Any cover of 99 Red Balloons, its a very good song when it isn't so slow and 80's
The Pumpkin's cover of Landslide
Donkey Punch covering Bon Jovi's Livin on a Prayer (find Donkey Punch: Live at the Blind Pig on emusic, you wont regret it)
And finally, my most recent favorite, the Foo Fighters cover of Darling Nikki.

I'll save the PJ for last ...

I love cover songs - nothing's more exciting than hearing a band's take on an older song. The ones I can think of that I really really enjoy are:

"Voodoo Chile" by Stevie Ray Vaughan (Jimi Hendrix)
"Little Wing" by Stevie Ray Vaughan (Jimi Hendrix)
"Hurt" by Johnny Cash (NIN)
"Black" by Aaron Lewis (Pearl Jam)
"Sober" by Staind (Tool)
"Diary of a Love Song" by A Perfect Circle (Ozzy/The Cure hybrid song)
"Love Song" by 311 (The Cure)
"Interstate Love Song" by Hootie and the Blowfish (Stone Temple Pilots)
"War Pigs" by Faith No More (Black Sabbath)
"Easy" by Faith No More (Lionel Richie)
"Faith" by Limp Bizkit (George Michael)
"Behind Blue Eyes" by Limp Bizkit (The Who)
"Another Brick in the Wall" by Korn (Pink Floyd)
"Lowrider" by Korn (War)
"Wish" by Linkin Park (NIN)
"Take On Me" by Reel Big Fish (A-Ha)

Most of the songs that Pearl Jam covers sound REALLY REALLY good -

"Crazy Mary" by Victoria Williams
"Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young
"Baba O'Reilly" by The Who
"The Kids Are Alright" by The Who
"Fortunate Son" by Credence Clearwater Revival
"I am a Patriot" by Steven Van Zandt
"I Got You" by Split Enz
"Interstellar Overdrive" by Pink Floyd
"Last Kiss" by Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers
"Gimme Some Truth" by John Lennon
"Know Your Rights" by The Clash

Damn, that was a really long list.

I know most people haven't heard it, but April Wine does an excellent cover of the Spencer Davis Group's "I'm a Man".

Molly Hatchet does a good job with "Freebird" as well.

Supernaut - Orig. Black Sabbath covered by 1000 Homo DJs (the Ogre vocals as opposed to the Reznor vocals although to be honest there wasn't much difference).

Solsbury Hill - Orig. Peter Gabriel covered by Sarah McLachlan (pretty much any cover by her).

Angie - Orig. Rolling Stones covered by Tori Amos (I only heard it live though. I'd love to find a recording of it).

In reply to Glytch:

What kind of cover would you like to hear of Paint it Black? I worked in a band that did a latin/blues version of it that worked pretty well.

Korn's greatest hits album released today. Korn covers Pink Floyd's: Another Brick in the Wall (part 1 2 3) on this album. I have to say I was really impressed with the song. The song had a strong Pink Floyd feeling to it but with Jon Davis's awesome throat ripping vocals !

Another note... It is the first korn studio recording that had a guitar solo in a song.

Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready covering Dylan's Masters of War
-come to think of it any cover Pearl Jam did, except for Last Kiss. Oh, and for the people that didn't know who originally recorded it, it was J. Frank Wilson and the Caveliers.

Definitely check out any covers that Pearl Jam has done they are really good. They do some great Johnny Cash songs as well a a great cover of Baba Orielly (teenage wasteland) done by The Who. Check them out - Trust me

Jack Johnson - A Pirate Looks at 40 (Jimmy Buffett)
This actually hasn't been released on a studio album, but you can download it free from Jack Johnson's website. (Yes, I know it was on The September Sessions soundtrack, but it's the same version that you can download, which was recorded from a KFOG concert back in 2001 or 2002).

Dave Matthews Band - Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
The best version is from the Golden Gate Park concert on September 12, 2004, when Carlos Santana joins them on stage. I've been listening to Dave cover this for years trying to figure out what was missing, and it turns out it's Santana. (I have a torrent of this concert, if you're interested find me in the IRC channel or send me a private message).

Gipsy Kings: Hotel California (The Eagles)
Done with a flamenco/rumba twist. Sung mostly in spanish, with a little bit of english in the chorus. This is the song that plays in the background of The Big Lebowski when Jesus rolls.

I have other favorites, but they've already been covered on this list.

Oh, the worst cover ever has to be the Madonna version of "American Pie." Blech.

- Johnny Cash covering Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" - intense and chilling.
- Human Drama covering Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - the only JD cover ever that exceeds the original.
- Unto Ashes covering "Don't Fear The Reaper" - totally goth, utterly different than the original, and actually hauntingly beautiful.
- Faith and the Muse covering Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" - also better than the original.
- Purr Machine's cover of "Send Me An Angel" - Betsy Martin's voice is incredible.
- Apocalyptica's cover of "Enter Sandman" - so wrong it's right.
- KMFDM covering Madonna's "Material Girl" - same as above!
- Inkubus Sukkubus's cover of "Paint It Black" - goth band, but a pretty straightforward cover, with great female vocals.
I could go on all day........
