depressed, need music

been going through a number of extended bursts of depression lately, and have come close to exhausting my supply of suitable music.

typically in this stage, i listen to things like taking back sunday, dashboard confessional, and dave matthews band. i'm looking for some suggestions really of some bands that are similar to these bands or their style of music that I can listen to. hell, i guess any suggestion would honestly be appreciated. songs that are soothing and mellow. good lyrics are a huge bonus.

what you folks got for me...

costello 10-25-2003 01:31 AM

just my two cents, good mellow music would include:

My Morning Jacket
Coheed and Cambria
Death Cab For Cutie
...And You Will Know Us By the Trail Of Dead
Beck (Sea Change mainly, very mellow acoustic music)
Dismemberment Plan
Modest Mouse
The Notwist
The Slackers

If you are looking to listen to more "emo" type music i would suggest:

Jets To Brazil
Pedro The Lion
Cap'n Jazz
Sunny Day Real Estate
Noise Ratchet
The Early November

if you like any of those pm me and ill send ya lots more bands if you'd like. cheer up my friend :)

mystmarimatt 10-25-2003 01:37 AM

dude. elliott smith. won't make you happy or cheer you up, it's just damn good misery music.

spived2 10-25-2003 02:56 AM

I like listening to Nickelback when I'm feeling down.

Bloodhound gang has a way of making me feel better as well.

Gortexfogg 10-25-2003 08:01 AM

Time Out of Mind - Bob Dylan

This is the perfect music for when you're in a horrible, low down mood.

But if you want to feel better, I suggest Shot of Love by Bob Dylan also.

devnull 10-25-2003 10:00 AM

alright, awesome. Thanks everyone. I'll start digging around to find some of these groups (majority I've never heard of). Hopefully all goes well

Mr.Deflok 10-25-2003 11:50 AM

Paranoid by TYPE O NEGATIVE and End of the Beginning by 30 SECONDS TO MARS, that chorus just makes you want to release all your angst, despair, pain and love... a suitable volitile mix.

Derwood 10-25-2003 01:21 PM

Ralph Covert's "Eat at Godot's" album.

There's so many more. I really love Counting Crows and just about all of their albums, Tori Amos, Elton John, Bjork, Train. I'll recomend some single songs too I guess

Travis - Luv
Blues Traveler - Look Around
Electric Light Orchestra - One Summer Dream
Kenna - Hell Bent
Evanescence - My Immortal/Hello
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm (of course)
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You
Train - Blind
Ben Kweller - Butterflys

Hmm I'll stop there and come back with more later.

Asta!!

You should check out Morphine. The singer plays 2-string fretless bass, with a drummer and a sax player. It is soothing, but not in a boring way. The lyrics are very good, the singer, the late Mark Sandman (his real name) said he was more inspired by works of literature than other bands. Each and every one of my friends who have heard Morphine is a fan of theirs. I decided to not write about anyone else, just to give my choice of this band more weight.

Albumwise, I think "Good" and "Cure For Pain" are the best to get intoduced to. For individual songs, try these:
The Other Side
Test Tube Baby/Shoot 'em Down
Thursday
Whisper
Hanging On A Curtain
I Had My Chance
You Speak My Language
A Good Woman Is Hard To Find
Rope On Fire

When I feel crappy, listening to this band makes me feel better.

Neon Ballroom is a great album. I recomend picking up the whole thing so I won't give any singles for it. (of course this doesn't mean the singles I do post are off of bad albums that aren't worth the purchase)

Rush - Tears (beautiful)
Pearl Jam - Black
The Cure - Burn, The Love Song, pretty much all their stuff
Josh Ritter - Kathleen (he's a really good singer songwriter)
Ben Lee - On & On

Gotta think a some more.....bbl

Asta!!

high_way 10-27-2003 06:19 AM

wholey shit, i just realised how many typos i had in the one sentence about silverchair....

phlox 10-27-2003 08:36 PM

'true love waits' is a good wallowing song.

halfshot182 10-27-2003 09:30 PM

perfect circle is the best when i am depressed. as is the song bittersweet symphony by the verve

fishin 10-28-2003 08:33 PM

id say sigur ros () but the lyrics are gibberish.

K-Wise 10-28-2003 08:40 PM

^ Any clue what language they're speaking? They're swedes right?

Asta!!

fishin 10-29-2003 05:27 AM

It literally is gibberish. It's no language. Jonsi calls it "Hopelandish." They're from Iceland actually.

burntmonkey 10-29-2003 05:57 PM

Stay away from Norah Jones or Enya. They might lead you to greater depths of depression.

bennyb 10-29-2003 07:19 PM

I find that if you've ever listened to music while doing something enjoyable (not wackin off) if you listen to it again, you will be put in a similar state of mind.

IE: I listened to the matrix soundtrack while reading every terry brooks book, now whenever i listen to any song from it, i am brought back to that world.

h2ogo69 10-29-2003 07:41 PM

the postal service

agreed. no way you can be sad when you listen to them :). if you like them devnull try death cab for cutie. the singer for the postal service is also the lead singer for death cab.

eple 10-30-2003 04:19 AM

The Eels, Counting Crows, Jeff Bucley, Beck, RATM (get angry instead of depessed) etc.

iandj777 10-31-2003 11:58 AM

Looking at what you already listen to I would suggest a few:

Slow Reader (this one can be hard to find but it's an absolutely incredible album. A must for any emo-indie fan)
The Promise Ring-Woodwater (I love listening to this in the fall)

Also check out Portishead:Dummy and Morcheeba:Who can you trust? It's a different type of music (trip-hop) than what you mentioned but can be very enjoyable for what you are dealing with.

Me personally, I always retreat to Nine Inch Nails. But I'm a sadistic fuck and I like to exhaust my depression rather than ease out of it. Not that I disagree with your method, just explaining my own.

burntmonkey 11-03-2003 07:32 PM

Try listening to REM and figuring out what the heck Michael Stipe's talking about.

It'll distract you from your depression.

high_way 11-03-2003 09:13 PM

i would have to say staind aswell

listened to them last night when i was in a down mood

good stuff

devnull 11-04-2003 07:22 AM

Wow, you all have had a lot of good suggestions. I refuse to use KaZaA or any of those services (not because I refuse to steal, but because I hate those services), so collecting this music has been a bit slow. The ones I have got I've liked a lot. Thanks for all the suggestions though, and keep em coming. This could probably prove useful to other people too, who knows.

a_divine_martyr 11-04-2003 09:31 AM

Tool - Pushit
Tool - The Patient
Tool - Disposition/Reflection/Triad (listen to them in a row as a trio, it's just amazing).

drown_with_me 11-04-2003 09:35 AM

Run out right now and purchase the following:

The Black Heart Procession "1"
The Black Heart Procession "2"
The Black Heart Procession "3"

Do it.

drawerfixer 11-04-2003 09:46 AM

Anything from Tom Petty.

Stare At The Sun 11-04-2003 12:55 PM

Andrew WK - She is beautiful

That song never fails to put a smile on my face, and make me happier, granted, i have some good memories that go with it, but that song is just so full of energy and make me happy. :)

scansinboy 11-05-2003 11:04 AM

So you're having bouts of depression... Why do you want to listen to mellow music?

This isn't really an album reccomendation, but rather a band.

I see you're in St Louis, Devnul. If only I had found this thread a few days earlier, I would have reccomended that you go and see Cowboy Mouth in concert, they were there just a few days ago, on the 30th of October, in Colombia I think it was... (is that close?)
Anyway, No matter how shitty I am feeling or tired or whatever, I always end up with an increased energy level of about 50x from before the show started. They put out so much energy during their live shows that you can't help but feeling great after you leave. It's an amazing natural high you get and any explination really doesn't do them justice if you haven't seen them in person. You just have to go and trust me on this.

Short of seeing them in person, I would reccomend their album "All You Need Is Live".
http://www.store.netresultdesigns.co...ynil.large.jpg
If you can't see them in person, then this album comes the closest to delivering that amazing energy and uplifiting feeling that you would otherwise get.

Off that album, or more specifically, listen to the song "Jenny Says" and if you're on Kazaa look for the "Live from the X-Lounge" version. It does wonders for your mood.

As Fred says, "I don't care What's bugging ya, I don't care what's bringing you down, whether it's your job, your boss, your school, your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your landlord... I don't care what it is, I want you to take all that frustration, all that anger, all that negativity, roll it into a tiny little ball, throw it in the air and just LET IT GO, LET IT GO, LET IT GO!"

Bruisedskin 10-27-2004 05:40 AM

scansinboy.... yea gotta agree with the cowboy mouth, their shows are amazing, i've seen them in florida god knows how many times, they're definately ableto make your day better.
