David Lee Roth's version of the Beach Boys' "California Girls" and whoever's "Just a Gigalo"

G-N-R's version of the Stones' "Sympathy For the Devil"

Rod Stewart's cover of the Beatles' "In My Life"

and Ben Folds cover of Bitches ain't shit

KoRn - Another Brick In The Wall (part 1, 2, 3). By far the best cover I have heard in a long time, besides Jonny Cash doing NIN's Hurt

I have a four-way tie between:

"Nativity In Black" - Ozzy and Primus
"Mony Mony" - Billy Idol
"You Really Got Me" - Van Halen
"Hard To Handle" - The Black Crowes

Grasshopper Green 07-01-2005 12:59 PM

I like Jimi Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower" better than Dylan's version (shhh...don't let my dad hear that!!).

I also like "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam better than the original, but I don't know who did the first one.

Johnny Pyro 07-07-2005 12:57 PM

Johnny Cash(any cover he does)

Slayer(Born to be wild,Steppenwolf)

Bowling for soup(I ran,Flock of Seagulls)

iwhore 07-17-2005 02:59 PM

"My Sharona" by The Number Twelve Looks Like You(The Knack)
"Maniac" by Evergreen Terrace (no clue about who was orig)

"Under Pressure" by The Blood Brothers (Queen)
"Paint It Black" by The Vines (Rolling Stones)

There is a cover of Build me up Buttercup on the mallrats soundtrack that is great and a cover of go your own way on the clerks soundtrack that is good as well. I am too lazy to look up who did the covers...

paddyjoe 07-21-2005 03:37 AM

Walking after Midnight by Madeleine Peyroux

CandyLover 07-21-2005 08:08 AM

The Cure - The world in my eyes

Grasshopper Green 07-21-2005 09:16 AM

Oh, Dwight Yoakam does a really good cover of Suspicious Minds...better than the original IMO.

A little British goth band called Inkubus Sukkubus does a kickin version of Paint It, Black. PM me if you'd like a copy, it's pretty hard to find.

I've always loved the 7 Seconds version of 99 Red Balloons.
Also love Stevie Ray Vaughn's cover of Little Wing.
And finally, I have to throw in Tori Amos version of '97 Bonnie and Clyde. It's creepy as hell.

I am a big U2 fan, and i really like their cover of Paint it Black, as well as their cover of Dancin' Barefoot ( Patti Smith ), and their take on the Beatles happiness is a warm gun.

Oh yeah also thier Pop Muzik (M)

And I am kinda surprised that no one mentioned of of the highest rated covers of all-time. Sinead O'coonor's Nothing Compares 2 U is a Prince song.

I've never heard that one (he's country, right?) ...

but I've always liked the Fine Young Cannibals version.

... speaking of covers, on the new Fear Factory album, they cover
Killing Joke's Millenium and U2's I Will Follow.

I like the originals, and FF covers them well enough (still deciding how well, needs more listens).

I think I have a new favorite--Children of Bodom covering "Oops!...I Did It Again"--you haven't heard a Britney song until you've heard one with a double kick and Alexi Laiho taking over on lead vocals.

Honorable mention goes to Dream Theater for Best Cover Usage in Medleys and Bridges ("In the Flesh", "Starship Trooper", "The Rover", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Have a Cigar", etc.) and Metallica for Most Improved Covers ("Breadfan" and "Turn the Page").

Stompy 11-26-2005 09:35 PM

Lately I've been listening to Tool's cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter".

Hoooooooly hell it is damn good. I'd have to say this now takes top place over any and all covers I've ever heard.

thespian86 12-03-2005 08:18 PM

Wonderwall - Ryan Adams (Originally done by Oasis)

We Will Become Silhouettes - The Shins (originally done by The Postal Service)

High Fidelity - Death Cab For Cutie (originally by Elvis Costello) ... I actually like the original more but they do a stellar job

Anxst 12-03-2005 09:17 PM

I can't believe that when I last posted I left out Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". Incredible song.

Franconian 12-04-2005 04:27 AM

Linkin Park - "Dust in the wind"(live) covered from Kansas

shadowfiend 12-04-2005 09:18 AM

Johnette Napolitano and Danny Lohner's version of Coldplay's The Scientist. It's way better than Coldplay's.

meembo 12-06-2005 04:07 AM
