80's Child who thinks new music sucks arse..

I am 30, a child of the 80's, and a nightclub DJ and was just wondering if I was the only one who thinks the music of 2003 sucks major arse.

I am a total New Wave junky today (something I couldn't stomach back then) - Talk Talk, Echo and the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, New Order, Morissey, Depeche Mode, etc.

When I play songs like "In Da Club" or "Magic Stick" or "Shake Ya Tailfeather" or "Get Low" I honestly want to be sick. I don't get how that has become the music of choice for today.

I look at songs like "Come on Eileen" and "Our House" and "Blister in the Sun" and "99 Luft Baloons" and think to myself, there is NO way people are going to listen to "In Da Club" in 20 years and relish on how great that song was.

The music you have named, does suck, thats all there is too it. The thing is there is tons of good music out there, just because its not on the radio, doesnt mean it doesnt exisit.

The thing is, do you think you are going to get a 22 year old drunk girl to dance to "Coldplay" or "Radiohead", there is a ton of good music out there, but for the most part, Rap/Booty/HipHop has taken over the dance charts.

Yeah you're right, it mostly does suck arse. Not all of it, but more than 90%

Feel my pain, I was raised on 60's music when bands were bands. A lot of those Big Names had majors in classical btw. Ironicly enough Jagger is a LSE grad. Whatever, it proved they could at least spell their own names.

yeah yeah

I always argue with people that 50 Cent should be plural. If he wants to be called "Cent" he should be 1 Cent or 50 Cents.

And I can't STAND having suburban white kids come up to me requesting "Fitty Cent"...drives me crazy.

No, the original title should have read "80's Child who knows new music sucks arse.."

On the other hand, I've heard that the best DJs are the ones who dislike the music they play. That way, you are honestly gauging the reactions of the crowd rather than playing the songs you want to hear.

I couldn't disagree more! There is a lot of new good music out there. Where I do agree, though, is that Pop Music today sucks. I also agree that what is popular today will not stand the test of times like the songs you named. I just turned 30 also, and am a former DJ. I admit I wasn't very good because I did not like alot of the Pop music, but rather went for what I considered was far superior, but less popular bands. That is how I got into dance/techno/house/trance/drum'nbass, etc.

Sometimes it's hard to believe that with all of the music that has already been created that there is anyone out there that still can have any originality, but there is!

yup. hate any new pop. it's awful. sometimes i wonder if black pop culture is playing all of us white folks for fools. i mean, they invented ragtime, which evolved into jazz, and we stole it. so they started messing around with rock. and we stole it. so maybe they got together and said "hey, lets make some really shitty music just to see if they'll follow us again, and we can laugh at them if they do"

I think things started to go downhill in the 90's, and music has now reached an all time low. Mozart, Schoenberg and Cage are all turning in their graves. Never before has (mainstream) music been such a cultreless, talentless empty product as it is now.

I'm approaching 30 myself and stopped listening to the radio regularily probably about four years ago.

Best decision ever.

Enabled me to start working backwards and get introduced to artists like Dylan, Drake, VU, Joy Division, MBV....

Pop music alway sucks until it stands the test of time, even if its only a couple of years. I'm 25 and I think I'm pretty well immersed into almost every type of music, Jazz, Blues, Classical, Techno, Rock, R & B, I love it all. There is such thing as great pop-rap but you have to give it a few years and then go back to it. I've tried this approach and found some rap from just a couple of years ago that I couldn't stand when it was bumping out of everyones car windows, and now I've found something in it I can appreciate. I generally don't latch onto anything unless they're tried and true with previous albums that I enjoy, or if they've brought something original to the picture.

Pop music generally sucks. It is usually comprised of throw-away tunes and trendy lyrics. It is interesting that the bands listed, Talk Talk, Echo, The Furs, New Order, Depeche Mode, etc...were not mainstream music when they came out. In the 80's in Phoenix, the only place you could find those bands on the radio was this lame AM station. Today you can hear all of those bands on several different FM stations and you rarely hear what was "popular" in the 80's. I know that there is good music out there, it is just often very hard to find it.

Theres a difference between "new music" & "popular new music". As said by others pop sucks ass, Its disposable musack (the emphasis is on "ack") Its made to be simplistic & easily accessable so as to get the highest fanbase. I am convinced that from now on you will not hear new music of any substance (with the exception of a few) on Radio, Tv or in a nightclubs.

I'm torn, I love the music in the 80s, hell there are some bands I couldn't stand back there that I like now, yet there are some music today that I like as well. But if push comes to shove and I have to pick it would be 80s, I mean who doesn't love Safety Dance?

heheheh... each new generation has trouble digesting the current music of the day.. it is as old as music itself i would guess.. but i would have to agree. I gravitate towards the 80's stuff as well for 'pop'.. but I mostly listen to metal anyhow.. but.. I love .. the cure, the smiths, joy division, new order.. depeche.. .. etc.. from the 80's for what it was.. but.. there were also some god awfull songs that came out of that era as well.. heh.

I think it is the tendency of every generation to idolize the music of their childhood and adolescence. To me, the 80s rocked, but a lot of cool things were happening in my life then, too.

You know how when you listen to old music and it brings back good memories? Well, that's sort of what I'm talking about, I guess.

True, but I really didn't listen to New Wave that much in High School, I was more a Van Halen / Run DMC guy.

I think the next big niche is taking really bad rap songs (i.e. Hot In Herre, Magic Stick), and singing them 50's Lounge style:

"It's getting hot in herre, so take off all your clothes!"
"Iiiii've got the Maaaagic Stiiiick, I'll hit you once, I'll hit you twice with my Maaaagic Stiiick"

Have you listened to Richard Cheese? More on the hard rock side, but great lounge music!

The "Pop" music of the 80s and 90s was attrocious... yet, at the same time the underground and independent music scene was blossoming. The same is occuring now. The "worst of times" in the mainstream often mean a boom in really really good below-the-radar music and scenes.
