Just a few off the top of my head:
Built to Spill covering Velvet Underground's "What goes on" Bjork and PJ Harvey doing the Stones' "Satisfaction" Pixies covering JaMC's "Head On" Ben Kweller - "Ice Ice Baby" Grr, suddenly I can't think of the ones I had in mind when I started reading this thread... |
Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" is a classic, obviously.
I think most Leonard Cohen covers are leaps and bounds better than the original Cohen recordings, particularly because he is such an amazing poet with such a godawful voice. Jeff Buckley does "Hallelujah" with the best of them... I also heard a recording of Buckley doing Dylan's "Mama You've Been on My Mind," which was gold. Haha, I always found Matchbox 20's version of "Time After Time" (Lauper) to be at least mildly entertaining as well. |
That nirvana cover is amazing.
|
Zac Maloy -- Okie from Muskogee ---- it's from his latest album "Saturday is Gone" as a hidden track, #13....damn it's good.

I Love cohen's voice! It's what makes the tune. But then I like neil young's voice too, so I guess I'm no judge of voice character! My fav cover has been Let's Spend the Night Together by David Bowie (Aladdin Sane). |
Almost every cover ever done by the Pixies... My current favourite of theirs is Neil Young's Winterlong.
|
I have several favorites, but since it's fresh in my mind (due to listening to it currently), I'd have to say the Minibosses "Castlevania 3", "Ninja Gaiden", "Punch-Out!" and "Mega Man 2" medleys.
Dorky? Yes. But it rocks so hard that you can't deny it, even if you never played the video games as a kid. |
Boys of summer - The Ataris
|
Ben Harper, covering Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing"
|
Eric Clapton covering "I Shot the Sheriff" introduced me to reggae.
The Allman Brothers Band covering "Stormy Monday" & "Statesburo Blues" introduced me to the blues. Stevie Ray Vaughan covering "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" showed me that it was possible to improve on a Hendrix tune. |
Nirvana - Plateau - The Meat Puppets
Nirvana - Oh, Me - The Meat Puppets Nirvana - Lake Of Fire - The Meat Puppets |
Tainted Love - Marilyn Manson
|
Three of my favorites...
Yet another vote for Me First and the Gimme Gimmes..."Nobody Does It Better" than they do ;) "All Along The Watchtower" by Kelly Richey (actually improvising on Hendrix's adaptation) And Dwight Yoakam did a helluva job with "Suspicious Minds" |
Ray Charles - Over the Rainbow, originally by Judy Garland
Ray Charles - Eleanor Rigby, originally by the Beatles Rolling Stones - Time Is On My Side, originally by Irma Thomas Kingsmen - Louie Louie, originally by Richard Berry |
ziggy stardust by bauhaus originally done by bowie
|
Got a couple or three or 4...
Crazy... Patsy Cline original by Willie Nelson All along the Watch Tower.... Hendrix... original by Bob Dylan I Put a Spell on You... Manson... original by Nina Simone (I think) The Passenger.... Michael Hutchense (INXS singer) original by Iggy Pop GREAT SONG! |
Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies (original by Velvet Underground)
Yesterday - Boys II Men (original by some band from England I can't recall) Blue Monday - Orgy (original by New Order) Planet Caravan - Pantera (original by Black Sabath) I think I heard it said once that Yesterday is the most covered song ever. I must admit the Boys II Men a cappella version is one of my guilty pleasures. |
Oh yeah...one more I didn't see mentioned:
Lyle Lovett's "Stand By Your Man" |
Crowded House - Tempted
Hands down my favorite. |
Jack Black doing Marvin Gaye's Lets Get It On. From the ending of High Fidelity. Damn that is a hot track.
|
Johnny Cash, I won't back Down
|
I like a bunch of cover songs.. here's 2 that I think are well done:
Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons The Atari's - Boys of Summer I also like Marilyn Manson's covers, either of Sweet Dreams, Personal Jesus or Tainted Love. I dont know why, they're just fun to listen to. |
Flunk - Blue monday
|
This one always makes me smile.
NWA's Straight Outta Compton http://www.ninagordon.com/audio/stra...ttacompton.mp3 |
Evanescence - Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana)
Cradle of Filth - Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden) Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love (Soft Cell) |
Hey - I gotta second this, even if it's adding little to the discussion.
Man. I first heard that song in a mixed goth/punk/industrial type nightclub. It'll never enjoy it quite as much as that first time (dancing, slightly drunk etc) - but it's still a classic. I'm glad somebody else enjoys the song too. |
I had to list three.
"Here comes the sun" - sung in a very slow melancholy way. Almost sarcastic but without the whine. Some british artist. Wish somebody could find that one for me. "Hey Joe" - done by Body Count (Jimi Hendrix tribute) is interesting. It comes out wonderful with a slightly harder interpretation. "Rocket Man" - Kate Bush |
schneider tm vs. kpt. michi.gan - the light 3000
if you cant tell (and i dont blame you) it's a cover of the smiths song "the light." |
I think mine is No Quarter, originally done by Led Zeppelin, covered by Tool. I think Tool took it and made it even better than the original, which is an amazing feat.
|
The world in my eyes- the cure.. oringally made by depeche mode.
|
Little Wing by SRV
Down With The Sickness by Richard Cheese -Mikey |
I hear Sarah McLachlan sing The Beatles' "Blackbird" and Peter Gabriel's "Salisbury Hill" live on Thursday night, and both rocked my socks.
The Postal Service's version of "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins and All Saints' version of "Under The Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers are also up there. |
The Sundays "Wild Horses"
Took me the longest time to realize the Stones originally recorded it |
dynamite hack - boys in the hood (not sure who sang it maybe NWA)\
phish - gin and juice |

The Atari's did an amazing job covering that song. :) Great choice. |
Up until recently i never liked any cover song. Then The Used and My Chemical Romance did an awesome job on "Under Pressure" origanally by Queen and David Bowie.
|
If you haven't heard Paint it Black by Gob (originally done by The Rolling Stones).. you're missing out.. PM me for it or contact me on AIM. :) It's good times.

Best cover that I have heard in long time. revitalized the song, and it's actually listenable now. How about Will Ferril and the Newsanchors covering Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight"? I just saw it on Much Music, and it is a bonus video at the end of the movie "anchorman". |

In all honesty, I didn't think that was them that really sang it, I thought they were just lip synching. :P |
