Most Nostalgic Songs for you

I had an interesting idea for this thread. What are the songs that give you the greatest sense of nostalgia, that just evoke memories or feelings from an old relationship, or event, or eve just a time in your life?

my biggest one is Semisonic's "Closing Time", it reminds me of this really melancholy, bittersweet time in my life a few years back.

James Taylor's "Lonseome Road" always gives me the warm fuzzies

how about you guys?

I can't bring myself to listen to 3 Doors Down's "Here Without You" because of the memories it brings back, regardless of it being my favorite song.

Puff Daddy, Faith Evans, et al's remake of "Every Breath You Take." I vividly remember listening to it come on the radio as I drove to my high school graduation.

Everclear - Santa Monica I remember listening to this while at a beach party when I lived in North Carolina. I was sitting in a lounge chair with a gorgeous woman that was too good for me drinking, talking, and watching the sun go down. I get the warm fuzzies every time I hear that song.

Time of My Life by Green Day. That song was everywhere in the Spring of 98 when I graduated high school and it was all over the Seinfeld series finale. I also associate My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion with alot of my high school dances.

"One More Astronaut" from I Mother Earth's "Scenery and Fish". That song and "It's the End of the World as We Know It" managed to become the "soundtrack" to my last semester of high school.

"Say yes" by Elliott Smith. The only CD I ever loaned to this girl I had a crush on for years, I gave her Either/Or hoping she'd latch onto those lyrics and she did. She loved it and made a huge deal about it. And then, weirdly, the last time I saw her after not ever getting together with her she was playing that CD in her car when we went out to eat lunch and catch up with each other's lives. That song always makes me think of my freshman year in college.

"I'd like your hair long" by HUM is another song that brings back serious nostalgia. My friends and I piled into the car back in high school and headed up to Portland to see HUM at La Luna. In the encore at the very end of the night, HUM played "I'd like your hair long" and somehow the middle of the floor cleared out and the 5 of us guys started little mosh pit (friendly really) and then the entire crowd around us joined in. That song embodied the whole experience of seeing my favorite band, and that brotherhood of being with good friends. All of those friendships have changed a lot since then, but that memory always reminds me of how things were.

I know now that I'll never be able to listen to Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. II without thinking of Janet. We just got that at Goodwill for $1 and it was really our first purchase together, and we spent that special night together with that music on under the red hues of her Christmas lights... a night I certainly will not forget.

That's also a standout album for me, 'cause it seems after i listened to that (in 2000), it broke any kind of mold or type of music i liked, so my mind was opened to all kinds of stuff after that. Great album as well (a steal for a buck ), i got it cause i liked the ambient music in Super Metroid on snes a little strange

the smashing pumpkins in general just brings me back to middle school/high school when i was obsessed with them.. and their songs really meant a lot to me.. they were a big part of me and how i defined myself back then.

No shit!! I almost wrote about that!! I saw Chris Cornell and that song blew me away... most memorable moment of seeing the man from what is still my favorite band of all time. His singing was so high, and there was this lady on the keys that harmonized with him... and damn, goosebumps for the whole song. I was right in the front, 10 feet away from him, staring up into his blacken eyes totally moved. A great day, to make up for never seeing Soundgarden before they broke up. Great memory, that song always brings me back!

It's amazing how songs can bring back a certain point in your life so clearly. I actually worte a paper on this topic once and got an A. There are so many for me but a few off the top of my head are:

Pearl Jam's "In my Tree" - When No Code first came out I was getting ready to go away to University and I clearly remember listening to this song as I was driving away from one of the best Labor Day Weekend parties at my cabin towards a new town where I knew exactly nobody.

Jimmy Buffett "One Particular Harbor" - This song and a lot of other Buffett songs remind me of driving to and from some ski hill with my dad. He was always listening to Jimmy and therfore I was too. I love it though. A lot of Jimmy's songs are starting to take on new meanings to me though since listening to them while sailing in the caribbean. They just fit so well with sailing there.

Ben Harper "Forever" - This song easily brings me back to the first time that my girlfriend left for school across the country. I was listening to a lot of Ben Harper around then and this song stands out. It was the same way with her too cause she was listening to it on a cd that I made for her. We're using it for our first dance at our wedding in June.

I better cut it off there since I could go on and on about this topic and I'm stuck at home, sick so I have nothing better to do.

This thread really says alot about when you grew up.

Garth Brooks "The Dance" -the last song played at every school dance in West Texas for more than a decade now.

Peter Gabriel "In your eyes" cheesey first girl memories from the song and the movie Say Anything.

"I'll be there for you" the song from Friends - which I dont like as such, but it just always reminds me of someone very special to me,

"Saturday Night" - Whigfield - a crappy dance/pop track, that was played to death it seems like the summer I was 16 and I just remember it and think of parties and disco's and the way things where back then

"Fuck Tha Police" - NWA - I remember hearing this song when I was 10 or 11, and just being blown away - it takes me back to being younger, angrier, and not having made my compromise with the way the world is yet.

"Flowers for the Dead" - Cuban Link - always leaves a slight lump in my throat - the DVD that came out after Pun died was very hard to watch and showed a lot of flaws in his character and a lot of things in him I couldnt admire, but the music industry will never be the same - Pun was the greatest lyricist, the greatest rapper, to me at the age Capital Punishment came out it was the most influential record Ive ever heard - it was so sad that he died the way he did, even if he never really could drag himself clear of his wrong beginnings.

Anything from the mid to late 80's pretty much takes me back to my high school days.

(All of the 20-somthings at once just went "God you're old")

My best friend and I the summer before our senior year used to just go on road trip where we would hop in the car and just drive...anywhere.

We would almost always bring along Boston's "Don't Look Back" & "Third Stage" Triumph's "Thunder Seven" and Van Halen's "5150"

Hearing songs from any of those albums gives me great memories.

the soundtrack to my first time was modest mouse - dramamine

the first time i had sex with the girl who would one day be my fiance was at the drive-in - napoleon solo

the best sex i ever had (also with her ) was the cure - a forest

all those songs really get me now...

also the silverchair cd "freak show" is just unlistenable for me because i listened to it a lot during a really fucked-up time in my life and i get flung back into it when i listen...

Hmm, I was going to put together a mix of old girlfriend songs at some point.

Lesse, pre girlfriends: For some reason, any song of Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles always reminds me of Staying up all night and writing D&D adventures on an old Apple //e in my parent's basement when I was in High School.

Jethro Tull - Something on the Move reminds me of the basement I lived in Junior year of college. Slat floored and smelling of rot.

Journey, Don't stop Believing reminds me of my first real crush, and Grateful Dead - Hell in a Bucket always reminds me of her bitchy friend who I also had a bit of a crush on.

REM, Flowers of Guatemala reminds me of the first girl whose shirt I ever got off.

Michael Penn - No Myth, another girl. Long legged bird. Dated my little brother for a while. I scared her, but I really liked her a lot.

If I live to be 1000, Roxy Music - More than This will remind me of my wife.

Pretty much all the songs that were in the cartoon.

When I was a wee kid, I got to watch the cartoon on a borrowed VCR, and it warped my mind for sure. I loved it so much, I remember the experience vividly.

(Plus it was illegal to own a VCR in the Soviet Union, so I bet my parents got a rush out of it too )

The entire Issues album by Korn brings back memories of a relationship I had about 4 years ago. Pretty much all the music that I started listening to then still brings back memories, and a sort of "feeling". It's awesome how music can just make you feel like you did at a certain point in time like that, it's an amazing things. Also the album 13 Ways to Bleed On Stage by Cold brings back a lot of rather unhappy memories, but I still listen to it because well, one it's good music, and two it's comforting.

Thrice - Illusion of Safety

This album pretty much illustrates my senior year in high school. My girlfriend (at the time) bought it for me, it was the last copy at Tower. It was cracked, but I didn't care. I'd listen to it during class and on the bus during baseball. I can't think of a more nostalgic feeling than my senior year, listening to this album in the hallways, holding her hand, in the bus, on the way home from a victory, with the sun setting into dusk. My friends at the time (no longer friends now) will still agree, this is undoubtedly the best album we've ever owned. Uh-oh, my loser alarm is going off. *End post*

Ben Harper - Another Lonely Day. sometimes i get a little choked up hearing it. for some reason it just has some meaning for me right now.

Yes indeed, I'm alone again.
And here comes emptiness crashing in.
It's either love or hate,
I can't find in between,
'cause I've been with witches and I've been with a queen.

It wouldn't have worked out anyway.
So now it's just another lonely day.
Further along we just may.
But for now it's just another lonely day.

Wish there was something now I could say or do.
I can resist anything but the temptation from you.
But I'd rather walk alone than chase you around.
I'd rather fall myself than let you drag me on down.

It wouldn't have worked out anyway.
And now it's just another lonely day.
Further along we just may.
But for now, it's just another lonely day.

Yesterday seems like a life ago,
'cause the one I love today, I hardly know,
You I held so close in my heart, Oh dear,
Grow further from me with every fallen tear.

It wouldn't have worked out anyway.
So now it's just another lonely day.
Further along we just may.
But for now it's just another lonely day.
For now it's just another lonely day.
For now it's just another lonely day.

"Make It Real," by the Jets...I remember it playing EVERYWHERE the summer before second grade. My mom had recently gotten remarried, and I had a new stepsister who I thought was just beyond cool, mainly based on the fact that she was 12. Later, there was a divorce and some bad feelings all around, but for that summer, everything was pretty much perfect.

"Head Over Feet" by Alanis Morrissette (sp?)...I can't even listen to that one anymore. Reminds me of a guy I had a huge crush on in high school, and all the angsty feelings that went with the crush.

"Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers...first love, that was a fun time.

"I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues" by Elton John...reminds me of when my husband left for Basic. It described how I felt perfectly.

"I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor...some friends and I made a video to that song, it was hilarious...all of just dancing around, singing along, and generally acting goofy. Good times.
