music shopping online

do you ever buy cds online?
what are your favorite places to shop online?

i like to buy directly from the record label, if possible because they usually offer it for cheaper.

www.lookoutrecords.com
or www.killrockstars.com

i also like www.interpunk.com for any kind of punk/emo/hardcore.

i used to shop amazon a lot but i received a cracked cd and couldn't return it. so i'm not using that anymore :P maybe for books.. but not music.

of course, there are the usual cdnow.com

but one place i really enjoy is
www.cdbaby.com

they are based in portland and offer a wide range of genres from independent artists. you can search by category, the mood you're in, what artist they might sound like, etc. and there's always listening samples of the tracks. if anything, i can just get lost in it for hours listening and discovering new music. just like i can get lost for hours on amazon lists :D

sometimes, i just like going to amazon or cdbaby just to find new music. what are your favorite places to find music?

I like BOL.com. They also have alot of games wich i usually buy online.

Amazon.com -- Never really had a problem with them.

Nice to see that somone else shops at CDBaby.com. Another good thing about them is that they send a flat chunk of the money you send them for the CD directly to the artist. No middleman, no record label doling out miniscule percentage points.

When you buy from CDBaby you can be certain that you're supporting the artist.

The only site I've ever used is Interpunk, and it worked great for me. I've never looked at anything else, because I can find everything I need there.

Ditto on cdbaby.com. Ordered my third batch of CDs from them a couple days go. Should arrive tomorrow. I am quivering with anticipation :D

I don't even bother with the big labels anymore. There's just so much more out there, to broaden my musical horizons.

When I do shop online (I usually just get stuff from used music stores), I buy from deepdiscountcd.com they have good prices, and free shipping (a major selling point for me)

I but a lot from Amazon and Interpunk. I buy from the labels direct when a new CD is first released cuz they will usually give you all sorts of free shit for ordering.

oooh i ordered my first batch awhile ago and got it yesterday! the paper in the package said they would include a free cd in my next purchase. score! i love when recordlabels do this too.. as i've gotten a lot of free shit from killrockstars...

anyway, since you're on yr third batch, did they send you a free cd on a 2nd (and/or 3rd) order? what did you get? do you think they try to pick a free cd based on your cd purchases you've already made and try to match your tastes?

Nefir 12-04-2003 06:10 AM

Heh I think my brain needs defragmenting. I'm on my 4th batch, not the 3rd. They do not let you pick, and I have no clue how they come up with the choice, but I think its purely random. They send you one of their official CDBaby mix CDs every time - they have a pretty much infinite amount, since they can mix new ones every few weeks.

On the second batch they sent me their "Wake up UP UP!!!" CD. I don't much care for other peoples' choice of music for me (as I often listen to stuff thats too weird for others), but it was a nice gesture anyway :). I have yet to listen to it. The third time they actually neglected to pack the free CD in. It was on the invoice and everything, but not in the box. Wasn't really worth complaining about. The fourth batch had "Songs for the Lovelorn", which has also started its new job of official dust collector.

I generally buy from Amazon or deepdiscountcd.

anti fishstick 12-04-2003 12:19 PM

wow i'm really liking this deepdiscountcd. thanks for the link :D

as for cdbaby mixes, that sounds cool enough. i kind of like the excitement of a mystery cd then listening to it, at least once.
but yeah, i'll admit it'll probably collect dust before too long.

shalafi 12-04-2003 07:52 PM

ooohhh im gonna have to check some of these out if the damn bank ever gets me my new debit card (about 5 weeks now and counting). i usually just buy from the cheap section on half.com.

Evil Milkman 12-04-2003 08:19 PM

I hardly ever buy CDs online, but when I do, it's usually from the band's label if possible. That may not be the best way to do things, though, now that I think about it.

shalafi 12-09-2003 11:30 PM

Im liking this cdbaby browse by flavor thing. im buying all kinds of stuff ive never heard of before.

Halx 12-10-2003 01:59 AM

I like browsing industrial-music.com ... 'cause that's what I listen to!

obediah 01-09-2004 08:08 PM

For selection and price its:

alldirect.com

For hip-hop stuff that's hard to find

sandboxautomatic

notaneel 01-21-2004 01:41 PM

for independent bands, it is best to buy from the label...the cds will usually be cheaper than at the store

FoolThemAll 01-21-2004 03:39 PM

Amazon.com, from the used/new vendors.

Just a few days ago I got The Verve Pipe's self-titled brand new. The price, with shipping: $4.24.
