pink floyd - house of the rising sun (not sure who did the original but here is the web site anyway http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ho...the_Rising_Sun) i have also heard versions by the animals and bob dylan and they both kick ass aswell
House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folksong, that as far as I know dates too far back to know who wrote it. One of the earliest recordings I've found is by Ledbelly (avatar). The lyrics have changed a bit. My favorite is the Animals version, the organ is incredible.

Found a link apparently it may be as old as 17th century.

Seems like this one is dying out. New topic?

Top 5 Ballads

Let me define "ballad". I don't mean this in the contemporary pop music sense. I mean this in the traditional music sense. A Ballad (for the purposes of this thread) is a song that tells a story of a specific story or event. Ballads are very common in traditional Irish music as well as Country.

I'll wait to post mine, but if there is any confusion on this one, I'll jump right in.

Bob Biter has the closest idea to what I was talking about.

Here is mine:

- The Wind that Shakes the Barley (traditional, performed by Dead Can Dance)
- Whiskey in the Jar (traditional, peformed by Metallica/Thin Lizzy)
- Highway Patrolmen (by Bruce Springsteen, performed by Johnny Cash)
- Streets of Laredo (traditional, peformed by Johnny Cash)
- Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner (by Warren Zevon)

See, songs about a specific person and their story. Some of the songs you guys listed are more ballad in the sense that they are slower and more contemplative than that bands normal stuff.

Right, I don't doubt you. I'm didn't mean to imply that everyone else was wrong. Just pointed out that Bob was looking to the more traditional music that I was expecting to see.

Here are mine.

1. Love Bites - Def Leppard
2. More Than Words - Extreme
3. Is This Love - Whitesnake
4. Heaven - Warrant
5. Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison

Here are my top five ballads, and thanks Derwood for being so specific about the true definition of a ballad. This was a tough one. I went more with ones I knew off the top of my head as it was so hard to think of them.

1. Scenes From An Italian Restaurant - Billy Joel
2. Ticking - Elton John
3. Ballad In Plain D - Bob Dylan (but I prefer the version by Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls)
4. The Drinking Song - Moxy Fruvous
5. Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits (again, I prefer the IG version)

Nah, here's one:

Top 5 Songs with a color in the title

Now these have to be real colors. I don't want to see someone say "Lemon by U2" and try to argue that "lemon" is a color. I'm talking Crayola's basic 8, plus white, grey and black.
