Whats Your Favorite Christmas Music?

I could not find a thread about this so here goes.

Right now my favorite christmas music is Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Orchestral and choral elements complement the powerful guitar work their is nothing quite like it IMO.

boxcarracer277 11-30-2003 04:33 PM

This probably isn't what you mean. . .but I just make mixtapes of christmas songs by all the bands I listen to. There's plenty of good songs, and Christmas only comes once a year, so I can't really enjoy them any other time.

mercury-hg 11-30-2003 05:53 PM

Harry Connick Jr. has 2 Christmas albums out that I really enjoy

God of Thunder 11-30-2003 06:07 PM

Just isn't Christmas until I've heard Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and the Old Lady" or Bob & Doug's "12 Days of Christmas".

Man, Santa Claus isn't a musician.
I'm hip man, that cat didn't know no tunes, man.

Jeff 11-30-2003 06:37 PM

I used to have this rad Muppets record. I wonder if it's still round.

Nefir 11-30-2003 08:33 PM

I'll be an ass and say Type O Negative - Red Water :D
Nothing adds to the holiday cheer like the most depressing Christmas song ever!

djtestudo 11-30-2003 08:35 PM

The greatest Christmas song ever written: "The Night Santa Went Crazy" by Weird Al Yankovic

otnorot 11-30-2003 09:54 PM

Well it took 7 replies to get a real Christmas song :)

Silent Night

Gortexfogg 12-01-2003 06:04 AM

I like to listen to old school Christmas songs like "O come O come emanuel" and "What child is this?" ect. Most Christmas songs are usually very awesome though.

sailor 12-01-2003 09:57 AM

I always like Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas. Good stuff.

jimk 12-01-2003 10:02 AM

i'm with the sailor...........charlie brown christmas rules at my house!

Conclamo Ludus 12-01-2003 10:41 AM

My favorite Christmas album is Lou Rawls: Christmas. Its the only christmas album that you could have sex to. Well maybe...

quadro2000 12-01-2003 12:19 PM

John Denver & The Muppets: A Christmas Together

The minute I put that on, it'll be Christmas for me. I'm just not letting it hit me...yet. :D

gnort 12-01-2003 12:25 PM

That Chipmunk Christmas song....such a classic

shred_head 12-01-2003 12:51 PM

No one has mentioned the Merry Axemas albums. Both volumes are extremely cool. For those unfamiliar with the records it's christmas music but with the melodies all played on the guitar (and in one case on bass). In most cases you could describe the songs as your traditional christmas tunes but supercharged through an overdriven amp. Many notable guitar players appear on each volume including Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Joe Perry, Zakk Wylde, Brian Setzer, Eric Johnson, Al Di Meola, Ted Nugent, and others. If you like guitar music than you'd probably like this. Its very cool.

JohnnyRock 12-01-2003 01:12 PM

I love them all from the goofy to the sentimental...it is my fave time of the year. I do, though, gravitate toward songs done by the crooners [Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Dean Martin, etc.] since that was what we had going at my house when I was growing up...

Yeah, that's the one I've got. The only XMas music I listen to. I love it.

archer2371 12-01-2003 05:18 PM

Trans-Siberian Orchestra man, just saw them at the Patriot Center last Saturday. They just rock, the really need to come out with a live album tho... I want that Guitar duel between Chris and whoever is the other guitarist and Daryl is singing the blues/jazz notes. The best part about this past live show, they played like thirty seconds of Kashmir and Daryl sang it almost perfectly. Great show, I just love these guys. Can't wait for their Beethoven's Last Night Tour in July of '05, might get some outdoor dates :D.

Begora21 12-01-2003 06:01 PM

I think "Phil Spector's Christmas Gift for You" is the best Christmas album out there ... even if he is a murderer

Tophat665 12-01-2003 06:41 PM

Now, I normally despise Christmas music. 4 seasons of retail Christmas will do that.

However, Trans Siberian Orchestra is excellent, Mannheim Steamroller can be excellent, and my dad always plays Handel and Bach all Christmas, so I get used to that.

Given my druthers, though, I'd continue to listen to the same things I listen to all year long. Maybe make sure I get Jethro Tull, "Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow" and "Ring Solstice Bells" on at least once each.

Soggybagel 12-01-2003 07:05 PM

Keep these songs a comin. I was actually trying to put together a music mix of christmas songs and need some more

danjo328 12-01-2003 09:19 PM

Manheim Steamroller (My present to my mom this year is tickets to seem them)

I'll probably go to hell for this one, but

Kenny G

I kinda like his christmas stuff

lordjeebus 12-02-2003 12:00 AM

James Brown's Funky Christmas!

Santa Claus go straight to the ghetto...

perripken 12-02-2003 06:04 AM

Oh holy night, by anyone!

platypus 12-02-2003 06:08 AM

I grew up listening to the Bing Crosby Christmas album.
For me, nothing represents the season like Bing singing "I'll Be Home for Christmas".

brandon11983 12-02-2003 09:15 AM

Andy Williams' Christmas CD. Starts off with "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year...." pop that in the CD player and I'm instantly in the Christmas spirit.

hawkeye 12-03-2003 05:13 PM

There are a few other songs I like
but my top three groups are
3) Mannheim Steamroller
2) Charlie Brown Christmas
1) TSO

(I gotta mention the Royal Guardsmen song Snoopy's Christmas. One of my fav Christmas songs)

SabrinaFair 12-03-2003 07:48 PM

My FAVOURITE Christmas song is "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan.

Certain versions of "Do You Hear What I Hear" make me cry..."Pray for peace, people everywhere" TEARS.

Oh, and I love O Holy Night. POWERFUL.

EleqTrizi'T 12-04-2003 04:21 PM

Has and always will be Perry Como and Burl Ives. It doesn't get more Christmas than that.

EleqTrizi'T 12-04-2003 04:27 PM

oh yeah Bing Crosby too.

phukraut 12-06-2003 01:11 PM

Tori Amos - Have a merry little christmas; she really knows how to do a depressing cover!

and also, i agree totally with Charlie Brown Christmas!

anti fishstick 12-06-2003 01:39 PM

i really like jewel's christmas album. it's kind of jazzy, especially rudolph the red nosed reindeer. cool version.

i also like the very special christmas volumes. proceeds go part to the special olympics. my favorite is volume 3, with the smashing pumpkins song "christmastime"

as far as traditional christmas music, my favorite is silent night and oh holy night.

ledhead 12-06-2003 09:57 PM

man, i hate christmas music. i never understood why one holiday should have all these songs about it. you dont hear easter songs, or thanksgiving songs, or even fourth of july songs. i just find christmas songs extremely annoying.

Speed_Gibson 12-07-2003 04:39 PM

have to go with almost nothing; would rather hear Puddle of Mudd "She Hates Me" than most christmas music. But the Southpark song "Merry Fucking Christmas" is always good.
edit: have to go with almost nothing......around november/december. There is a fair portion of holiday music (Crosby/Sinatra/swing versions/several others) I enjoy hearing in in the Spring or summer months, but I have a low tolerance for it this time of year.

I agree. I do enjoy the South Park Christmas Classics. The Most Offensive Song Ever is great. If you can, find the version with only Mr. Hankey singing. It's even more funny.

Jonsgirl 12-07-2003 07:48 PM

I like the classics...Burl Ives, Bing Crosbey and the like. My absolute favorite holiday sone is "(It's a) Marshmallow World" sung by Burl Ives. It's silly and happy and probably utterly annoying, but I can't help but love it

I'll second Bob and Doug, I always crack up when Bob says "This should just be the 2 days of Christmas, it's too hard for us!"

I also like Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight) by The Ramones. Retail work has soured me on all traditional christmas music.

monkeydriven 12-09-2003 08:00 PM

Alligator Blues Christmas album

doodah 12-09-2003 09:36 PM

grandma got runover by a reindeer or cheech and chongs telling the story abotu santa cleese

wilbjammin 12-09-2003 10:00 PM

When I was a little kid I really like "Pat-a-Pan" a lot. I guess I like Christmas songs in minor modes. "Silent Night" is always a good one. As much as I'm not into the religious aspect of Christmas, I'm haunted by it. Those songs still touch a part of me that goes back to childhood.
