about things seeming happy, but not being that way. At least that's how I deciphered it. I also got a mental sound of the song: extremely heavy, low, uncompressed guitar, lots of cymbals and yelling. I will have to investigate further.

Next song: Project 86 - Spy Hunter
