Rolling Stone picks the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

Here it is:

http://www.rollingstone.com/features...n.asp?pid=2164

Personally, I think they went with some odd choices in some parts. And I'm not sure if I'd call Sgt. Pepper's the best album of all time. But I'll go with it.

boxcarracer277 11-30-2003 04:38 PM

I could never create a list like that. . .but Sgt. Pepper's isn't even my favorite beatles album. I can't choose a favorite. . .but sgt. pepper's isn't really up there for me.

sailor 11-30-2003 07:49 PM

I would have to vote for Led Zeppelin IV. I cant believe they put Led Zeppelin I before IV--it was definitely good, but IV is the definitive album.

Jadey 11-30-2003 08:36 PM

ARRRRGGGGGH! Killing me!!! Dark Side Of The Moon #43!!!

Okay, so I'm not even going to look at the rest of that shit list!

Batman976 11-30-2003 08:53 PM

I would really like to know what criteria they used to compile this list. Do they say anywhere?

MSD 11-30-2003 11:48 PM

I got it the other day. My brother and I just sat there mocking their choices for twenty minutes. Some were good, some were way off.

KWSN 12-01-2003 07:28 AM

MOTHERFUCKING PET SOUNDS!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

The Beach Boys are one of the most pathetically overrated groups ever. Every fucking song is the same, and all those songs are Chuck Berry ripoffs. Their lyrics aren't even clever. This fucking kills me. Horrid.

ledhead 12-01-2003 09:36 PM

man, i cant even believe they attempted to rate something like this. it is just too difficult to declare an album, the greatest album of all time. 2 reasons. it has not been all time, and until it has then you can make a list. it is also way to subjective. everybody is going to have a different opinion. and believe me i have my differences with that list.

i mean come on having 4 beatles albums in the top ten and not having a zeppelin album until 29.

i all have to say is they could have done a better job. but why did they even attempt it. whatever.

I got this directly from the magazine.
"...Rolling Stone polled a blue-ribbon body of rock & roll stars and authorities and asked them to pick their top 50 albums in order of preference. The 273 voters spanned every decade and genre of popular music, from the 1950s to the present, including Beck, U2 guitarist the Edge, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore of the Doors, Fats Domino, Jackson Browne, Art Garfunkel, Flea and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Britney Spears, Metallica's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Missy Elliott and folk patriarch Pete Seeger. Among the top behind-the-scenec figures: David Geffen, Warner Music Group chairman and CEO Roger Ames, produced Rick Rubin and seminal session musicians Hal Blaine (the Beach Boys, Phil Spector) and James Burton (Elvis Presley, Rick Nelson)..."

"The ballots were scored by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young and overseen by the Rolling Stone editors. We assigned 100 points for each first-place vote, 50 points for each second-place vote, 33-1/3 points for each third-place vote, and so on, down to 2 points for each fiftieth-place vote. We then ranked albums appearing on at least five ballots."

I remember the first time Rolling Stone used the internet for polling "regular" people about their favorite musicians, and Backstreet Boys won artist of the year.

TheClarkster 12-01-2003 11:13 PM

So where were Tom Petty and Deep Purple? I'm sure there were others missing that I can't think of.

PeaceFrog 12-02-2003 08:55 PM

Wow, so many missing. Sgt.Pepper's is definitely not the best Beatles album, while the Beatles should be #1, i don't think it should be Sgt.Pepper. That is definitely an "interesting" list to say the least...

Kaos 12-02-2003 09:13 PM

I'm not even going to bother looking at that list. I know I will only get pissed off with their choices.

JohnnyRock 12-03-2003 06:53 AM

not going to look at anymore than the fop 100...when Zepplin doesn't show up until #29 you know there is a problem...and Nevermind--Every Metallica Album is better than that overrated poece of crap!

OFKU0 12-04-2003 10:03 AM

Now this is very funny. But of course you can't make everyone happy. Argueably one could have at least replaced 2 of the Beatles top 10 spots with Led Zeppelin, The Who,Deep Purple,Janis Joplin, The Doors,Van Halen,Queen,Black Sabbath to say the least.

The Clash I don't think so. Perhaps if Rolling Stone looked at innovators instead of immitators they would have picked the Sex Pistols.

And Bob Dylan getting 2 nods in the top 10 is the funniest thing I've seen all day. Bob Dylan is the most overated piece of shit so-called living legend ever. Back to the innovation rather than imitation.Toss Bob Dylan out and give people like Woodie Guthrie and Pete Seger credit.Afterall that's who Dylan ripped off under the guise of originality.

my thoughts exactly...

It looks to me like there were some beetles fans making this list

rockzilla 12-04-2003 06:14 PM

You're never going to be able to please everybody with a list like that. There's no quantitative way to measure how much something rocks (although if there was I say we name the unit of measurement 'The Hendrix').

And, from anleja's post, why the hell did they ask Britney Spears? What does she know about music?

essendoubleop 12-04-2003 08:32 PM

Rolling Stone ain't shit. Wannabes.

BLASPHEMY! BLASPHEMY! How can you say that? "Pet Sounds" should be number one.

But of course you're entitled to your opinion. So I won't say anymore abou....no...I ca.....I must correct horribly incorrect statement

BLASPHEMY! PET SOUNDS IS AN AWESOME ALBUM!

...

archer2371 12-05-2003 08:08 AM

Rolling Stone can't pick anything for shit, you remember the 100 greatest guitarists? Yeah, Kurt Cobain was number 12 or 13, yeah, they've lost all of my respect.

Spektr 12-05-2003 08:29 AM

Radiohead's OK Computer is number 162???!?!?! What the fuck? Is this some kind of joke? OK Computer contains absolutely every aspect of a perfect album and deserves to be at least in the top 5. That's ridiculous

Kurt Cobain a great guitar player? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. If that's the case I am the greatest guitar player too live EVER.

anti fishstick 12-05-2003 01:00 PM

i hate these lists because everything is so subjective and claiming these albums as the "best" is all opinion, not fact. i just don't think it's very substantial at all.

that's why i refuse to click the link :P

I think this was their reasoning behind picking Sgt. Pepper's as number 1. It broke so many boundaries and turned so many heads, its combined innovation and musical merit makes it rank first.

wilbjammin 12-13-2003 03:29 PM

Soundgarden - Superunknown - #336

Took long enough...

Three of Eminem's albums made it above that.

My bias says "boo" to pushing Soundgarden so low.

I'll second that.

I don't know why people still attempt to make these "greatest ever" lists. Maybe it's just to tweak people out and get them pissed about some of the rankings, because you know if you're thinking "how the hell did this album get on here" that you'll read through the rest of the list looking for other albums to bitch about.

The majority of these lists seem to be just rehashes of other ones too. They pick the 20 or so best albums ever, which consist mainly of the Beatles and Dylan's output from the 60s, randomly assign numbers to them, and throw in some other "essential" albums like Pet Sounds and something by the Clash.

What really got me about RS's list this year was how they included the new No Doubt album as an essential. What!!?!!?!

lions20 12-31-2003 12:11 PM

They have Led Zep rated too low.

loganmule 01-01-2004 12:10 AM

Obviously too subjective to come up with a consensus on which 500 albums belong, much less the order of them. Still, it's worth going thru the list to see if you've overlooked something worth including in your music library.
