Cafe del Mar

For the longest time this label has eluded me. It all started not long after the Talented Mr. Ripley came out and I went on Kazaa to download the soundtrack. There was a mislabeled song that I downloaded that was a techno remix of a song from the opera Dido & Aeneas. It blew me away and was, to me, the perfect infusion of electronic and classical music. I saved the song for the longest time but despite my efforts to find more of the same type of thing, I never could. Then, just recently, for whatever reason, I looked in the details of the file and noticed something about a "cafe del mar" in the ID tag. I thought of looking on www.musicdonkey.net for this band (so I thought) cafe del mar to see if maybe it could help me in my search. Sure enough, it did. I found a 20 album discography of this Cafe del Mar and downloaded it. In it were 2 albums entitled Aria and Aria II - one of which contained the Dido & Aeneas song - that had much more music of a similar style. Earlier today I went on the net and found Cafe del Mar's website, only to discover that it's a LABEL, not a band, and that it is also a cafe in Ibiza. (The original file I found said "Ibiza" in the file name - but I related it to the popular techno albums that come out of Ibiza ) It turns out that the song I had found on accident is actually from a guy named Paul Schwartz (whose name I recognize for some reason although I don't know why).

Have you heard or heard of Cafe del Mar? Do you like the music they put out? If you haven't heard it, I recommend you check it out. Also, if you have, what are some other suggestions you can make as to where I can find similar style music. I especially like this Paul Schwartz guy - some really interesting stuff. In fact, anyone have any idea where or why I may have heard of Paul Schwartz? Is my mind just playing tricks on me, or have other people heard of him as well?

Allmusic.com says:

Paul Schwartz, a son of the songwriter Arthur Schwartz, began his career in classical music, becoming assistant conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. While continuing to work in the classical world, he also crossed over to the musical theater, working as musical director for such shows as Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song & Dance and The Phantom of the Opera. In the 1990s, he was signed as a recording artist to Astor Place Records and in 1997 released Aria, which became a considerable success in the field of classical crossover. Revolution (1998) contained Schwartz's arrangements of Beatles songs, and Aria 2: New Horizon (2000) was another hit on the classical crossover charts. The religiously oriented State of Grace (2000), released on Windham Hill Records, scored on the new age charts. In May 2002, under the name the Paul Schwartz Project, the composer/conductor released Earthbound, his first album to consist entirely of his own compositions. Meanwhile, he continued to conduct and score occasional independent films.
Looking at what you wrote, and what AMG says, you are fan of New Age!! Extensions of which include Yanni, Enigma, Deep Forest and others. Its a broad term.

Ibiza, as you know likes its dance music.

thats all I could find (in 5 minutes)

And I haven't heard about Cafe Del Mar before. But I do know that the italian and greek bistros clubs enjoy releasing their own compilations. Its like taking the club home with you.

I have been listening to Cafe Del Mar albums for years. I stumbled upon the albums when I was in London, and have been fascinated ever since. Now, many of the tracks that I spin with come from Cafe Del Mar albums. They offer everything from deep trance to downtempo, and never fail to get people moving.

Heh, yeah, as far as genres I like, that's pretty much anything - but I do like some new age. Yanni not so much, but I've loved Enigma ever since their first album came out in the states and my parents got it. Great stuff Thanks for the info!
